INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Last few weeks have been HARD. So many phone calls, arrangements. Missing my Mom a lot, watching Dads grief and his health.. Dad and I are the same; find joy in our faith and our animals. I won't be hatching this year of course. What little hatching I did gave my Mom joy holding the babies. Want to say a big WELCOME if I missed you! About our thread... I don't care where you live, you're welcome here! Its not just about chickens either. I have kept just about everything from mice to cows. This is an open discussion I just ask.. keep it "kid clean" we have children on our thread. Lets try to leave politics and religion out.

I checked out the Indiana member's page and seen I wasn't listed on it. How to I get added?

Also do you have any Lavender Muscovy's?

@Nyla Do you remember the channel name? I would be interested to see it. Technically the town ordinance prohibits poultry of any kind in town, but it outlines a process of applying for an exception.
I would try calling Agrarian in Broad Ripple. I know Andrew, one of the owners, does a lot with fighting for people's rights to have backyard chickens. He might be able to give you the information you need!!

What little fighting there was between the boys was apparently over in the first few seconds of introduction between the new silkie (Lionel I think is the spelling for the name the owner gave me when I picked him up, but he's named after Lion-O from Thundercats) and David Bowie. Was a most hilarious fight. They'd puff up Lionel would go low, Bowie would go high, then they'd trade spots as Lionel ran under Bowie, who'd do a crazy kung-fu jump kick over Lionel. Bowie didn't even touch him, just flew around, puffing up and jumping delicately over him.

The broody OE is another story. She tears into everyone.

Did notice Lionel had some trouble breathing and have been working to pick his nose for him. He's getting better.

Fixed up the old pheasant run, so he's vacationing from everyone else in quarantine there. Seems to enjoy the solitude and us a lap bird once I catch him. Going to have to get a good picture if him. I think he's adorable.

1st day of school!

Decided to have one last summer outing yesterday & drove up to 6 Flags. Great day! The sights of children in strollers, the heat of the sunshine, the smell of funnel cakes & sun block, and the sounds of music, carnival rides, and laughter made it feel like a day in mid July. My little DS grew up a lot over the summer. No more kiddie rides for him, and he's going into 2nd grade! Although everyone's excited to get back into the school routine, I will miss my kids.

This morning took everyone by surprise. The dogs looked at us strangely as we tried to let them out 90 min sooner than normal. The kids were groggy & bumping into walls. The chickens were delayed due to the need to drop the kids off. Personally, I thought I was doing OK. I had showered, packed lunches, & even checked the backpacks before leaving the house. After getting back home, doing the chicken chores, and spending a few min in the garden, I tried to slip a few pea pods in my pocket. Oopps! I had put on my pants backwards. I wish I had noticed that BEFORE meeting the other moms & new teacher!
 :lau
Tee hee!

Fox question:
Yesterday morning I found a nice big hole next to the chicken run.
Today I walked out & surprised a red fox while he/she was trying to get into the coop. It had pulled off some wood trim around the door, but nothing functional. Because I surprised it, the fox ran further back and proceeded to try to get to my 9wk old chicks in the chicken tractor - who were safely in their sleeping box. It was standing on the tractor's roof & scratching at the sleeping box. I sent my dog out & he gave it a good scare. The dog is still out there now, as well as the roosters, while the hens free range inside our fenced yard.

My question is what to expect next? Also, is there more I can do?
(This is a neighborhood, so hunting is not an option.)

Hunting might not be, but trapping is. Expect it to keep coming back and to wipe your poultry off the map first chance it gets. Leave the dog out a fox can't get through hardware cloth, but it will pull off wood of all sorts.

Trapping a fox is extremely difficult. The things I know that deter a fox are: an electric fence, a dog, a llama, a donkey, and leaving a radio on outside.

Since you're in a neighborhood probably leaving the dog out, or radio on would be the best options.

I love the wewees too. Lucy has been honking softer. We talk soft to her then she does too. She is talking to Wilbur softer also, but when she wants something she honks louder.

Wilbur decided that Lucy is okay to hang out with.

How are Anna and Elsa doing? Have they started laying yet? I've got a new layer Sunday that was in their brood!

How are classes going? They started this week? Or still coming up?

Fun free stuff - I work for a plastic manufacturing company and they gave us some returns today! I managed to snag a small shed that I can convert into a coop. My level of excitement is through the roof. I've been joking that I was going to petition the CEO to give me an 8x12 for science. We recently have been getting inquiries as to whether or not our sheds would work as a coop, so you know, of course I would be willing to test this. For the greater good. But alas, I'm shy. This is 4x6, so its still smaller than where I want to be, BUT significantly larger than what they're currently dealing with.
