INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Just fired up a sportsman...My Ameruacana (sp?) rooster went missing Friday night. I thin out roosters for winter, and am now needing his replacement ASAP! He sired my EE/OE flock. My Dark Cornish roo is stepping in to take his place until one is mature.

I have a handsome EE Rooster, his sister's lay blue and he hatched from blue. Year old last month. I could loan him to you or trade for a laying hen of some sort if you want to PM me.

Unless you're trying to fill out their chests at the expense of their egg laying capacity, I'd stick your Leghorn rooster over them. White is recessive to other egg colors, he's an excellent rooster in every way (except his ear splitting crow), and he comes by bigger, better, more prolific egg genes. He's a wily guy who's got seniority in an area full of predators--despite being bright white and shiny. Absolutely your best bet unless you're looking to dual purpose your EE.
I want to add bulk so Beefy the DC is my guy for now. I may integrate the leghorns in there tho, its not a bad idea for winter.
As it turned out, both if Kate's (the OEG hen) flockmates were killed by hawks, so the poor girl is the only chicken here. The turkeys have all settled in marvelously, and the girls have been dustbathing with great gusto in every earthy depression and heap of DE and PDZ they could find since they arrived. Jake Jake has been a happy, strutting boy, too! He's still got to figure out how to mate right, but he'll figure it out soon with all these ladies to practice on!

Tried to get some pictures, but they've turned out awful. Will have to try with a better camera. Couldn't get any of Kate. She's way too traumatized to sit still. Pancake is the bronze hen, Sweetie is the obe-eyed White Holland, I'm not sure if the Chocolate Bourbon looking girl has a name yet (but she'll get one quick if she doesn't!)

Name away! I never named her. I'm very happy for the girls!

I will pm you!

I read that as trees leaving. Like getting up and leaving the property. I had to take a second look!

So sorry about your losses! I hope all gets better!:hugs
Until the trees leave out, I won't be free ranging anymore. Over the last 2 weeks I have lost 3 precious flock members. All I will keep going forward is my leghorns, and EE/OE chicken flocks.

So these past few days I've been dealing with a Raccoon trying to get into one of my breeding aviaries. I finally decided I had enough. I went to Menards and bought a live trap. 2 days set with tuna I finally caught the culprit!
Here is the cute little culprit!
Hasn't growled at me, hasn't tried to attack me. Seems tamed. It's has reddish fur instead of our normal black and grey raccoons. Very different then our normal ones.

I guess it's going around.
Yesterday we lost 1/2 our quail to this visitor:

BTW- Does anyone know what kind this is. I've always been calling them Coopers hawks because they're not as big as the red-taileds.

Had a rough day trying to deal with plumbing and a water bill that was 4 times greater than it should be. We can't afford the huge water bill, so there's certainly no money for a plumber!) After trouble-shooting I discovered problems with both of our toilets, researched how to repair, got the parts (& my dad for help), and finally fixed the toilets....... and then had to replace a shut off valve that broke after the repair. I walked into the house from the 2nd trip to the hardware store, the kids came home, one was crying, the other was stressed, and our elderly dog pooped on the floor. As I carried the mess outside to the trash, a hawk came flying at me from deep inside the garage. The garage door was open and the hawk was helping itself to our quail. A total of 5 quail were brutally killed and another 4 were too injured to save. The hawk grabbed what it could & pulled the pieces through the bars. (Thankfully DD’s silkie & the chicks were safe – also caged in the garage only 24" away.) The poor poultry survivors were all in shock as they witnessed the carnage.

I ended up putting the surviving quail into their big summer cage condo. (Mostly because the garage cages were bloody.) The hawk continued to attack them until I put a tarp over the whole cage. Then the hawk kept walking around the perimeter of the chicken run searching for an entry point. It also sat on the window flower box & staring at the chickens inside the coop. Every time we opened the garage, the hawk flew back inside looking for dessert. What was even more scary was how close the kids could get to the wild bird.

The flock was locked up all day and the quail must be covered or they will not come out of their hiding hutch.

How did you know there was a racoon trying to get in? Glad you got him, now what are you going to do with it?
