INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

jchny & mememe~ I'm going to have to open a Home for Wayward Chickens to save them from stock pots! At least animal lover isn't going to cook her mean chicken. : - ) I used positive reward training for my RIR when she was a "teenager" last summer. When I'd be sitting on a porch step outside and I'd pick her up to pet her, and put her down, she would ruffle her feathers and walk around behind me a give me a big peck on my back! She would do that every time! It was hilarious, but of course I had to stop that behavior. Her favorite things in the whole world are blueberries, so I would pick her up, put her down and immediately give her one blueberry before she had a chance to even start to ruffle her feathers. I repeated that several times a day for several days and she never pecked me again. She prefers organic blueberries from Fresh Market. haha, not really, but she does NOT like frozen blueberries.

strssed mom~ I know how you feel when you can't get out and play with your chickens! I took them out for their usual field trip today and it sprinkled twice, but I could tell that the rain was just passing through so we stayed outside. I'm sure my neighbors think I am the weirdest!

jchny~ Poor baby goat Bo! He has had a lot of new experiences to deal with. I bet he's sleeping at the foot of your bed right now!
Do you follow the same process for cat food? A few years ago, we adopted a stray cat, approx. 6 mos. old at the time, who we found hanging out with our other cats on the back deck. We gave him the unimaginative name Tiger. He's a great cat, but has always been small. We've had him neutered and he's been well taken care of, but he has always had a tendency to throw up food (dry food) a few times a month. I've tried different food, but it sounds like fermented food would help him if he would eat it. I assume I could cut your recipe into a fourth of the size to ferment smaller quantities of food. We have three cats, but you are used to fermenting massive amounts!

You had me at Tiger

We fortunately have not had any mean chickens at this point, However the Tom turkey is defiantly pushing my patience. I have to feed and water them from the outside as he has a thing about me which means I can not go into the coop. Dh can go in, he puffs up at him but doesn't rush him. I only have to go the the fence of the pen and Tom is bumping the fence to try and eat me.
If it wasn't for the fertilization factor on the Hens eggs I would be letting him know he was going to be my first cleaned bird.
Hoping to have the Hen sit on some eggs later in the season to hatch some poults out. If she is successful, he is outta here. As bad as it sounds, I will not cry when he goes.

I'm late on the fermented feed question!

Here are some articles that may be helpful on understanding the process and the difference between fermenting for alcohol and lacto-fermenting.

The research that was done on fermenting feed for chickens was using lacto-fermentation and that is the type of ff I do.

These 2 parts are the "why" and "which one"

Be sure to read through all the comments at the end of these. I think it will answer a lot of questions!

You can pm me too, if you have more questions...I'd be glad to help! :D

Okay, these are the ones you have posted before. One of my biggest issues was not knowing exactly what 'dry feed' they were using. I like to think I am smart-ish on given days, but I figured it was grain and corn, not pellets. So I figured it would not work for me as thats what I use. However as Jchny explained, you can use the pellets and go ahead and throw in corn and scratch too. Which cleared up my confusion.

No that is not my lake I wish, my dog would have alot of fun lol and I would never kill any of my chickens ....but my dad did kill my first chicken poor Peep ....out of the duck pics can anyone tell what breed they are?? And my mean chickens name is Dominique but she's a barred rock lol she's the chicken my dad picked cuz she came right up to him....how can you tell if an egg is fertile and Ms May doesn't have any feathers around her crop is this good or bad???????

I'll send you a pm!

Thats ok too! I just like adding the grain in, gives them a little variety

OH and forgot to mention, dont use metal, it will leach into the ferment.
I have questions too, lol.

Ok, I went out and bought this: http://www.wheatmontana.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=169

Is this ok to use for FF?

So if I understand this, I should have a couple of buckets going at all times started at different days or just one that I keep adding to?

I only have 15 - 3 month old pullets. They are not outside yet. Coop and run are not done. Hopefully soon (this week if rain stays away). They are in the garage in a huge 8 x 3 brooder (9) and a great dane kennel (6) They have a 7lb feeder. How do I determine how much I make?

Sorry for all the question, I have been very interested in starting FF, but...so confusing on the main FF page.

Thanks for taking the time to answer yet more questions on FF.

Best way to tell if an egg is fertile is breaking a few open and looking for the 'bullseye' on it. Here is a recent posting on it.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/759466/is-this-egg-infertile-or-fertile.. Scroll down to the third posting and it shows good pictures of what the bullseye looks like.

So I just went out to do my chicken rounds and noticed a few of my girls are looking a bit scraggly. Three of the girls are missing feathers on their back just above their tails. Do I assume they are becoming the favourite choice for the Rooster?
I had a quick look and I don't see anything raw, just missing feathers.
I know my Rooster is starting to grow his spurs, they have gone from little nubs to half inch long.
I hope he does not start tearing my girls up.
