INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hello all I'm from SW Indiana and was looking for a good dealer in chicks. Anyone know or should I just do mypetchicken.com or TSC?
also ask at TSC or any feed store or big box farm supply store where they get their chicks from, it might vary within the year (not usually but I saw thread here that indicate some big box have at least before switched during the year) and they may switch year to year. Most use a big hatcheries. A local feed store may use a local hatchery(ies) but that would be an occasional exception not the rule.

I was able to special order chicks from Farm and Fleet (from Cackle). Since they order in bulk, the prices were good. It saved me a lot of money vs ordering directly and paying for shipping, plus the small order fee.

In my area I was told if you watch the rural king bins and either 1) you can get larger chicks for a cheaper amount (1 to 2 dollars a head) 2) regular baby chicks for the same amount later in n the season the afternoon before the next shipment when they slow down to 1 shipment a week. If you are not picky on breeds or can wait a long while for the breed(s) you want.

This morning at 5 am I went to the post office and picked up my Pair of Mandarins from Mallard Lane Farms! Lady at the Post yelled at me about the box having the post office's address. The tracking information when looked up on their computers shows My address on record but hold for pick up at their Post Location. She said she was sorry but with a tone. She stood over my shoulder as I opened the box to check if they were okay. She said she had always wanted Mandarins just never knew where to get them! She said she would talk more with me during the summer when I start shipping eggs again :lau

Once all Aviary's are complete, I plan to get six chicken hens two per Aviary to see if they will go broody and hatch some Mandarin eggs for me.

I have two extra Females that are White with no males for. I want to sell them if I can't find Males to go with them.

Cochin are a very broody bird. Silkies can be, but can't keep many eggs under them. Might be a better choice tho since the duck breed is smaller. A good broody duck is a Khaki Campbell also. Mine is a broody machine! If she finds a pile of eggs, its like flipping a switch. She is never off the nest long enough to get bred so her eggs are usually infertile.

1 egg today. I think the chickens didn't appreciate the snow! It was mostly a few flurries, no one wanted to come out of the coops. I think the wind had them unhappy too.

Well, I planted everything in the garage on the 4th.. and all but the peppers and snap peas have already germinated! I've got 1 more grow light so I'm going to try some carrot, purple bok choy and some Arugula. I found the variety of seeds I wanted from Baker Creek. I plan to start the summer garden in about a month. We got a late start last summer, not doing that again. Lost most of my winter squash to frost before it was mature, ugh.

I think I may go with Bantam breeds, I can't go with standard ducks. They are too big and I'm worried of the ducks drowning my Mandarins in the ponds. Each Aviary will only have 1 male and 1 female Mandarin so 2 Cochin's would be perfect per Aviary. Mandarins only lay 1-2 clutches each year of 9-12 eggs in a clutch. And their eggs are about the same size as bantam chicken eggs. Hopefully if I collect the eggs the females will continue to lay. I plan to put fake ceramic eggs in nesting boxes for the chicken so they will go broody hopefully. I haven't got the chickens yet but probably will in the next month or so. The Mandarins should start to lay in Late March early April. I found a lady only 30 minutes away from me selling female chickens for $12 each and they are around 2-3 years old and some are known broody's. It's okay if the hens don't lay lots of eggs. As long as they go broody for me once or twice a year.. lol

has anyone heard of the Ruth Stout method of gardening? For some reason I have had 4 to 6 videos pop up as suggestions to watch I watched a couple it seams that the idea is not to till your soil in any form you simply put out rotten straw or hay (you may use fresh)using that as both growing material/mulch.

@oldrooster
Yes! I have one of her books and it is really fun to read - she has an interesting humor.

The book I have is:
