INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Good morning all. My name is Rosie and I’m in Lapel. I’m a Brit that married a Pendleton guy in January last year so live here now. Always wanted chickens but never really had space. Now have 29 including a duck and a turkey (both need girlfriends). Got an incubator for Christmas and hatched my first 3 babies yesterday. Hope I don’t drive you all nuts with my questions.

Welcome to the group Rosie. No such thing as too many questions. We're always happy to help.

One suggestion- although this sub-forum generally only has Hoosiers in it, questions in BYC in general often benefit from knowing roughly where you are as climate is often a factor. I recommend you go to your Account page and updating your Location field with your general location.

A big thanks to Rosie for meeting me and giving me some fertilized eggs so that my broody hen and my children could experience hatching eggs!

Picture attached as well as a video of her sitting in them the first time.
I think I may need to remove a couple, she’s not quite big enough to cover them, but I’m waiting to see if she scoots them back under.

Hello,
I just had one of my 3 months old pullet killed a couple days ago 😭. The head was apart from the body by a few feet. I suspect it was killed or by a crow or a hawk The incident happened during the day and I have seen some hawks and crows in the area. The whole thing was left on the property, I think it got spoke by my dogs and got scared. I would like to get me a goose to protect my flock. I rather buy locally than mail order. Does anyone knows who sells goslings in Indiana? I live in Indianapolis but I don't mind to drive a little further.

Thanks

OMG she is so cute.

Our pullet from 2019 has finally started to lay! HOORAY!!

Her dad is Aracauna (tailless, tufted, blue egg gene) and her mom is a naked neck (featherless is some areas, terra cotta colored egg).

The bird herself is cute as can be, and except for the tufts, I think she's gotten the best of the genes from both parents.

Here's her as a chick:

I would still like to get a young blue egg layer. Our current blue egg layer will be 7 this year. I was hoping we could hatch some of our Aracauna roo over our cream legbar hen's eggs, but so far, no joy. We'll probably try again in the spring.

I'm in Pendleton. I keep Chinese Geese and have had several years now. My flock is old so I've ordered a new flock this spring. I'm in Pendleton they wont ship here until April. I will have extra I ordered 10 Goslings. Geese will certainly manage areal predators.

Eggs all frozen this morning and cracked ugh. So they get tossed. My single goose hen is laying and a few Muscovy. I need to add a couple piglets for food waste. There is 7 adults here right now but we still seem to have a lot of food waste. No one eats leftovers, just wasteful. I've begun freezing portions so someone will (me).
I've looked for piglets a couple months now. Closest is about 1.5 hours away.
