INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ah, yes, Meyer is usually my go-to if I need chicks quick! ("Need" :gig ) Glad it went well for you. Having chicks shipped is really stressful, on us and on the poor babies! Too bad there isn't a better way to get them sometimes.

So, Meyer's rare breed assortment can include any of the following:

Based on that...

1 and 6 both appear to have single combs, so I'd say they're both 'Heritage Barred Plymouth Rocks', but they could also be Dominiques if they have rose combs, as you and @Faraday40 both pointed out. :)

2 is either an Easter-egger, Lakeshore Egger, or Green Queen. I don't see any feathering on the legs (Green Queens are Faverolles mixes so it's likely there would be some sparse leg feathering), and I think the Lakeshores are Legbar mixes and don't have fluffy cheeks, so I think she's an Easter-egger.

3 could be a blue Andalusian, Cochin, Polish, Marans, Ameraucana, or Orpington from that list. I see no crest, fluffy cheeks, or feathering on the legs, so she's likely either an Andalusian or an Orp. It should be easy to tell once she's older; skinny hen with a large comb that lays white eggs is an Andalusian, while fluffy hen with small comb that lays brown eggs is an Orp.

4 is a tough one. Does she have feathering on her feet? It almost looks like she has fluffy cheeks on her, so I'm wondering if she's maybe a Green Queen or an Easter-egger. If she doesn't have fluffy cheeks, she could also be a White Cochin if her feet are fuzzy, or a Delaware if not. Editing to add, I forgot about their White Marans, which may or may not be feather-footed, but she could be one of those, too. Marans would have pinkish or white feet when older, while Cochins and Delawares would have yellow feet.

5 also looks like she has fluffy cheeks to me, so I'd say an Easter-egger or Green Queen there, too. If she doesn't have fluffy cheeks, then she's probably a Partridge Rock or Cochin, depending on if her feet are feathered or not.

Number 5 looks a lot like an Easter-egger I got from Meyer last year, my girl Mona. This is her now. :love When she was a baby, I called her Brownie or Brownie-Bite because she was so chocolatey-looking. :p She lays a super pretty green egg. 💚

Mona is beautiful...
None of my baby chicks have feathered feet. Thanks for your opinion regarding my baby chicks. Can't wait for them to be a little bigger to see what they are. :)

Ok I need to vent... why some people are so inconsiderate to others?? Where we live we are only five neighbors in a dead end street. we have some fence in the side of the properties to divide the properties but not a gated driveway. My new neighbor has two dogs, they are sweet as can be. However, one of his dog is a pretty large lab. This lab get loose very often and run all over the neighbors property. I have found this lab running by my chicken run and all over my property very often. I have talked to the neighbor several time, and he only apologize and says he tries to keep his dogs in his property.
Try???:mad: what about taken care of the problem by maybe investing in a invisible fence or whatever.... Yesterday the dang dog got loose again and my daughter almost run over him with her car.She knocked at the neighbors door and talked to the neighbor and he again apologized and said he is trying. A couple hours later I was getting home from work and same thing.. I almost run over the dang dog on my driveway. I got off the car, grabbed the dog from the collar and knocked at the neighbors door telling him I almost run over their dog, his dog is disturbing my dogs ( which are inside my gated backyard) and also disturbing my chickens. This time it was their son who answered the door ( about 11 years old) he apologized and at that moment the dog ran loose again . What???
Today my son just told me that the dog is loose again. I got the dog in camera running loose by my chicken run. I really don't want to be "that neighbor" who complaints... However, I feel at this point I should call the none emergency police and report the problem. I don't want to wait until his dog decides to kill one of my chickens. These people obviously are not being responsible for their pet, they are not considerate to other neighbors, not caring if their large dog are bothering the neighbors. I have talked to them several time and every time they apologize and said they try to keep their dog in their property. Well... is not working... I am just plain pissed off guys. Sorry for the novel... I just needed to vent.

It happened! Finally have a hatched chick! :)

My Silkie pushed all the other eggs out last night, they were frozen when I went out this morning. Upon candling and then dissecting them, two were early failures and one was fully formed with beak and eyes and feathers. Of course, I could have tried putting it back under, but as I said, the eggs were out all night and frozen this morning. Not sure what happened there, maybe as she's a 10 month old first time broody, she just panicked when the one started hatching and abandoned the others. I'm guessing she'll do better next time. :) Welcome any feedback.

Nonetheless, this is a success! I've added to my flock and have a new member that is hopefully a hen. :)
How is your baby chick doing ?

You know you have spoiled chickens when ....
you bring them into the basement for the night because the temp is dropping below zero. The good news is that it's only for the night. I leave the seramas outside in a heated coop if the temps are in single digits or above. Exception = the spoiled house rooster!

Update from the odd family:

MaiMai cares for her little and big chick. Solo is still skeptical about her new cage-mates. I can understand being afraid of the silkie, but she's also afraid of the little black chick that follows her around. Thankfully, MaiMai and the chick do not attack Solo, so perhaps she'll gain more trust over the next few weeks. At least she no longer runs away from them.

Getting down to 8 here tonight, so wanted her and momma to be warm.

A balmy 8'F sounds nice! It's going down to -4'F (will feel like -18'F) Nothing like the past few winters, but cold enough to bring the seramas inside for the night. One serama is sitting on an egg that's due to hatch this weekend, so I decided to play it safe.

I'm glad your chick & silkie are doing well. Take some pics when it warms up a bit.

Solo is so cute, seems she was posing for the picture :)

I had a horrible event also with neighbor dogs. Please feel free to vent! 2 of them running loose killed 2 of our bottle baby goats 13 years ago. My Dad was outside getting his paper and saw the whole thing. The larger dog turned towards my Dad and intended to attack him also. He didn't have his glasses on, just went to get his paper. He actually threw rocks to defend himself! He had called me so we arrived to see those goats kids die and my Father in tears. County police told us to shoot any dog that acts as a predator. We live here now and if I see any aggression in a stray dog they get shot. Any dog that's a pet becomes a predator if it's not confined and controlled.
