INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ok so tonight the FF was good and bubbly, had a sweet smell to it. I measured out 6 cups of drained FF and fed them in 3 bread pans. They inhaled it. It was too funny, took about 30 seconds for the first to actually taste it and once she did it was on! They ate for about 5 min or so and walked away wiping their beaks off on the grounds, then back for seconds. 9 - 3 month old and 6 - 2 month olds ate about 4 cups total. So right around a 1/4 cup each. Total took about 20 min for them to eat.

I already have plenty in the bowl for them for tomorrow, so I only added a little to the main pot. Now do I leave their dry food in with them for the night? Right now it is out, they have water and their grit in the brooder box, they will go back outside to their temp run tomorrow for feeding of FF again and spending a day in the pen.

Now onto the coop. I got 3 walls up today. No pics, my battery charger for my camera is lost somewhere in another state. DD hasn't replaced it yet :( Need to run for more lumber tomorrow to finish the last wall and roof. Will also add at least 2 windows for now and probably 2 more later. Oh and I need to make the door. But I have my grand daughter tomorrow, it will be Sunday before I can finish. UGH!

When did you want to have new homes for them? I have an excess of hens, but they are still only about 3 to 5 weeks old yet. I could trade you a couple hens for a couple roos

I would be willing to do that. What kind of hens do you have? I will only rehome to someone for pets or breeding. Not food. lol I'm weird I know.

It's due to turkeys being susceptible to Blackhead disease and chickens are not. So your chickens can be a carrier and be just fine, but if you add turkeys you risk them catching the disease. That is my understanding. Not all areas have blackhead in the soil though, so you may never have an issue. I believe there is someone you can call to see if there are reports of blackhead in your area, just can't remember who it is.

I think I will give Perdue University a call Monday. If they can't help me, they may be able to direct me to the right people. I know that my neighbor had chickens and turkeys awhile ago. Maybe 8 years ago or so. Lost all of his chickens to owls and butchered his turkeys. He kept them all together in the same open faced coop.

Unfortunately we decided to put our coop close to where he had his coop. Maybe 50' away. Ours in in the southerns part of the yard, his was on the northern part, but still too close for my liking.I told my hubby we shouldn't put it there, as I was sure his interest would be renewed once he knew we got chickens. DH said oh no he too lazy he won't get them again. Lo and behold! They are also getting chickens! My coop is almost done! Too late to move it now! What do I do? Can two coops be that close to each other with out causing any problems?

so if it's in the soil your up a creek pretty much anyway, so it's dependant 90% or more if the chickens are carriers, how may years does it stay in the soil, I live on property that was farm land turned housing development 40-50 years ago.

What kind of hens do you have? I'm looking for one more but I want it to be a pretty breed. Ie Swedish flower hen, sebright, laced wynadotte, etc.
I have Leghorns and a RIR cross (not the prettiest) but I do have two golden laced wyandottes and a pretty chick but I am not sure of her breed. Unfortunately the "pretty ones" are rescues, they are missing their wing feathers right now!
