INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am bumping my post because I really need you guys!! I know irritating huh, lol. I Just commited to a pair of SQ silkies I am picking up sunday, I am trading my blue cochin cockerel for them. I am kinda at a loss right now with my cockerels and I could really use some advice from you all. I think I may be BYC codependent.

Quote: sparky and lava are tough calls, can't see well enough but they may be pullets. Think you have them pegged pretty well. There's too many boys for the hens, they will wear them to death. So your options are chicken math, add more pullets, or rehome some roos. Wish I could help more, they are breeds I don't have except for the wyandottes..

Does anyone know why you can not put chickens and turkeys together?
I do, my grandparents did, but.. do call the County extension services, check for blackhead.

Ok so tonight the FF was good and bubbly, had a sweet smell to it. I measured out 6 cups of drained FF and fed them in 3 bread pans. They inhaled it. It was too funny, took about 30 seconds for the first to actually taste it and once she did it was on! They ate for about 5 min or so and walked away wiping their beaks off on the grounds, then back for seconds. 9 - 3 month old and 6 - 2 month olds ate about 4 cups total. So right around a 1/4 cup each. Total took about 20 min for them to eat.

I already have plenty in the bowl for them for tomorrow, so I only added a little to the main pot. Now do I leave their dry food in with them for the night? Right now it is out, they have water and their grit in the brooder box, they will go back outside to their temp run tomorrow for feeding of FF again and spending a day in the pen.

Now onto the coop. I got 3 walls up today. No pics, my battery charger for my camera is lost somewhere in another state. DD hasn't replaced it yet :( Need to run for more lumber tomorrow to finish the last wall and roof. Will also add at least 2 windows for now and probably 2 more later. Oh and I need to make the door. But I have my grand daughter tomorrow, it will be Sunday before I can finish. UGH!

great news on the FF, you will be glad you started it. I only feed my adult birds 1x a day, you can leave free choice.
I try to keep my coops "feed free" to help prevent predators at night, try a few different things to see whats working best for you.

I had heard about not putting chickens and turkey together, however I am seen many pictures with them both running around together. I have turkeys on one side of the barn and chickens on the other just in case.
Glad I did since the Tom turned out to be all testosterone filled.

I was cleaning and feeding my girls yesterday and I smelled a skunk. Going to have to get a flashlight and investigate underneath the barn. Do not want a skunk getting into my girlies.

For cute factor... Sitting outside yesterday before opening the chicks to let them out I heard baby crows coming from the coop. As it is all locked up I do not know who it was, but I have my ideas. Never heard a baby crow before. I don't think my RIR started crowing til close to 20 weeks.

Going to post a few pictures later, maybe someone can help me sex one of my chickens. I thought he was a boy, but now I am not so sure. As I am not super familiar with the breed. Maybe someone can help me out.

Lucky. 8 years of raising chickens, only one straight run chick we've ever bought has been female. I've stopped bothering with straight run unless I want roosters. We did have one 'lucky' girl that was in a batch of birds that were supposed to be roosters (well, okay, long story short, someone tried to screw us on our first chickens by giving us as many cockerels as they could).

Wow we feel even more lucky now. It's funny (barely) and not so funny (really, not funny at all) about that person loading you up with cockerels for your first chickens. Lots of crowing, eh? I had a dream last night that mine started crowing, and I was chasing them lol.

We are trying to finish the run today, before the rain comes. Need to make a human entrance, attach all the fencing, hang the wagon wheel, build a bunch of limbs for them to climb on, maybe make a small roof to help keep us dry, gah, I better not try to read all 80 posts here in the last 24 hours. This chicken thing is addicting!

I love Olivers feather dusting feet. He can sweep the floor as he walks, eh? I see why you want him to stay. Sorry, we have two roos and don't want any more.

My lazy butt has not even been to the store to pick up any buckets yet. Maybe I will do that today... We shall see.
