INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

SallyinIndiana posted: On a different note, we found a cat in our back barn yesterday. It won't come out though not even for food or water. I want to keep it but I need to get it out to take to the vet to make sure it is not a house pet and of course that it has all of its shots.

Have you tried tuna or something like that to lure the kitty out? I'm glad you want to take it to the vet to be checked, have shots to protect against rabies, etc., and hopefully spay/neuter it. (my soapbox is spay/neuter)

Went to swap meet today! Had a blast. I sold just about all the chickens I took except 4 little white chicks. BUT I left home with cages full and came back home with cages full! LOL I didnt even have to spend any of my own money. Here is some pics of new chickens.

OEG Bantam hen

Lemon Blue OEG Dont think he is to standard tho. It should have more yellow. ROO

Silver Spangled Hamburg HEN

2 White Frizzle Roos. One is in nest box.. Feathers in poor shape Got these for free

Black Sizzle Roo. Feathers in bad shape as well. Got him for free as well with the 2 frizzles.

Pekin Duck Drake along with Mallard Drake.

Better pic of Mallard Drake. I also got a Mallard hen but forgot to get pic of her. The small duck is Pekin as well I got today.

Em- mine were from RK. Lost the whole batch! Have no idea what happened!! Everything was just like my other batches! Food, water, heat!! Still heartbreaking!!

I'm going to have to try FF again. All these birds are eating me out of house and home. Can't get all these boys grown and gone soon enough!!

I'm holding out for the swap at Milton Ky, Mother's Day. It's the closest to me. Can't wait. It's where I got my BO roo and 1 hen lat fall. There was way too much to choose from. From snakes to ponys to peacocks to parakeets to rabbits to chickens and more! Oh and guns too, now how fun is that! And no I wasn't looking at the guns , but it gave a certain ambiance to the place .haha

Quote: owls can eat chickens.
Quote: bird netting is nice but it won't keep mice out. once your chickens are bigger they will kill mice if they are not over fed. Kind of like a lazy cat will catch a mouse if forced to.

humane trap for racoons put a can of cat food or tuna in the back behind the tipping device and sprinkle another can down the floor of the trap out the door and a little in front of it.

Age would help to confirm, but by how dark her barring is, I say girl.

Fellow bird watcher here! I get all excited when I spot something in the area that I've never seen before, but it seems like no one understands.

My curse in life.

And I think I've caught up on all the posts now.

He/ she is around 8 weeks. I suspected a roo as the comb came in really quick. As it has grown I am not sure as the comb stopped growing and stayed light coloured. I will be dead excited if it is a pullet as we were looking at getting rid of 'him' if it was a boy. He /she is definatly my favourite.

Not to rub anyones nose in it. With my TSC survivors I think I have mostly girlies. One obvious roo and the silkie I won't know about until much older.
Waiting to see how the ones I got from Brad go. Still hard to tell on the lavenders as they are still so small, but I am feeling optimistic on the cochins.

Glad to find a fellow bird watcher. I understanding spotting something new is always exciting. Or that 'oh what is that' and not having a clue and trying to recollect when you get back home to have a look in the book. Love taking my wee one to the park so we can see if we spot something new. Something we are going to be doing tomorrow.

Your bird is an Easter-egger.

Very pretty, too!

This is the standard for Araucanas, not Ameraucanas. Two VERY different breeds.
Yeah, it's terrible what people do sometimes.

My mom and I went to a swap meet and saw a guy with a cage full of barred Rock cockerels--spurs starting, sickle tail feathers, mighty combs--and the cage was labelled 'pullets'. Ugh.

If you're wondering (but mostly because I like to show off my birds

), the only straight run girl I've gotten is my Easter-egger, Merlin:

She's a very beautiful, striking looking hen! She even has a little frizzle up-do. When it's not rainy, I will have to take better photos of my Road Runner. Mine has slate gray legs, ear muffs, and a beard. However, she is colored more like yours (as you could tell in the egg laying photo) and the Ameraucana site you listed (in a later post) has no such color. The "brown-red" one they showed is really dark, mostly brown. As I said before, I could care less if mine is an EE, but it's really interesting to compare and contrast the different types. Is yours really fast? If I'm digging for worms, she stands back since she is the bottom of the pecking order, but she can spot a worm and zip in and grab it faster than the others can even think. After the others are done looking for worms and have moved on, she will stay by me and talk real sweetly while I find her more worms. She knows I look out for her. Road Runner also runs really fast (outran a Lab dog), but her normal demeanor is more calm, yet she can be skittish. Sorry to ramble on... others have mentioned their EEs being shy and/or skittish, so I'm wondering how yours acts. Thanks for posting the info and links!
