INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I believe I have a Frizzle on my hands.
Being a noobie I ran here to get info. The two Buff Cochin Bantams I have (ended up being 2 roos) aren't feathering out like any of my other chickens have. Their feathers are flipping out more than hugging their bodies & give me the impression of someone crimping their hair lol
Is this what Frizzle does? I vaguely heard this discussed before. Curious momma here. They're cute as a button but definitely different.

I thought the same thing with my barred Cochin.

Turns out they are rather fluffy with crazy feathering until they get older.

Ugh, hard to tell on the pictures, but all the feathers were curling upwards.

Looks like she needed a straigtening iron to fix the frizz. She is now a big fluff ball instead.

I need to go to rehab. Once again I went to auction intending to buy 2 sheep I left with 1 lamb 12 cuckoo Marans 12 Turkish and 20 silkies. All I wanted was 2 sheep and one showgirl

Hello, I'm (insert name here) and I'm addicted to chickens and Dinky's. hey think of it this way 2 different support groups! lol but dinky's one has to be some other time than Friday night.

I went to Dinkys one time last year, been wanting to go as I kept hearing about it. I will NEVER GO back nor would I ever buy poultry from them.

Boxes stacked on top of each other , on shelves, with no air holes, no water !!!. I made the comment to some people I knew about I bet when it got hot they had a lot of dead chickens. They told me they have seen it alot. Dead or dieing chickens there.. I would not buy, it just encourages the horrible treatment of birds, not only that but when you buy from a place like that, you are probly going to bring some diese home. I personally think they should be arrested for animal cruelty

Done with my rant!!.

I've never gone, myself, and now I know I never will. Although personally, I don't like to take the risk of buying adult birds anymore anyway.

There was birds there in cages or at least something where they could get air, very few had water, But these were setting on the ground. But half if not more were stacked on those shelves. on top of each other !!

The rest of the place seemed ok. Had some beautiful furniture !!!

I only buy birds from people I know, who I KNOW have clean flocks.

Just a friendly warning /suggestion. My first 5 chickens I ever purchased came from Dinkey's. $4 for the box. The cute picture above is a possible Showgirl mix, A week or so after owning the chickens I noticed the 'Showgirl' gasping. Yup, turns out she had Gapeworm. She was with all the other chickens the same time too. We ended up having to cull her. Broke my heart. A friend took the remainder and said they all ended up with it. So, on that note. Please please make sure you quarantine any poultry you get from Dinkey's. Just in case. I would happily buy from there again, but not without keeping them separated until I know they are clean and healthy. Surprised I kept going after my first chicken experience. Few weeks later my DH purchased me 10 RIR's as he felt so bad about the chickens. Never looked back.
I defiantly quarantine any new animal and I try and buy from the same seller every time I've heard good things about their birds and they sell a lot of just hatched birds there.the boxes are clean done nice with fresh pine and good ventilation. If someone is new to dinky's the best advice I can give is ask people questions, scrounge through the boxes and see what's for sale. Don't bid on the first box of the breed you want as the last box sells for $1 a bird a lot of the times and pay attention to the box it tells you a lot about the seller and if they care about the animals

I don't condone big farm practices but I do understand them and dinky's is not a place to buy for some. I do know that when I buy birds from there they are getting a better home than most and I'm not paying $3 to $9 a bird at TSC or a big hatchery to risk mail service abuse

I'm trying my hand at incubating some more eggs later tonight. My last batch of chicks is all sold on craigslist and I would like to improve my hatch rate. Last time only half of the eggs hatched.
I am planning on minimizing my flock for winter so if anyone is interested in production RIR come October, I should have some full grown hens available. I can promise that they are not in tiny cages and they have lots of food and water.

Got back about 2 hrs ago from the Wolf lake swap. It was nice, but a lot of garage sale/flee market type stuff. Game type chickens, quail, pheasants, and peafowl were everywhere though! Good number of dogs (when will Indiana outlaw puppy mills!). I was proud of myself when we were walking back to the car with the carrier still empty. That is until we came up to the very last booth that just had got there and unpacking. My weakness! Silkies and showgirls. Yes I was just complaining how have too many chicks and then buy more!

There were several juvie's and adults, but wasn't happy with the way they look. Plus, I'm not a fan of buying adult birds as I don't have. Great quarantine area for them. So tis last book was week olds, hatched this past Tuesday (2 showgirls little older). I have no idea the quality but they were ok cute to pass up. Silkies and showgirls are the only thing this guy breeds so hoping they turn out nice. Im not sure how silkied the older two showgirls will be. they were freebies though.

Enough talking, here are the pictures

Just curious, how much you selling the chicks for? I've ha an a on Craigslist for a while with little or no interest. I don't think my asking prices are of high, but maybe I'm wrong?
