INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well I think I'm in trouble! We were in Aurora today and I noticed a Orscheln store. I piped off with" I wonder if they still have chicks" to my DH. He responded " Oh no, didnt you read that they've had a chick shortage this year??? You bought them all"!!!!! Guess I better quit now!!

On a different note. At what age is a good age to send Roos to freezer camp. I'm ready to spend more time with girls and there are too many boys in the way!! If the girls start laying around 20 weeks is that when the boys go bye bye?? And if any one needs a rooster to keep not eat( they are already promised) I have em!!!! GLW, RIR,Millie's, a white Leghorn.

Hey all! I am new to BYC and new to raising chickens too! I will catch up on the past week or so of this thread, so I know what is going on, but I just wanted to introduce myself!

My name is Melissa and I live in southern Indiana. I have seven beautiful six week old Wyandottes, three SLW and four GLW. So far, it looks like six are pullets and one is a roo.

Looking forward to learning more about raising these cute chicks. :)

Hello all ye Hoosiers! I live in Dubois County. I have had chickens for almost 2 months and I am in love with all my girls (at least I hope they're all girls!) I have 21 of various breeds and I love seeing their personalities change as they are getting older. And contrary to what I have heard/read, I have two turkeys in the yard with the chickens and they protect them and snuggle up at night. I haven't seen a fight yet!

I have already gone through the ups and downs of buying and losing some of my flock. I had a beautiful Barred Rock named Agnes that fell into a crevice and couldn't get upright; the next day I found her and cried. I cried over a chicken I had for a month. But she was the first one that didn't go crazy when I wanted to hold her.

My dad and I are currently building a house for them. Teaching them to go in at night will be fun since they have been free-ranging 24/7 lately!

The most amazing thing I have seen so far is there was recently a big, bright, full moon and when I got home around 10:30 that night, the 8 oldest girls were lined up on the fence just a "purring" away. If I would've had a camera handy it would've been a great photo.

I am becoming fluent in chicken speak and chicken math!! Glad to see we have an Indiana thread!

Oooooh! I think we have a broody girl on our hands. One of our black australorps was hanging out in a nest box first thing this morning. When we got home from church & went in the barn after lunch she was still in the same box. Hmmm, we thought. So my daughter checked & there were 3 eggs under her. Just to see what would happen, she collected the other 7 that were laid today & put them in with the hen, who promptly tucked them under her. She has been spread out over the 10 eggs the rest of the day & was still there when we closed up the barn around 9:30pm. A number of other girls wanted to use that box, but she growled at them & wouldn't move. Can't wait to see if she's still there in the morning!

John, Loved the pics!!! really good ideas, thanks for sharing!

Welcome. Don't wait to read this thread too long, or you may find out you are catching up on 100+ posts!

And don't forget, at 6 weeks old some may still be headed for freezer camp. Or dumplings.

Any pictures of your SLW? We have 2, on roo. He's cool so far. I think he's read some of my posts about freezer camp.
herebynightfall~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! We have many members who are happy to help. And just a note about Too Fast's mention of freezer camp and dumplings-- we have members (like myself) who have chickens just for pets while others have them for healthful farm to table food.

Wow, I still can't believe how busy this thread is! It's like it has exploded into a million conversations. I read through them all, but then can't remember who to reply to ;) just went to a graduation party and scored the HOG CARCASS for the dog.... she will be busy for a long time! I just hope she doesn't eat too fast and chuck it back up. She growled as the guys carried it to her pen, then realized the aroma! Wonder if chickens like pork? Probably.
On another note... the farmer that owns the fields around us planted today. I told him I would keep the chickens fenced for a couple weeks until the sprouts are tall enough they won't clear out a patch. The chickens will hate me... I feel an overthrow coming.
