INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

John, my husband told me to tell you he appreciates your sense of humor, reminds him of his dad when he gets going. thought you'd like to know...

Ok total Newb question here. If I build a coop out of a dog house and have a small very heavy duty run attached do I need to shut them into the coop every evening?

also those A-frame coops, are they okay for northern indiana winters? I am thinking of building a bachelors quarters for my extra boys

thanks

To those who butcher. How do u kill your meat birds? My husband chops their heads off i dont know if i can kill something. Ive been struggling with this for a while. Any suggestions? I have a lot of butchering to do today and dh wont get out of bed and start killing lol

Jchny- I'm so sorry your having such a hard time! It is truly heartbreaking to go thru. I saw som e raccoon poo here yesterday and can just feel it coming! Going to start with live traps, but there's a rifle by the door! When you spend soo much time with, money on and love them it sure is hard to see things go this way!!

I see a lot of you guys are losing animals to wild life. Did I really build a fortress or am I just that lucky? Coyotes cross around my house all the time, some wolves too I seriously suspect. Not to mention the plethora of weasels minks raccoons and opossums. And hawks are plentiful. What is the deal?
This is just a guess, but jchny has lots of fowl and as well as animals, so I assume the aromas permeate the woods much like a turkey baking in the oven permeates the house.

BYC site Phone-Tablet Use Problems

Itsjustme- My phone used to have an issue and it just recently changed. I think it started finding the mobile site rather than the regular site and its working much better. Maybe it was an update.

I just posted this to the owners- Nifty-Chicken on the Forum: Troubleshooting BYC Problems, Bugs, Error Messages & Other Issues

Hello,
Congratulations on your wonderful BYC website! It is addicting and members enjoy checking in throughout the day. However, having to switch from "desktop" to "mobile" to view BYC (and still may not have all the features of the desktop version depending on device) is a deterrent. I see many posts from frustrated members who have problems with BYC working with their phones or iPads. With the success of your site, will you soon be updating to a responsive website that easily adapts to any device-- a computer, tablet, or phone?
Thank you for providing this Forum.

I'll let you all know what their response is. They are a large enough business that they should have a "responsive" site because the switching to a different format type of site is quickly becoming outdated.

Ok, I have a question for everyone. 2 weeks ago I got my first egg, then later that day got another egg, same color Guessing only one EE started laying, the first egg was very cold when I found it, 2nd egg was warmer. Since then nothing. Is this normal? I have had 2 others start laying, Both are younger girls and I've seen them both lay eggs. They do lay in the next boxes. The first two eggs, there were no boxes up and they were laid on the floor of the coop. Did my first EE stop laying or is she laying out in the yard? Its mostly open area with just cut grass. I haven't been able to find any eggs outside at all. The old shed is still up, and i haven't been able to get in there to check for eggs, the roof collapsed and its very crowded in there. Hopefully by next weekend it will be down. But in the meantime, should I be worrying?

Thanks!

Deb

A touch of insanity combined with half-heimers always shows through.

Dog house - How many feathered critters are you putting in a dog house? If you pack them in too tight, you may end up with them damaging one another. If the run is covered on top, I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you see digging around the run.

A-frame winter - If they have somewhere to get in out of the wind, they will be OK.

Put the hatchet and chicken in bed with him.

Thanks John, my in-laws gave me a very large very heavy dog house. I am looking at buying a 4 by 4 sheet of plywood to make a floor. I currently have 8 bantams. the biggest are the sebrights smallest are the OEGB. I am housing them in a great dane size wire dog crate tight now that had 3 perches/tree limbs stuck threw it. The dog house is a bit wider but not as tall.

I really liked the look of the coop with heavy duty run built around it, and then opening a door to let them free range for some of the day.

I know I can build an a frame style coop on my own for a bachelor pad, since it wont need a nesting box. I was just worried about the bad snow and cold we get up here by the lake. I don't want chicken-cicles.

Was just informed my husband has a 3 day "weekend:" this Tuesday to Thursday so Tuesday is coop retrofit day! the power tools are calling my name. But I know I won't get to play with them, get a couple of stitches and suddenly you aren't allowed sharp objects. geez.

Bantam question : is there a type of food folks have found is too big for them? I was mincing an apple up today and thinking it was silly. I don't really see me cutting all the kitchen scrap up really tiny s. Plus I got a bag of corn on sale its whole not cracked, I saved it until they were bigger but will they ever actually be big enough for whole corn and sunflower seeds? Thanks
