INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi Everyone,

It's been awhile since I posted this invite, since then there have been tons of posts and lots of new people on the thread that may not have seen it. Even if you have no chickens and are just thinking about getting them, you will find no better time and place to talk to people who are living what you are contemplating. You will also find that they are willing to talk about it in Nauseating detail...... It's also a good time to remind everyone to pm me if you are coming so that I know who to send directions and contact info to.

Unless someone tells me the name is taken, I am henceforth calling this 'Indiana Poultryfest'. (It sounds better than 'that chicken party'.

So:

  • Come see our birds : We have 30 chickens (14 Breeds) and 9 turkeys (3 Varieties).
  • Come see our coop(s) : chicken and human..... Both have been built recently and we love to show them off.
  • Come meet some people : Lots of chicken/turkey/duck/quail/goose/farm/backyard/etc...stories will be shared
  • Come learn something new : If anyone wants to show up early (around 11), we will be doing a workshop/demo on chicken processing. If you have a bird to process, go ahead and bring it. If that isn’t your thing, We promise to be done and cleaned up before everyone else arrives at 3.

INVITATION!!! It's a [COLOR=00FF00]CHICKEN PARTY

I've been talking to jchny2000 about her idea for a get-together for the Indiana BYCers. She wasn't able to find a good place to hold it near her house, so I am volunteering to have it at my place.

On Sunday 28 July, my DSO (Significant Other) and I are going to host a meeting of the Central Indiana Poultry Enthusiasts. This is a small club of chicken folk from the general Indy area that meet every other month at the house of one of the members. We admire the hosts chickens and coops, talk endlessly about our birds, and shamelessly steal their best ideas to make our chicks more comfortable (kinda like we do on here!

)

We'd like to invite anyone from the forum here that would like to come and meet other people as crazy about chickens as we are.

Here are some details and Ideas.

The meeting is usually from 3 to 5 or 6ish. Bring a lawn chair and a snack to share. Drinks will be provided. The DSO loves to cook, so there will be some fun things to eat too. There will be a tour of our coop and run setup and a meet and greet with our chickens and turkeys. We call it a meeting, but it really is just a chance to socialize with other chicken folk.

One of the things that was talked about was a workshop on processing poultry. I am blessed/cursed with an overabundance of boys at the current time. So I would like to propose that anyone interested in this portion of chickendom can show up around 11, and we can put on the workshop then. If you have a bird that needs to have that 'One Bad Day', go ahead and bring it. I can promise to have at least one bird for demo purposes and will probably have more than that if one or two people want to try their hand at it. For those that are not interested in this, we promise to be done and all cleaned up before 3.

Another idea is that if you know someone else who is coming and would like to arrange to swap/sell/transfer birds, that is fine by me. I have a large garage that has never seen my chickens, so I can offer it up as a place to keep birds being swapped so that they can be out of the sun and not kept in a car. Please make your arrangements ahead of time, and only bring birds that are already spoken for.

Our farm is located just east of Mooresville, IN. Which is located just SW of Indy not too far from the airport.

I'm just paranoid enough about things to not want to post my address and phone number on the forum where it is available to anyone and everyone, so what I would like to propose is that if you are interested in coming, please send me a PM, and I'll put together an email to send out to the participants with all the pertinent details.

If you have any questions, or suggestions, send me a note.

Hope you can make it!

My spell checker here promises that if you come, he will be more than happy to entertain you with his cuteness. (Don't tell him that he will be at that awkward age by then....)
this is such a generous offer. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but hope you all have a great turn out and time! Be sure to post some pictures!
thanks pbirdhaven, that gives me more to think on.. If I was able to hatch then I could add a few every few years, and have them a lot longer! They are really hard to find around here. So far the closest I found is Richmond area. racinchickins/Patrick, I will be there and the family has been told this IS my chicken friends day! I will come as early as you need, and bring a turkey for his one bad day. All the equipment I need, including knives, cooler and a large pot for water/propane cooktop thing. Will be a good one to share with everyone due to his size, easier to see everything. guys, please keep jsummers in your thoughts & prayers, her family is really having a bad week. Sending :hugs out to her and the family. Have been working on my coop and runs for a few weeks, starting to feel like my babies are safe again. Back to working on the cattle fence next week, hopefully! Hay prices are good and still dropping right now, seeing tons of round bales everywhere! The morale at the farm supply stores is much better lately too. I need to find a used baler, we are getting a lot accumulated off the 3+ acres that we mow. Has anyone else's geese stopped laying? my girls have, and my ducks are nearly done too i think :( Guineas are doing well, and the chickens I stopped hatching for a few weeks. Focusing on the few waterfowl eggs I am still getting, and adding new breeds. If anyone offers true ameraucana hatching eggs, I am interested! Looking for BBS. I just had a zero hatch on a batch of 12. Really disappointing, none ever developed! I watched this ebayer for months and was a total let down on my eggs, I can rarely leave the house due to my mom, so I have to have them shipped. I am done trying to use eBay unless it is someone from BYC. If anyone does, I would love to pick them up at the get together!
hoping the best for jsummers! Poor hatches just plan suck lol. I bought some "surplus" eggs from a guy that he couldn't get in his bator. I think I paid $25 or $35 for 2 dozen eggs. only 2 developed from the whole batch, and only one hatched. Get with heather and sally (sebrightmom and little ameraucana mom) for hatching eggs! I think heather has LF and Sally has bantams. I think I went a little crazy these last two weeks and ordered a few too many eggs! Have 6 tolbunt polish, 24 rhodebar, and 36 legbars all due to arrive tomorrow, Monday, and Wednesday! For my sake, a dozen of each were ordered this past spring and just now getting sent out.

animallover2202- sorry about your cat I hope you find her, my best friends cat did the same thing, but after about a month he came back.

bradselig- I hope you have a giant incubator lol, good luck hatching.

In reference to the Peafowl Posts
There's a landscaping business a few miles away from me that has 48 acres, tons of plants/trees, etc. for sale. The owners live on the property and have 100 chickens and several peacocks including a white one that was doing his mating dance when we were there. When the female peacocks weren’t interested, he danced for the hens! haha They weren’t impressed either. I saw one peacock on top of the office building and one standing on top of one of their big trucks. They are gorgeous, but LOUD. Here are a few pictures my daughter took:

He walks around like he owns the place and helps himself to a nibble from his favorite plants.

This one reminds me of Princess Diana going down the aisle with her long train.

He's taking a rest after being rejected by peahens and chickens!

These are soooo pretty! I like how the one just helps himself to whatever he wants lol.

Thanks for the ISPA link, I had no clue of any of it. I found the fee's for the diagnostics, but nothing stating that ISPA paid for it.

I talked with the family last night, so that they all understood the reality of the situation. It pretty daunting experience. Lots of information to sort through. Lots of feeling to sort through. We do want whats best for these girls. So I will be taking them to Purdue. To pay for the blood testing seems all fine and dandy, if I really wasn't sure this was mericks. But the ocular change in two of my birds really kind of sealed the deal for me. Is there anything else out there that will change the pupil of a chickens eye? I've had chickens for 5 1/2 months, some of you have years of chicken experience. I can only find information on mericks. Please if anyone knows of anything else, please advise.

Deb
I am so sorry to hear about your flock. It's every chicken owner's nightmare-- especially your first flock. I can't imagine. It's good that you're going to Purdue. We're all thinking of you and your family. Please keep us posted.

Ok so maybe I was bored today. I got on the ABC website and printed of a coloring page of a ameraucana bantam hen and colored it. I tried to color it like a wheaten but their is only so much you can do with a box of crayons lol.

Well, after yammering away about not having names for my chickens, meet Eloise, 6-week old Jersey Black Giant.

I found her limping and determined that her leg was broken. My wife and granddaughter (Ellie) helped me put Popsicle stick splints on her leg, wrapped with elastic bandage material (like what they use to hold the cotton ball on your arm after blood draw). That was several days ago and it's still there. It's on the left leg just above the ankle (the trailing leg in the photo).

I named it Eloise in honor of the help Ellie (13) gave in treating the leg. She is thrilled and checks on Eloise every time she comes over, which is more often no that she has a chicken.

She (the chicken, not Ellie) is putting a little weight on the foot, although she very much favors it.
If she doesn't re-injure it before the bone mends, she may survive this. Yea!!!!!!!!

Old Salt~ I guess you had to come up with a name other than "Jersey" since I already took that one for mine. haha Coincidentally, I was thinking of naming my Jubilee "Eloise" because I have an online friend from England (besides Queen vivkichicki) named Eloise (I've played "Draw Something" with her for over a year-- BYC and DrawS is the extent of my online social life.) haha Anyway, I didn't name her Eloise because I knew she'd become "Ellie," and one of my daughter's BFs is named Ellie. I'm sure your granddaughter is honored to have a chicken named after her, but I wasn't sure if my daughter's friend would be!

I'm glad to hear Eloise is "walking it out." She looks like she's doing physical therapy-- following her instructor up the steps. Is that a blue/black splash or lavender/blue splash orp in your photo? Or do I see feathered feet?

racinchickins~ I am still planning on attending your Poultry Party event; I just haven't PMd you yet for details, but I will tomorrow. I think my DH will be attending, too if that is okay. Than you again for letting jchny talk you into this. haha

Peaceful Walls & bradselig~ Congrats on the successful hatch and new babies!

vickichicki~ Funny turkey cartoon! (I'm not the only cartoon poster) And great story about Mama Turkey...she'll wonder where the redheads came from. ha

kaphyper~ I just love that Gus! He is so striking looking.

jsummers~ Sending good thoughts your way. : - )

You didn't miss nothing, glanced back through and noticed I really did not talk about the turkeys all that publically.

Momma turkey went broody, started with 7 eggs.. towards hatch time we were down to two. Lots of feathers in the cage so I think Tom turkey was maybe stealing them.
Well time passed and a little more time passed, she was still sitting on them. After a long thought I decided to buy a couple of chicks and replace the dud eggs with live chicks. I picked up two chicks, one RIR and one RIR mix from SallyinIndiana (adorable they are too).
So we crept in one night, pushed a rather angry mom off eggs and popped the two chicks in there. I was very worried she might end up killing them, but at this point she was going to brood herself to death. She has been sitting for well over a month.
Next day... Trilling content mother with two live chicks under her.
Oh happy days :D

I still have the roosters. No response from Craigslist on those. Going to take the add off and put them on the BTS section here. Maybe I will have more luck.

Edited to add...

For everyone information... dud eggs can be highly explosive and they produce one of the most putrid smells I have ever in my entire life smelt
sickbyc.gif
That sure is the truth, eh? My son was playing with some goose eggs he found, and one opened. It was the worst smell ever, he got some on his hands, and I made him hold his hand out the window for the 25 minute drive and the car still smelled horifically during that drive. Imagine a 6 year old holding his hand as far away as possible! We tried wiping it on some grass but no luck.

So after reading this the brain runs on overtime and a dialogue started playing out......

Tom: Look Momma.. Don't take this the wrong way... But the kids look just like the Rooster in the next coop over.
Momma: Don't be so ridiculous.. I have not been with anyone else.. How can I, we are keep in the same pen.

Six months later on Maury Povich..

Maury: Tom.... You are NOT the father

Momma faints.

So this is how my brain works... Thought I would share :D
