INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wow I love hearing that egg-laying song.

Just heard it again, from one of our leghorns. Such a nice, medium sized perfect egg. She usually lays in the morning, and I don't get to hear her since I'm at work then, but did hear it just now.

Chick-chick-chick-chick-chicken, lay another egg for me (singing).

Congrats, racin!  Although I'm with John, are you sure it's not a sparrow egg lol.  We are getting our first eggs from a new layer, and they are small but getting bigger.  She laid her first 5 days ago.

When I saw it, my first thought was 'that's funny, I don't have any Banties'. Lol. But then I did some reading up on Phoenix eggs, and it says they lay small eggs, and not often. She was one of my mystery pullets that I couldn't identify until very recently, so I haven't read up on then like I have the others. I totally thought the Egyptian Fayoumi pullet would lay first, but her comb is just turning pink now. The Leghorns may even beat her to it.

My RIR are about 15 weeks old, give or take a few days...one of my hens is VERY curious of the nesting boxes. We find her in one a couple times a day. She hops in one, sits for about 3 minutes and hops back out?!?

You could probably google this to confirm,... Most birds lay in the morning. By midday all of my girls have done their laying for the day. Most times they are done by 10:30.
Guess they hate missing the best part of the day.

Does anyone know an approx age for EE's to start laying?

I know laying age differs with breeds. My barred Cochin is 22 weeks and her comb and waffles are looking redder everyday so I know she is close.
The EE two of mine are showing redder faces... Just love to know an approx age. Are they late bloomers?

Aw, long lost sisters!

Thanks for putting them together-- I had to show my DH- he agrees that they look like long lost sisters...and they are two different breeds. It will be interesting to see what they look like at maturity

Can everyone pray that my dad doesn't go blind in one eye he has shingles from his head to his eyebrow and its creeping down to his eye he's a butcher so I cant have him go blind in one eye he's taking meds for the shingles and in a couple of days he goes back to the doctors to see if its in his nerve so please pray he doesn't .....had 1 pullet dye yesterday and 2 cockerels dye today
on the good side I gave Mr. Frizz a bath to get poop off his feet and but he looks cute now

Oh, Your dad is in my thoughts!!

This is what I'm scared of, besides cancer of course-- I even asked the Walgreens staff at what age the shingles vaccine is started- they said 60 which I think is not right, especially people who have a high risk of getting it, even kids. I have had chicken pox 3x and I've had a severe case of hand, foot & mouth disease as an adult. I have been told by a number of people that having had both puts me at a high risk of getting shingles. It doesn't help all those commercials on TV. I just hope that even though the risk is there, I don't end up getting it-- not to mention what I posted above about this new virus I "have" ugh...my DH wonders why I'm so anal about medical matters!

sorry about the double posting.....but as I was typing that first message about our first eggs, i heard the sound of the "i gotta lay an egg" song. So i hurried up and finished my post, scrambled to put my boots and went out to the coop.....to my delight there was yet another egg!!! so 3 now in total!!! this is so cool now...it's almost like a game of "find the egg!" i would like to say thank you to who ever posted the video of her hen doing the "i gotta lay an egg" song song... because of that video, i was able to distinguish between normal sounds and egg laying sounds!! this is so cool i love this!!!
Congrats on the "egg laying song" I can't wait till mine does that! The good thing is that by the time mine are ready to lay I may be able to be home more with my new job...maybe :)

Happy Day! We joined the 'New Egg' group! I noticed one of the silver phoenix pullets was messing around in the nest box earlier today and when I went to look later, here is what I found!

We were given two Welsummer hens that were already laying, and here is the new egg next to one of theirs that I also collected today. It's tiny, just the cutest thing! Also one of those Welsummers has decided she is broody, so I have my first broody hen too. She snuck off and is sitting on two eggs.

Congratulations-- any new layers should be celebrated

but I am sorry about your broody! hopefully she can hatch those and then start laying again soon

I just had my first 100% hatch rate. It was only 9 eggs but still after all of the trouble I had with shipped eggs it made my night tonight to come home and see that last one out of the shell.
Awesome Sally! Congrats :) I want to hatch but I think I should wait until I finish my degree...Hopefully You keep with it and start having more 100% rates

CHICKEN POEM

My mother feeds me chicken
The chicken makes me cough
I wish that when she makes it
She'd take the feathers off.

John
Love it!
HELP PLEASE! Unfortunately, it's my turn for dealing with a chicken health problem. When my Barred Rock Hen was on the perch ready for bed, I looked up and saw this red, sore area. It's between her legs. The photo is a weird angle, but you can tell that the bulge is the curve between her We examined her carefully inside the house with a flashlight and saw no signs of mites or lice (although we aren't experts). We looked under her wings and around her vent. I examined the coop with a flashlight because I read that tiny black, moving mites would be visible, but I didn't see any. I spend around three hours a day with my hens because I've been working on landscaping. She has acted completely normal, so I was shocked to notice this area this evening. My other four hens seem to be fine. Luckily, I have not moved my pullets in with the hens yet. Does anyone have any thoughts? You can click on the photo for a closer view. Thank you.

Aww I'm sorry she is ill :( Obviously I don't have any experience but I hope all your efforts can help her feel better

Thanks vickichicki for your suggestions about Tweedy's mystery sore area. My first thought was that it reminded me of a "hot spot" that dogs or cats get from allergic reactions--so maybe she is allergic to something. The perch is smooth. When I looked in my chicken books, the only descriptions of featherless areas like hers seemed to be mites or lice, but the photos showed mites or lice on the area and she doesn't appear to have any. I just posted the info on the Emergency/Disease Forum in case anyone in familiar with the problem. My other hens look fine and they all have acted normally. I will check her out carefully again tomorrow and my other chickens as well. Coincidentally, today I started working on cleaning out the coop today with plans of moving my orp pullets in tomorrow. I'm so glad I noticed Tweedy's health problems! The pullets are going to have to stay in the basement dog crate at night for a while. They actually have a pretty nice set up, so they shouldn't mind.
I will be thinking about you and Tweedy today! :)

I like that "egg laying song" for us humans lol They can sing telling us they are gonna lay or they layed, we can sing to them so they will :)

Easter-eggers are late bloomers, so I would say look for eggs around 25 weeks or maybe even later than that. There are occasional EEs that are quick to mature, but most of them lay later.

Has it been very hot where you are? That could explain the color. It's not swollen or anything? It looks to me like the visible lump is just the breastbone, but it's hard to tell for sure. Also, are those pins in the picture or broken off feathers? Y'all might be seeing less of me for a little while. I fell yesterday and hurt my foot pretty bad. It wasn't too bad yesterday, but now it's swollen and sore to step on. :/ Doesn't feel painful enough to be broken, but I obviously did something. Oh, well. The good news is that the chicks, who I had been carrying out to their outside pen, were not hurt or traumatized by the fall. :)

Quote: It was with my genesis incubator. The temps are great with that one but keeping the humidity right is more effort than my still air one.

an early bloomer maybe. perhaps you will get an egg in a couple weeks. I agree with putting in a golf ball or wooden egg.
