So I have been throwing around the idea of fencing in my whole yard. I have 2 acres. Main reason for wanting to is to help prevent the chickens from wondering off property (they like to cross the road as well as visit the church next door. I was looking for opinions on the best fencing to do this. I'm thinking horse fencing that is 2x4 openings. Would 4 Feet be tall enough? I know most chickens could fly over this, But Would they? Would I be wasting my money? I also like the idea of having it all fenced in for the possibility of keeping other animals. Just looking for a good cheap way to accomplish this.

What you could do is fence around your yard but then also have a place where you have a run that is covered by other fencing or deer netting. That way on the really nice days except sundays (church) you can let them run around the whole yard but on sundays or when your gone they will be in the big covered run.

Well said, keep other critters out! I dont clip wings because of the hawks, so my ducks, chicken and guinea all fly. my only "big" predator problem is the stray dog but have been outside any time they range. This can be hard to do at times but its worked well. My other thought is to finally have a LGD here. I know of someone over in Cicero that keeps Pyrenees. Its my hope to get one this year also if he has pups available.

Yes keeping predators out would be great as well. Thankfully I don't have too many issues thus far. Hawks have been the only issue. The last one tried to attack them while I was out there with them! I was able to run in and get the gun and fired warning shots (I'm it willing to pay the fines and jail time for killing a bird protected under the migratory act lol) and it hasn't been back since. Cars have been my only other "predator". The chickens learned to cross the road from the guineas when I had them. Now I can't break them of it. And have observed that they have learned to run pretty fast across the road to avoid cars, but I still don't like it. I was hoping a fence would deter this behavior.

I'm still not sure exactly what other animals I'd like to keep. I've always had an interest in a couple of wallabies but would like to use a privacy fence so people don't sop and mess with them. An emo or two has also sparked my interest. Of course id want to double check the type of fence I would use for anything I'm even considering prior to purchase.

I've figured that I'd need around 1300 ft, so using the field fence wouldn't be too bad in price. Just wasn't sure if the 6x6 holes would do much protecting against smaller predators like opossums, raccoons, or skunks.

Yea,I use a covered pen now for on Sundays or for bad weather. It's 12x24 now but planning to enlarge it this spring. I also use it when I see a hawk. The chickens are then confined to the coop and covered run for several days in hoes the hawk will loose interest.
