INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

OH yep, I ferment the grains, usually cracked corn or scratch. I use some of that liquid and a little grain to start my new batches. Pretty soon, i will be using a whole lot more, my little australorps and almost 5 weeks old already!

no but i did now, WOW! I know mine have slowed way down, and had stopped a few weeks during molt too. That's awesome! I guess the do have a bad slow down in the winter months when the days are shortest. My BR is like clockwork, she pretty much never misses a day. the Wyandottes seem to be day on day off. My EE, forget it..she has laid 2 eggs since august. one was a gel egg, the other was a perfect olive green. nothing since

She is an odd bird, no personality and not real friendly. Nothing like others I have heard talk about, but she is really pretty.

we need more people involved to keep our thread active. If you have chickens, or any other fowl, livestock, critters you want to buy, sell or swap... lets get your info out there!
We would like to share feed mills, swap meets, veterinarians and any info that helps us keep our babies happy and healthy.

I planted the Mammoth Reds last year. Most are still in the garden but I have been feeding the chickens some. The beets all reached about 2 feet long and 20+ lbs. The chickens love them in the winter, but not so much when there is other stuff to eat.
As mentioned earlier, I'm looking at fencing in my whole yard (2 acres). I've found a reasonable way to get 2x4 welded wire fencing 5ft tall to use. How ever trying to figure out the posts. I'd rather use wood posts (like how they look) than T posts, but willing to consider either. Anyone know of anywhere to purchase fence posts (new or used) reasonably priced? I've looked at TSC, Rural King, Big R, Orschlens, Lowes and Menards. Thinking about trying fencing companies directly.
Contact your local electric company. Ours dropped the old poles directly in our yard when they were in the area replacing poles. Even if yours won't do that, you can usually go there and get free ones.

Baby...I obviously am very behind in reading through this thread...was glad to see you here! I'm still thinking about those cream legbars! I have to see how those SFHs do and whether they are pullets or cockrels first!

Well I fed my fermented feed to the chickens for the first time yesterday and they loved it. I also cleaned out their nesting boxes. And guess what they gave me as a gift for doing those things for them yesterday? They laid me 6 eggs today!! Some of you might be thinking "oh thats not much or what is so good about that" well let me tell you this.... they haven't laid any eggs in over a month except for a few ducks eggs this week. So 6 hens laying today all of a sudden was shocking. I went from 0 eggs to 6 in just one single day. So i have been brain storming why all of a sudden 6 hens laid today when i didn't even get 1 chicken egg in over a month. Could the fermented feed helped them that much already? Cleaning nest boxes help? Im sure it wouldnt be the nest boxes because hens dont choose when they want to lay. So was it the act of god or the fermented feed or both. LOL I know I know there was lots of questions in that paragraph but wasnt expecting anyone to answer all those questions. HAHA. All those questions is what was going threw my head all day. Whats your thoughts? ( You can answer that question. HAHA)

Mine are starting to pick up laying again too. But I can't attribute it to the ff since I've been doing that for several months. I'm wondering if the warm spell a couple weeks ago spurred something in the hormone system... Anyway, I'm glad they're starting to pick up!

I wanted to make a comment on the beets.... When you buy your seed, I encourage you to be ask the company where you purchase to certify that they are not genetically modified (GM or GMO). Many of the sugar beet varieties currently being sold are GM. I'm not sure about the mangle kind but it is definitely worth checking to be sure!
