INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So being cheap and wanting to get rid of heat lamps if possible, I've been looking into the EcoGlow by brinsea. I just couldn't get over the "high" price and decided to make my own. I have reptiles as well, so use FlexWatt quite often. I had some extra laying around and will be attaching it to a board (thinking corrugated plastic like yard sale signs are made from). I made the stand out of CPVC. I will have around $10-$15 total to make it. Here is a picture of the stand. So far none of it is glued together. I got out the dremel tool and ground down the inside of the "T" so I can raise and lower the FlexWatt. I will drill some holes along the legs so I can put a pin in to hold the platform at the desired height. I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Thanks. I'm excited to see how it turns out. I should be finishing it up tomorrow. Have to look at hobby lobby for the plastic sheet since I wasn't able to check being Sunday.

Hello from Evansville's Northside! I just happened to run across this thread and am happy to connect with fellow Hoosiers. We are first time chicken owners (since March 2012) and are lucky to have five hens. I have always been a cat person, but I quickly turned into a crazy chicken lady. Chickens are so entertaining! You can see more info on my profile. I will have to catch up reading everyone's posts.

Welcome, Glad you found us !!

Thank you for welcoming me! I have a cousin who lives in Columbus (no chickens), several siblings who went to Depauw in Greencastle, and I looked up Brookville and New Salisbury on the map to learn their locations.

Knock on wood-- My five hens have never had any health problems (other than my Jersey Giants lash egg, which luckily didn't cause problems.) Does anyone have advice about health maintenance? I have never given them any worm or other parasite treatments. I clean out their litter boxes under the perches everyday (we live in a rural subdivision). I've looked under their wings, etc., but have never noticed any worms, lice, mites although I realize there are microscopic enemies. They have a nice "bath" area with food grade DE, sand, and ashes. Should I regularly be treating them for worms and other parasites? I have read various articles, etc., but there is so much conflicting information. Thanks.

I put 1 Tb apple cider vinegar per gallon of water. I make my own vinegar because I have an orchard but I know everyone says to use the organic kind with the "mother". I start this as soon as they hatch! ACV has so many benefits! I don't pre-treat for anything..I have a poop board under their roost and am able to inspect their poo which can tell you a lot! here a link to pics of poo and what they can tell you : http://chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0 . As far as DE I've heard conflicting things and haven't decided whether to use or not. Heard it's bad for the respiratory system.... Although I want to make a mixture of DE and water to spray my apple trees so I'm thinking they will reap the benefits of it being sprayed all over my property where they will occasionally free range. I know you can't always tell they have mites and that they will burrow under the scales on their legs which can be painful. I debated going "organic" with the chickens like I will be doing with my orchard but I refuse to let my animals suffer and if they get mites or any other unwanted critters I would treat with seven dust 2X...If one has it they all get treated! Well that's all I have for now haha! I look forward to advice others might give too!
