INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Um, yeah, my three are still in the garage cause I haven't put the finishing touches on the tractor, but in my defense, it's cold outside...too cold to paint...at least that's what I'm going to keep telling myself.

I know cannot wait till SPRING!!!! At least it's thawing a bit out today.. I might get to fill up my water troughs outside before the hose freezes over again..

I decided to list my two 9 week old, apparent cockerels in this group first. I know there is a forum specifically for selling and trading, but I want to approach Indiana buyers here so please forgive me for not following protocols. I would prefer not to have to ship the birds and can help deliver within reasonable range. (I am in Indianapolis on north side) Unfortunately, I am not in the position to give them away (unemployed) and would like to have 5.00 obo for each. The father is a beautiful Black Australorp and the mothers are Red Stars. Curiously, the birds are very, very light colored flecked with a few black spots. "Dad" has been a good guardian of his ladies, so my hope it these will do fine with their flocks, too. I will split them up or sell them together. The birds seem healthy and happy and have been in the main coops for 6 weeks along with their 3 siblings. The birds were hatched Dec 21, 2012. (My wife hopes the birds will go to a good home so if you plan on eating them, please do not tell me.)

Let me know if there are any takers. If no one wants them here, then they are bound for Craig's List!

I got my first 2 eggs. Both from my hatchery RIR birds. So my older game chickens from Craigslist are still not laying. These eggs are small and medium. My question is what is the best way to clean the eggs before I use them or eventually store them when I start getting more eggs.

I spoke with a lady at the Indiana Egg Board, and she said slightly warm water is all you need to clean them with. DO NOT soak them as the eggs are porous and once the bloom is cleaned off they will absorb contaminates that may be in the water. I have a small scrub pad made of cloth that I got a Walmart that I use to clean any poop off them while washing them under running water.

Here are some picture of my cabinet incubator. I'm working on the new door with window now and hopefully have it on in a couple days. I didn't have time to make a turner for this so I just bought a couple LG egg turners and altered them to fit the incubator. I had to cut off the last egg tray to fit, but overall don't have any complaints with these turners yet.

I agree. I'm painting the door right now! Each tray has different hatch dates. The top tray is March 7 and lower tray is March 9. I have 13 silkie eggs but only 2 seem to be developing :(. So I have 18 more eggs arriving this week lol. From memory I have silkies, Ameraucana, araucana, LF dark cornish, gold and silver Campine, lavender Orp, Swedish flower hen, BBS and golden cuckoo Marans (only 2 developing from this grup), birchen Marans, and coronation Sussex in the incubator right now. I have salmon faverolle, isbars, Mille fleur leghorns, cream crested legbars, LF chocolate orps and a hens choice assortment also on order. I think I am already addicted!

you are averaging 60 or 6??
lol

They are averaging 60 eggs a week. I average between 8 - 10 eggs a day. They are very consistant in their laying. I got 10 eggs today. I created a fairly detailed spread sheet to track the progress.
They layed 101 in the month of December, 253 in January, and have layed 209 so far for February.I was expecting to average about 30 eggs or a few more a week based on the 3-5 per chicken average. So that is an average of 6 per chicken, weekly average total for 10 chickens 60.

Does the 60 eggs a week seem high? I was told that happy chickens lay. So i figure they must be fairly happy, I know I am.
