INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Chic-farmer, you are cracking me up!!! Told the DH you'd had an opossum and he is making yucky noises, he hates them!!
My husband hates them, too. I used to worry they would bother the chickens but they never did until this one. And he actually wasn't bothering them

just sharing their roost. Who knows what might have happened? Maybe he was a nightly visitor that never caused harm.

If he hadn't been in the chicken house I would have left him alone. I learned a hard lesson years ago when I killed a possum and had baby possums showing up everywhere! I then felt obligated to rescue them.

This one in the picture was the 5th one that showed up to be rescued and taken to a wild-life rehabber. Last night's visitor was about 9 pounds away from being this cute and adorable!

Sorry to hear that vickichicki

If you got your chicks from the tsc on brookview rd you can take it back to them for exchange as long as you still have the receipt and if it hasn't been over a week. I found that out when 1 of mine had passed. But it didn't have pasty butt.

Laughing is good, keeps us young!

In all seriousness though, I would have freaked out. Had one in our garage one year when I was a kid, she nested up against the back of our freezer, where it was warm. My dad found her after opening our freezer and the meat was gone, as in bad. He pulled the freezer out and there she was with her babes. Boy was Dad mad! She was using the wires to nest with along with alot of the insulation I'm guessing. Lost a whole freezer of deer that year, on top of all the beef. Did not end pretty for them either.

Wow! That would have burnt my biscuits, too! We live in the woods, so I do know that we will see a higher than average amount of wildlife (and I love it!). But while I enjoy watching everything from mice, crawling snakes and herds of deer (making my dogs bark all night!) I insist they stay out of my house and the chicken house or they are fair game.

Rather unfair considering they were here first!

I agree, I try to live with them, in peace, Haven't had to kill anything here in 17 years (in the country myself now). I did however forget to mention, that I grew up in the city, middle of South Bend. Hasn't been farm type housing there for years and years. I think she was just lost and had limited time to nest. I felt horrible, but my Dad was very glad he didn't send one of us kids out there. Could have been a lot worse had we gone, her protecting her young and all.

Spent about an hour last night listening to the coyotes come in. I didn't get a look @ them, it was too dark but sounded distinctly like 5 different ones. They've been visiting my back yard about once a week. About 4 months ago, I went on a weekend vacation and someone trespassed and hunted out of my stand, shot a deer, walked past my trail camera, stole the camera, and left the dead deer to rot. I noticed by the smell 3-4 days after I got home. Ticked me off good, as ever since then, the **** coyotes keep coming back. Trying to find somewhere to sell the pelts, cause once my bow is fixed up it's on. Here's a pic from last year before the camera was stolen, **** thing was watching us, the date and time, we were all inn the backyard next to the house, and the gate is about 400' from the door.

Thanks for letting me know Ashley. I am going to wait and shop around before I add anymore, although I would like to add more before this bunch get much older so they integrate better.
Thank you everyone for the kinds words :hugs

I am heading outside now to build my poop board. Going to take lots of pictures and post it in the coop construction thread.
I planned everything out on paper, looks good, cut all the pieces... Fingers crossed.
Although no where on my awesome design did I include the chickens that are going to be in there watching me... Oooh this is going to be fun!

"what'ch doin" :cd

"Can I sit on this while you are using it":cd

:cd "Can we eat this" :cd

Bacon... I heard coyote pelts were actually selling high this year. My neighbour traps for the DNR, I will ask him later if he know where is the best place to sell them. I know he asked my hubby to go hunting with him for them this year.

I HATE OPPOSUMS! I caught one in the run... they can fit between 2x4 welded wire... and then I gave it to the dog! I didn't have my .22 then. After I told my dad about it, he gave me an old .22 he had since he was a kid.
I am addicted so much that Ifollow along no matter how many posts I need to read through to catch up. Hoosiers are very interesting and nice people.

Cluck~ I'm glad they don't cull them. Where do you find the deals on the chicks then?

You find the deals on websites, emails, and if you have them on facebook they sometimes post it on there.

Last I heard it was almost 120-150 a pelt, depending on size and quality. I'm gonna have to look into the landowner trapping law, see if I need a permit to trap. I can't use a firearm, well, anything where the projectile is propelled by gun powder... so it's either trap, or bow and arrow. Although trapping would net the best pelts, but there's also the issue of the carcass. I can't think of anything useful. Maybe coyote jerky... I know they're a "pest" around here, but I hate to kill and not use. Then again, if I can get that price for pelts...new coop here we come.

Caught a possum in a trap a few years ago. I thought that it was acting strange so left it in the trap to have someone look at it--didn't want to relocate it if it was rabid or had distemper. The next day she proudly displayed her new baby possums!

Also had one several years ago who came into the yard every night and shared my collie's food. It was crippled and the dog didn't seem to mind it--must have realized that it couldn't really fend for itself.
