INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm way behind but I wanted to say I also have the ceramic egg cartons. I got the half dozen one at Bed Bath and Beyond (Mishawaka) in their dishes department.

I also have a dozen size one on order from Amazon. Here it is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002DR4982/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It has not arrived yet.

I use them to keep eggs on the counter and set them in such a way that I know which are the oldest and which are the newest. (Sorry so behind!)

I learned about something that I think others here would want to know about this weekend. One of the gals over on the Natural Chicken Keeping Thread was having a problem with a pullet she purchased from a breeder. Several other people she knew that purchased from the same place had illness and death as well.

She had been nursing it (she has rehabbed battery chickens and she has raised chickens for years so she has had success in that area.) After it became obvious that this little one wasn't going to make it, she ended up doing a necropsy and found something she had never seen before.

After a bit of discussion and research, it seems that the symptoms all point to lead poisoning. She is going to send out a sample to a lab for testing to confirm.

I though y'all might want to read a bit on that as I had never considered lead poisoning with chickens before. There are simple things that can be done for prevention and just knowing how devastating it is and that it exists is good.

Here's a link to the photos of the necropsy if you want to look. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...keeping-thread-ots-welcome/9090#post_10628221 If you read the next several pages on the thread there is discussion on causes, prevention, etc. Also a short article written in response to this is here. It covers zinc poisoning as well.

I want to get some also, they look very nice. The paper tray things are boring and ugly lol!
Plan to buy a few of the goose size plastic trays for the weekly collections tho.

Wonderful news! My first goose hatch goes to lockdown the 12th, so nervous and excited! :jumpy
Good luck. I have a friend that wants me to hatch duck eggs for her. From what I have read, waterfowl seem much harder to incubate than chicken eggs. Something I don't want to tackle at his time!

I can't believe how fast the chicks grow. The Wyandots and sebrights ,OEG are still not friendly at all and sooo skiddish. No matter what I do or how much I work with them. The GC,BR and astralorps are super fun and excited to see me and run to my hands as do the free(Roos) BBs. The 2 Millie's that survived are mean! And my favorites so far are the ameraucanas pullets, they are the younges, but even still have been the calmest, sweetest and are happy to be picked up and petted and run to greet me.

I do have one problem. The one we think is a silver sebright is the smallest of the lot. And has started head twitching. Like Parkinson's. I've done some searching thru the health threads but am open to ideas. They all get the probiotic , and electrolytic packets in their water and also a touch of VM. Ideas?

Wow! I would never have thought a chicken could have lead poisoning! This was interesting! Thanks for sharing the info!

I have seen the egg skelters. I have contemplating purchasing one but I think it will take up too much room on the counter. I've also heard folks say that the eggs get in there sideways and don't want to roll down like they're supposed to. One person wrote that they disliked it for that reason and sold it on ebay to get rid of it.

I wish there was a store that carried them somewhere that I could look at one in person and decide!
