INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

i do love getting birds but my dad doesnt lol and if i build a breeding pen can i still let them run around with the others?
If you are trying to breed hen A with Rooster B then hen A can't be free with any other rooster for quite a while. I think many breeders use trios (2 hens and a rooster) in a breading pen to get their quality hatching eggs. It would be awful to hatch eggs and find out that some stray rooster was the dad. Or even worse if you sell hatching eggs and they hatch a chicken that is not what you advertised, you will lose customers.

You are right you can't leave this thread! Very active, which is very cool.

All I can say about you not starting your coop yet, is you better get very busy, very fast! And no, the weather is not warming up yet, at least not in the 10 day forcast.

I know it's just frigid out there...but I have to admit...I worked outside in it yesterday from..oo 3ish til just after dark and as long as I was in the sunshine it was good...

Going on Spring Break and having brother-in-law watch the house/animals so I built a little make shift run since they always free range and he's not quite 17!! HA! Yeah I know!
I just was worried I'd come home to a bunch of dead chickens...atleast this way I know they aren't getting picked off one by one by the hawks while "Mama's" away! LOL

Our coop is about 3 feet off of the ground so I just wrapped 3 sides of the underneath with hardware cloth and extended out the front of the coop with several pallets (covered that with remaining hardware cloth and section of plywood)! Talk about re-purposing some stuff around the place! It's temporary! No offense to any KYians here...O Wait we're in the IN Thread!! LOL...but my brother made fun of me saying I had a regular Ol' makeshift backwoods KY coop!

Hello!!! It's nice to see an active thread from Indiana! I'm a newbie and haven't got any birds yet. I'm still in the planning process of the whole thing. I haven't read through the whole thread; 300+ pages is a lot of reading material. What all is talked about here anyways?
Nice thing about our thread is we talk about whatever we want to! I'm on several others too and some spike up on activity every once in a while but they're pretty breed specific...here it's a community so whatever's going on local or if you find something local you want to share or give a heads up on or if you're looking for something. Give us a shout and someone on here is always willing to help or contribute! Great bunch!

Crafty: Where do I go (link) to make a guess on the Easter Chicks? Does the winner get a prize?

Dana: I had our pond dug to 10' deep and we used the fill to grade our yard as we built the house. I stocked the pond with large mouth bass, bluegill, and catfish 5 years ago. The bass are 5 pounds and the catfish are MONSTERS!

Here are a few more pictures: We have a dog rescue and the dogs love to swim...
