INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Too Fast~ Nice coop!! They look so cute lined up. It seems like we only had to show our chicks how to go up their ladder one time-- it's like they've been bred to go up a ladder to bed. haha At least with the red light, you can make sure it's on instead of worrying, "What if the light goes out?!"

Leah's mom~ Pretty pictures! I looked at your coop/yard photos on your Profile, and it looks like you have a great set up. We all have such lucky hens!

How old is she?

Some folks I know have had those kinds of symptoms ... not sure if your girl has the same thing as their birds did... but theirs was a Thiamin/niacin deficiency. If you feed medicated feed that can make it worse as the medication it it blocks thiamin absorption.

We were discussing something similar to this earlier in this thread but the symptoms were a little different. Here are a few links to those posts:

Some of them had success by getting Poly-vi-sol and putting a little in the drinking water. NOT THE KIND WITH IRON. Just plain. You can usually get it at the regular grocery store in the baby department.

Looks like this:

I want to say it again: YOUR BIRD MAY NOT HAVE THIS! Just wanted to pass on the info and giving some raw liver or Poly-Vi-Sol won't hurt them either way so it may be worth a try!
shes 6 weeks old can i use cod oil?

Did you get "pullets"? A couple of them look like roos......
You better be quiet lol. 2 amber links and 2 NHR are pullets, the leghorns and SLW are straight runs. We are hoping for one of each to be female, not sure what to do if they are roosters. If they are well behaved roosters, they may stay. If not...............how old are they too old to be good for dumplins?

Just checked on them. They are quiet, have moved better to be under the light, but are not on top of each other. Should I try to put them on their roost bars, closer to the heat? Or will they figure it out for themselves. Yes newbie nervousness!

I'm trying to make one out of styrofoam. I am feeling pretty good about tweaking the temp to get it right. I'm just not sure where to place the thermostat. In all that I see it is either lying there or connected to the side of the cooler. In the hard plastic coolers I see screws, but I just don't know how well a screw would work with styrofoam. Plus I've heard putting the silver side closest to the light bulb is best but then the setting of the thermostat is between the thermostat and the wall of the cooler and is impossible to reach. any tips?

Oh, and I'm trying to calibrate my hygrometer, but it just isn't seeming to get above 52%. I'm thinking that it can't be THAT far off. In those tests I've been doing the 1/2 C salt, 1/4 C water. That has left it pretty soupy. From other videos I've watched, it seems that it shouldn't be that soupy. So for this last one I've done (it's currently in the bag, has been there almost three hours) I poured out the extra water. It's up to 56%. Am I doing something wrong or is my hygrometer terrible?!?!?!
