INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

If it is bumble foot it is a staff infection and can infect others if they have an open injury.

But...is it possible that it was frost bite? One of the gals I know had one w/frost bite because it got into the water when it was extremely cold in the winter. She did bring it in and isolate and treat knowing that the toes were going to die and fall off. They did and the bird is now relearning how to get around and doing quite well.

Here's a cc of her post w/some photos:

Refering to the post about bumble foot. I have a hen that might have it but it started in the winter so I thought it could of been frost bite as well. I didnt catch it in time because she is not a tame hen at all. We call her crazy because you cant even get close to her or she will just take off. I think her left foot is a total loss pretty much. Some of her toes look dead and dont even move. I tried to clean them once before but it never helped. She can still walk but with a limp. She is a older hen. I didnt think i could really do much more for it so i just left it alone. I have never came across this before with any of my other birds. If this was bumble foot can the infection cause my other birds to get it?

Leahs Mom: I will have to get some pics for you if i can catch her. Her foot isnt as bad as the pics you posted of Margaret's . But her toes do look like that but not the whole foot. Thats why I thought it was frost bite. Thanks

There was a little bit of sentimentality as right when she was treating for frostbite, they lost their barn to a fire with over 100 chickens, their LGD, and 2 sheep. The chicks she was brooding in the basement were all she had left - and Margaret...who was also in the basement being treated.

I am thinking of getting chicks from tsc

I'd like eggs, so 3 red sex links maybe 4 then I'd like at least one easter egger so I was thinking 3 or 4 mixed bantams.
we have to buy 6 chicks so I have been reading how to pick the chicks on BYC

I would love to get a red old english game bird rooster in banty size. but will live without a rooster as well. Our neighbow raises the roosters for 4-h so maybe I will borrow theirs, lol

sounds like a good idea to borrow a rooster, maybe for a couple of weeks and offer a percentage of the chicks as payment (I know that is done with people whom breed dogs sometimes a little cash too) or just a cash layout.

We've been talking about basic first aid kits over on the natural thread. Thought I'd re-post here hoping it would be helpful to someone. What does everyone else keep in their first aid kits? Here's the link where I first posted: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...eeping-thread-ots-welcome/10830#post_10837819 First Aid Kits: Since the bumble foot incident, I have the following and most of these are inexpensive - you might already have some of them. This is just what I have and probably left some things out! Sharp Scissors - 1 normal size for cutting gauze, etc. and 1 smaller for working on the chicken itself if needed or to remove vet wrap...small enough to slip under the vet wrap and cut it off if it won't "unwind". Exacto Knife

(Got mine at Walmart) Tweezers (flat tip and pointed tip) Cotton Swabs Another good one to add to yours.. Which I have in mine is liquid bandage. I used it on my girls when one got a toe injury. They other had pecked at it, looked gruesome. Took her out and cleaned it good. Applied liquid bandage. Next day she went back in the coop with the others. Good for smaller cuts to cover the wound, without having something visual to draw them to. Vet Wrap (farm store or on line...cheaper at farm store as no shipping $1.99 each!) Comes in all colors and even some cute designs. It's 3" wide so I cut it in 3 strips to make it thinner. You can see a photo here that shows how I cut it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...eeping-thread-ots-welcome/10760#post_10829288 Cotton Gauze Squares (regular drug store) Epsom Salts NuStock

(This stuff is amazing. It is anti-fungal and anti-biotic. Been used by farmers for years. Can be put around/on the vent to help cure vent gleet, kill nits of lice/mites, etc.) I couldn't find it locally, had to order on line. There are lots of testimonies on this thread and on the natural chicken keeping blog on uses for this stuff. I had never heard of it until here! Triple anti-biotic Ointment (or a veterinary equivalent) Icthammel ointment (Got mine at the local TSC) Bag Balm (Farm store or drug store) Alcohol _________________________ Other stuff I have that is not very basic: Biopsy Punches in various sizes (4mm, 6mm, 8mm). Got these when I had the bumble foot and just got some extra to keep in the kit. A small Curette. Also got this on vetmed where I got the biopsy punches. Saline Solution and a squirt bottle to use on bumble foot surgery. (had to order from Grainger Supply and picked it up at the local Grainger when it came in. ) The squirt bottle I got at the local store (kind of like a ketchup container...found it in the cosmetic department.) Squeeze bottle looks like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Squeeze-Condiment-Open-Tip-Screw-On-Polyethylene/dp/B000HOCFPW

Leahs Mom: This is Crazy and pics of her feet. She is one of my older Ameraucana hens. What I thought happened was we noticed her limping some one day and thought she her her foot. Well then after bout a week it looked like she started walking better. Then we got another snow storm and she went out in it. The a few days later that's when I noticed she was limping again and her toes were turning black. So I thought maybe it was frostbite. Mind you she is a flyer and a crazy chicken hence the her name Crazy. Well my theory was she landed on it wrong and hurt it and maybe lost some feeling in it then she went out in snow and couldn't feel the cold on her foot and it ended up getting frostbite.

Top of foot you can see swelling.

Bottom foot her feet are kinda dirty today. but that is her black toes as well. You can see swelling as well.
