animallover~ Could a member of the poultry workshop you attended help? Is that the same group as 4-H that you've mentioned being involved in before? It seems like you'd really need someone to hold her. Is Mr. doing better?

i could ask the poultry leader if she can help and Mr. Frizz is doing much better just need to make him nicer and not bit me lol

Hi! We are alittle late to order, but were in the middle of a move. Does anyone know of chicks for sale in indiana? Really looking for Araucanas or Americunas but would settle for some Easter Eggers or any more friendly breed. This is our first chicken adventure so very excited!!!

Martinsville rural king has Easter Eggers, or check your local one or TSC.. if you decide to venture let me know, been wanting a few more but they require 6 min so I'd go in with you if you don't want that many!

Awe great story thanks for sharing and welcome to IN BYC! I have both silkies and bantam cochins, if you have an incubator I have fertile eggs from my Frizzle to smooth Cochin, otherwise I have to wait in hopes she goes broody, I'm dying to hatch some of their babies, just wonderful breed!

Whereabouts are you located? I should have an incubator ready to go by next weekend.

im nervous on doing my first surgery on anything but im confident i can do it well see how it goes tomorrow i might take pic while i do it im doing her bumble foot first and then her infected toe once her foot heals

I've read a lot of contradicting info and finally thought, why not ask people from my area!
When is a good age to put my chicks in their coop? We have 3-4 weekers now that we are raising inside. I live south of Bloomington if that helps.

We were scared about puttiing our chickens into the coop. They were then 4.5 weeks old, and the temperature overnite the first few nights was about 35.
Since then it has warmed up a lot obviously, and now we are not using a heat lamp like we were the first 10 days. So I say wait until your chicks are at least 5
weeks old, and then have a heat lamp until the overnight temps are a minumum of 50.

animallover~ I'm sure you will do well! That's a great idea to ask the poultry leader to help. If she can't help tomorrow, it doesn't have to be tomorrow, does it? If it were me, I would definitely want someone to hold Ms. May and an experienced person is always good. I didn't realize that Ms. had both an infected toe and foot. Is Mr. Frizz over his fungus problem? I guess he's grouchy from his health and from relocating. I'm sure when he is feeling better he will express his appreciation. haha That's also a good idea to take photos! It documents your experience, and it could help others dealing with ailing chickens. : - )

So, what age should I take my girls and possible boys outside to play? I'm not ready to MOVE them out yet! RIR are almost 4 weeks, Barred Rocks are almost 5 weeks. Weather in S. Indiana is BEAUTIFUL but don't want to take them out before they are ready.

I found this photo of my chicks at two weeks old. We took them out for a while each day, depending on the weather. Even though they were under the tractor, we made sure to watch them. Sometimes I got under the tractor with them to play with them. We put a broomstick across for a perch, a quilt over part of it for shade, and food and water.

Hello! My family got our first six chicks about a month ago and are getting ready to build our first coop. In the meantime, our little chicks are living in a very large dog crate under the heat lamp in our basement. We live in Greencastle.

UPDATE

I called the Vigo County Building Inspectors Office today and asked questions inquiring about having pet chickens. I was sent to the area planning office. Talked to one of the men there and he looked up my address and said we could have them. He said the limit is 6. When I told him we were doing this as a HOMESCHOOL project he said he didn't see a problem with us having 6-10 chickens.

Considering we have 3 properties, looks like we can keep all 24 of our chicks.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to fight. I made myself sick worrying about having to give away my girls. I woke up this morning in fight mode and got the job done.
