Hello fellow Hoosiers
I am a relatively new chicken keeper but have a nice sized flock in Hamilton County. Miss Daisy is a Golden Laced Wynadotte and Kanako is an Easter Egger. These are my one year old ladies. This year I have added a group of five that are already moved out to the coop as they escaped and tried to ruin the kitchen. Amelia Bedelia is a Buff Orpington, Haley is an Easter Egger, Emma is a Golden Laced Wynadotte, Ebony is a Black Australorp, and Lucy is a Rhode Island Red. I got two new babies over the weekend due to a minor bout of planned insanity. I look forward to coming up with names for and adding my Cream Legbars to my little flock. I am mostly in this for the eggs but the entertainment is good too. All girls so no babies to come, and I like it that way.

I have enjoyed reading all the posts, and I appreciate the shared experience as I have gained valuable information for my girls.

They have all eaten, they have all explored, only about 1/2 of them went outside.
***Here is the BIG question... What do you do if they DON'T want to go back in once it is dark???***
Should I heard them back in or just wait them out???

Awesome job on the coop! I usually have to heard them in at first. They will get the idea soon.

Do you have any 4 week pictures of your BCMs?
Not sure what you're looking for but here are a few pics of some babes in their first week, some pullets approx 4 weeks and a roo at 4 weeks. If there's something specific you're wondering about ... ask away.. BTW these are not the same chicks as they progressed in age; they are 2 different sets. My sweet boy may he RIP was killed by a neighborhood dog at approx 3 months old. My boy now that I have posted pics of in the past is from the first pic of chicks just below. He too is wonderful, very sweet, follows me around like a puppy! lol

Jchny~ you should post a pic of Stanley on one of his fat days!
Oh my I will, he is at least 2X of the hens! What a chubber!

Another Question!!! I feel like a first time mom again.

Today is the first day in the new coop, and I had to go out and put the girls back into the coop. They really were comfy all in a chicken pile in the run. Will they explore the roosting bars on their own, or do I need to put them up there for the first time? Right now they are in the coop on the bedding all snuggled up in a nice warm little chicken pile.
LOL, they will figure it out in no time.Put the smartest one up, and the rest will try it when they feel they are ready

ok my fellow BYCers, need some advice. My first flock is now 8 weeks old approximately. I have two silver laced wyandottes which i am unsure of the sexes yet. i do know that their wattles seemed to grow in first. as of yet neither one of them have started crowing. any thooughts on what they might be? this is my first season as a chicken owner and not sure. wish i would have taken better pictures. combs are ruby red.

Does any one here breed bantams? If so, what breed? My 11 year old daughter would love to get some NEXT year, after we move to a bigger place. She is LOVING the whole chicken experience and would like to raise and care for a coop full of bantams on her own (she is thinking about maybe 5-10 different breeds of bantams).

Crazy busy day, been doing a lot of fencing, and setups for my geese and ducks closer to the pond. Will have to get a few pics, but am really pleased to finally get them back there next to it. Little more of a walk in the winter, but it sure will be better for them, and away from the chickens. The geese were terrorizing Bo, I think they thought he was a dog, not a goat! Now they are a few hundred feet away from him. Have a bantam coop to build, and an enclosure for my turkeys. then I am DONE!!!!
