We bought straight BPR pullets...2 are not BPR answer only have be possible pullet of the other 4 and they are only 4-6weeks so "she" may be a he too! One mystery chick is definitely a roo too!
Does anyone have sexing tips for RIR? They are about 4 weeks.
The other 15 chicks are under 2 weeks, with most barely hitting a week! With 3 dogs, a cat, the neighbors 20 something cats, and my 2 kids...it gets a little crazy around here! Isn't this fun guys!!!!

Hi guys! I just found this thread! I am from Frankfort, IN. I'm sorry to hear about all these dog attacks! I run an animal rescue, and I know how mean those bully breeds, and GSD/Dobermans can be! I have a problem with loose dogs too, so I bought a 5' fence to install this week so my new chickies won't get eaten

Also, since I got into chickens, I've noticed how a lot of people just don't seem to care about them and let them get hurt/sick/die because "they're just chickens" I know a lot are raised for food, but still. Their life is still important! They still deserve respect and love even if they are destined to be food! So I rescued some from my local RK (who I am just about fed up with) and one's vent is almost entirely gone. But, enough of my ranting.

I've decided to add chickens to my rescue! It will be a couple weeks before my coop/run are built (all my chickens are still babies!) but after that I will be up and running! I will be able to take in all the hurt/unwanted chickens, and then (possibly) find them loving NON FOOD homes if it get overrun with chickens!

Also, I am a small dog rescue ONLY (with all the dogs being kept inside the house except for potty or exercise) and never unattended outside!

Well with my RIR's it was really obvious early on.




He had a notable comb at 2 weeks. (Think the photo is around 4+ weeks) In the first photo he is the one on the right with the pinky/red comb poping over his head. He also spent more time growing a comb than feathers. They are all the same age. He was smaller and developed really slow compared to the girls.




This is around 6-8 weeks. His comb was huge and bright. The girls still had yellowish combs at this stage.

Welcome to the thread. Glad you found us!

There can be some neglectful owners of chickens and chicks. With the awesome 'chick days' I see alot of chicks being purchased at a spur of the moment without the long term plans of what will happen to them after they loose that downey cuteness. However chick days can be great for people who love chickens. Means I can increase my flock without the worry of having them shipped from a hatchery and loosing half of them in transit.

Some people choose to eat the chickens they have for several reasons. Alot of times it is the knowledge of what that chicken had eaten during its life and how it was treated before it got to the freezer. I can guarantee anyone on this thread, regardless of the outcome for their chicken, respects its life. Whether they are for eggs, meat or just a family pet.

If you have any questions about building your coops or the chickens in general.. just ask. Friendly bunch on this thread who will endeavor to answer the questions for you. If we don't have the answers we generally know where we can point you too.

I think this is a hen its from the same batch

I didn't see if this was answered or not (still catching up on 3 pages of posts), but these are both Easter-eggers, not Araucanas. They are both cockerels. The first one, I base this conclusion on the patchy red coloring coming in on him. This is characteristic of Easter-egger cockerels; the pullets would have a much more even, spread out pattern. The second one--well, at 6 weeks old, Easter-egger pullets shouldn't have much of any comb. Mine, at 2 years old, don't even have as big of a comb as that second bird.

Haven't been on much lately, but I wanted to welcome all the new people!!!! My computer is to old and slow to go back through all the messages I've missed.

does anyone have an Ancona duck drake for sale. We have one lone crested Ancona hen and would like a boyfriend for her?? I would like another hen also, but would be happy with just a drake. Can buy outright or trade for something I have.

And to everyone having too many roos, we feel lucky now.  Of our 4 'pullets' we got from TSC, one is definitely a boy.  Of the 3 straight run from them, only one is a boy.  If they are all nice and don't crow too much, they can stay.  Otherwise, off to the freezer camp they go.  No crowing going on here for hours on end!

Lucky. 8 years of raising chickens, only one straight run chick we've ever bought has been female. I've stopped bothering with straight run unless I want roosters. We did have one 'lucky' girl that was in a batch of birds that were supposed to be roosters (well, okay, long story short, someone tried to screw us on our first chickens by giving us as many cockerels as they could).

HELP HELP HELP!!!

I just went to play with the our 3 hens and found worms in someones poo!!!! I'm freaking out!!!! I've only had them for just over 2 wks.
What worming medicine should I use??
And is there something I should be giving them to prevent this???
What causes worms in chickens and should I throw out all the eggs???

I appreciate all help!!!

I use Ivormectin pour-on. Dosage is 1/2 mL dropped on the skin of large fowl birds, 1/4 mL for bantams. Your eggs should be fine for now, but after dosing, there's a withdrawal of 10 days on the eggs.
