INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So we introduced our 3 LF 6 week old girls into the coop 4 days ago. Our 9 and 10 week old chickens (bantam and LF) don't want to have anything to do with them. At first they picked on them, but that has cooled down to the occasional fly by peck. The three girls just stick to themselves and the 6 others stay to their little flock. Will they ever blend and bond with each other?

Also I wanted to put my two 4 month old silkies with everyone else since they are all so young still, but Booker (my silkie cockerel) is a little older and I think he would start bickering with my younger cockerels. I only want to put them together because the silkies are still in my house. I want them outside. I was afraid of them getting hurt. I was concerned about vaulted skulls and getting pecked. Im not sure if they have that or not but I didnt want to risk it. I wont be keeping all of my chickens, but I only have 1 coop and they all need to be outside. I am waiting a few more weeks to see what sex all of my chickens are before rehoming.

Any advice?

I'm having the same problem. Only mine are trying to hurt eachother. My white leghorn is trying to kill my black australorp. I think he's racist.

Beautiful showgirls! Love the kitty as well.

Thank you, I sold the 2 smaller showgirls tonight but I have mixed feelings about selling the lighter colored one now, I really wanted to keep it but I also need to rehome a bunch of my chicks, I have 22 with 15 more in the bator. I still have my older showgirl and who knows what will hatch. The cat is my baby, he is an exotic short hair.

HELP!!!!
It has happened again. Some heartless so and so has dropped a litter of 8-10 week old puppies at the bottom of our property. Cungr has found 3, two girls one boy. They appear to be Shepherd/ lab mixes. All different variations on the same mix. If you know anyone who would like one of these babies please contact me ASAP. Otherwise they will have to go to animal control Tuesday. We live 10 min from Corydon Indiana and 45 min from Louisville Kentucky. Little boy

So heartless! How can anyone dump a puppy, let alone a litter out like that, it just rips my heart out. I will ask everyone I know if anyone has room.

Wow, been busy here. Finally read through the last couple days. Our cat finally had her kittens. 4 cute little fuzzies. We already have homes set up for them. It was odd, she wanted me with her the whole time. This is the first time a cat has cried for me to pet them while having kittens. She's doing well. We aren't supposed to have animals in the house (landlord), but I've got her set up on the back porch that's fully enclosed with windows.
Anyway, back to chickens... mine hate me for staying in d/t the rain. I got chicken rushed every time I checked on them. The young ones have been doing well free ranging. So glad they don't travel like my big girls and roo. Yesterday a car pulled in the drive way. I looked out and they were pointing at our far barn. The big girls and roo were foraging pretty far. So pretty though. The B.O. color against the dark green grass. I opened a window and yelled " come on girls!" And they waddled as fast as they could for treats. I bet it blew their minds to see someone call chickens like a dog and them listen. So happy I don't have to round them up and chase them like a fool when it's time to go in. I have them trained to "go home" at any time of the day. Seriously looking into buying a house with about 4 acres not too far from us. We would have more room, and able to do as we please as far as animals go.
Ok, done putting my 2 cents in.... well one more....
We don't trust our dog loose with the chickens... maybe someday we will, but she seems too hyper just a year old, she's a mix mutt. Half pit, and other half is lab, terrier.. and whatever else. I don't want to risk my chickens :)

. Found this this morning in the Millie nest! Somebody's got some explaining to do!!
I had a couple of tiny eggs like that a few weeks back. I still don't know what caused it.
I am watching the bird I refer to as derp consider knocking three of the others off of the perch. Those three are already asleep and if derp jumps up he will twist the Branch like he always does and dump everyone off. I keep referring to them all as boys, I guess that is to keep from being disappointed if I get a large number of roos.

I gave them some dandelions out of the yard yesterday I am thinking of bringing in some grass clippings Monday after I mow to supplement their bedding. they keep trying to eat the shredded paper so I thought maybe I should give them edible bedding. If the weather warms back up I might just take the whole crate out and let them hang out there for a while while I scrub off the tray.
Shredded paper is messy if you are doing deep litter. We tried it, even doing a mix for a while and just gave up. When wet it sticks to everything, the birds feet the roosts, the nests, everything. I recommend pine chips.
Quote: I would love that.
Quote: around here puppies are worth money. I'm sure you could get at least $15, maybe even $50 on craigslist for each one.

cdgualtieri~ It was good to have you back, but so sorry to hear about your dog killing two of your chickens! Several members gave great advice. German Shepherds and Labs are both wonderful, intelligent breeds, so hopefully your mix can be trained. Keep us posted! : - )

Momma2Silkies~ What breed is your cutie, Mack the cat? I didn't see him listed on your signature.

mememe~ Sweet lamb! vickichicki~ I think a lamb in the kitchen would be handy. I'm surprised you didn't comment on my "squirrel on the bed" photo! haha Also, thank you for offering to help with the map project that StelleKitten from Texas told us about. I will get back to you. As far as my idea about the highlighting the counties we're from, it would be great if it could be added to our signatures, but photos can't be added. I haven't even discussed it with jchny yet since the idea was just floating around in my head.

Idymelissande~ I used a little HandiTak removable adhesive to keep perches steady when I had chicks. I just made sure there wasn't any Tak visible so the chicks wouldn't peck at it. I feel for you guys in the northern part of the state. Summer is just around the corner!

My hens were bummed about the rainy day:

My kitten is an exotic short hair persian. I haven't had him very long and I never even thought about adding him until you posted asking about him. I love him to death.
