Wonderful news! AL, have you considered selling eggs
wink.png
that's all part of the fun!
Animal Lover~ Congratulations on your new business!! Just an idea since you live in Buck Creek, how about "Cluck Creek Eggs" or "Pass the Buck Creek Eggs!" (Not sure if you are familiar with the term "pass the buck.") If you would like an egg label or sign made in any style you'd envision, I'd be happy to help a young high school entrepreneur out. Just PM me. Here is the label I use (Since I don't get many eggs, I just give extras to neighbors or friends).

I really need to stay off eBay! Just won an auction for silkie eggs from a lady who just so happens to be a fellow Hoosier! And to top it all off, she is only one county over and I'm able to pick up the eggs! I'm loving the pictures of her birds she posted, and got a great deal, $24 for 18 eggs plus what's laid tomorrow!

Indiana County Map for instant member location
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar and on vickichicki's, I will be happy to provide one. Just PM me. I've mentioned this in a recent post that it would be helpful if members, if they wished, used a little map icon with their county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. When I read posts, many times I think "Now where are they from?" I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they're from.

As I said before, I wish the little map icon could be placed under the member's icon below the last line where it shows if someone is online or offline. I doubt that would be approved by the BYC people. The next best choice is placing it as photo album icon like jchny's "My Flocks." At least if someone clicked on the map, it would enlarge. I cannot find the directions on how to add a photo album icon, (if anyone knows, please let me know). If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal, I can put that together for you, just PM me.

BYC Indiana Google Map for detailed information
Cluck set up a cool Indiana BYC Google map: Hello you have seen the previous post about BYC members on Google Maps. Well I have made 1 for just us INDIANA BYC'ers. All you have to do is go to this link....http://goo.gl/maps/UShV6 . Here are the directions. You will see the state of Indiana.. Zoom in to where you live and then click on the red button that says Edit. After you click Edit you will see a hand, blue pin point and a zig zag line on the map. Click the pin point and drag it to where you live on the map. After you have placed your pin point then click on it and you can edit your decription by adding your county. If you want to change your blue pin point to another icon or upload your own then up on the right of that box click the pin point icon and choose others or upload your own icon. If anyone has problems with this feel free to ask.

You need to go to Chicken Hoarders Anonymous! haha just kidding. Must be nice to have so much room. Btw, I thought the prize for guessing your mystery chick's breed (even half the breed) is a coop like your mega apartment coop that you will build on-site. It's sunny today, so I look forward to seeing you soon!

I love your egg label! :love I'd need a really big carton if I had a label with all of my hens on it.

No kidding! I'm lucky I'm still single at this point and get everything I want know before I'm told I can't lol. I love building things! If I'm ever in the area, I'd be happy to help you build a coop. I actually am going to be building some breeder coops and runs off my main coop. I'm going to run them in a series all connected. It's going to run parallel to the main coop about 5' away. I'm going to extend the roof of the main coop over this 5' walkway but also over the breeder pens. This way I can be sheltered from weather when working out there, but also drive the mower with dump cart through as I shovel out the old bedding. Trying to make it as easy as possible lol. Coops are going to be about 4x5 or 5x5 for a trio or quad with a pen of 5x12 with them having access under the coop for shade. I'm still debating if I want to use pallets or just build it the "traditional" way. Obviously pallets are free, but almost seem like more work to make them work.

COOP QUESTIONS

Quinstar posted: Wow, thanks for the info! I was originally thinking of making the coop 8'x5', but I guess it wouldn't hurt to add a few feet to that. Leave some room for growth! Does vertical height play into this at all? The plan was to have 2 almost full size doors open into the coop and a full size door open into the run. I want it to be a walk in run. What is a poop board that slides out? Would this work if we are planning on doing deep bedding?
We definitely thought about modifying something rather than building from scratch. The nice thing so far is that I've gotten a lot of the materials for either dirt cheap or free. We've gotten almost all the plywood/OSB that we'll need for free. I found some old cedar fence boards on craigslist to do the siding for dirt cheap. We have a couple of packs of shingles laying around that we can use for the roof. I like to think the DH and I are pretty handy. We actually made our own wood floors out of plywood in the house that we moving into.

It's great to be able to walk in the coop! In the morning, mine like to fly down from the coop part to the bottom of the door to go outside (instead of walking down the steps), so I'm glad there's enough vertical room because of the walk-in area. I have a tray (instead of a flat board) that slides out. I have two cat litter boxes that fit in the tray. (I only have five hens, so a poop board might be better for bigger flocks). The litter boxes catch the poop from the chickens being on the perches at night. I put pine shavings in the litter boxes as well as the nesting boxes. It's good to keep the coop (boxed area) clean since that's their egg laying area. The floor of my structure is mostly dirt and a few rocks and sand. They have a dust bath area in one part. (you can look at my coop photos on my profile if you are interested).

It personally doesn't matter to me if someone builds a new coop or uses an existing structure. Since you and your DH are handy and have materials, you are a step ahead! (And leave it to vickichicki, a CARPENTER, to say, "Never be daunted by a project." hahaha Make sure to get Victoria's cell phone number!)

I sent a pm, but if you post how to make the map, I will make it myself. I might have missed it, if you already posted instructions. I'm in the same spot you are. I have to google most all of the locations. Crazy as I should know my way around.
