thanks CRselvey.  I have a ton of scrap stuff to make a tractor with, I forgot I can get one set up that would work great for summer and then make the snow proof one while using the other.  It doesn't have to be rated to 40 below when its 80 outside.

Also if I don't move them out my son may get more tail feathers for his collection.  He got 3 on mothers day, 4 year olds don't always understand how to pet the chickens.

That's funny! I have a three year old and a five year old that I have to watch carefully. Not sure how the chicks have lived thru them this long.

I was walking home today from work, and there was a baby bird in the middle of a highway! I scooped it up, but I couldn't find any trees or nests or anything. It was right outside my house, so I brought him in, but now looking at him, I think he's a fledgeling. What do you guys think?


I certainly don't want to keep him in if he's already supposed to be out of the nest! But I couldn't leave him to die on the road so...If he's big enough I'll go put him out near where I found him but well away from the road!

EDIT: I researched more and it said a fledgling has all feathers, he didn't have all of them but most. So I sat outside a while and watched the birds. I saw some that I think are starlings going to a light pole clost to where he was in the road. So I put him under that. He squaks loud enough, I'm sure they'll hear him.

Starlings. You should have done us a favor and run him over. These are an invasive bird brought over in the 1890s to have Shakespeare's birds around the USA. They take over native bird nests, from what I remember. Not good for N. America. I know it's a baby bird and all, but if it really was a starling, check out some history about them and how they live.

I took your advice and I looked them up. I know that a lot of people don't like them, but have always been usure why.
Here's what I found out:
*They're tough birds, adaptable, and are commonly believed to push other birds out of the area and sometimes take over nests
*They congregate in large flocks, and leave behind a mess of poop
*The can spread disease between livestock
So, in a nut shell, they're pushy and adaptable and don't care about other species. They like to surround themselves with more of their species/breed, and they leave their crap just lying around...They sound like humans! And no, I'm not going to kill it because it's like that, and I wouldn't kill it if it was an adult either. Every life is worth something, and all creatures deserve respect.

Agreed. Starlings are a pestilence. I discourage/kill all I can. Nasty birds.

But out of respect for Shawna, I take that back.

I told you guys she's a kind hearted soul. I'll bet she catches mosquitoes and releases them outside.

As much as I am a bird lover (and a major softie), I agree with Too Fast and Old Salt. Starlings are nasty buggers. :/ I respect your viewpoint on the value of life, ShawnaScott, but I'm seeing more starlings and less of the beautiful native birds that belong around here, and I don't like it.

Greetings all!

I think it has been two weeks or so since I made an appearance on here. I have been slowly digging through the old posts as often as possible, work has been really heavy and pushing my to my limits.
Really hope things slow down soon so I can really catch up on everything properly. On that note....

Momma turkey has gone broody and is sitting on last time I counted, four eggs. So much for selling more eggs . However I am dead excited to see how all this broody works.
So I guess in a few more weeks I will hopefully be offering up four royal turkey chicks if anyone is interested. I guess shoot me a PM.
I am also going to be offering up the adults after she has finished hatching these eggs.
We decided that the room would be better spent for our chickens. That and the sanity of our neighbours from his gobbling.
The Tom is a bit of a grouch, but with room I think he will be ok. She is timid. I have pictures if anyone is interested in those, yet again, shoot me a PM.

I wanted to give eveyone on the Indiana thread first refusals before I seek other avenues for their sale.

Have been out of the loop for weeks! Still have about 30 pages left to read until I'm caught up! We are still at 32 chicks. Anyone have Cornish or Cornish cross chickens? My kids HAD to have these 2 yellow chicks....at 3-4 weeks, they are the size of my 6-7 week RIR. Only a couple of weeks until number house is taken back! Love all Tue chicken pictures! I've gone a little chicken crazy and the family are nothing but enablers! I have chicken cookie jars, plates , and knock knacks from them! Not to mention the clucking message tone on my phone! Have missed this site!
