Hey------------it's y'all ha ha. Glad you understood my (sometimes sad) attempt humor. Too bad about the mink attack.

They liked the run so much I found the biggest problem with it. How to get them out of it? I was on my own this afternoon and it was a bit difficult to get them back in the crate.

Ive been using my cat's crate/carrier to get 3 at a time. We only have six, so it doesn't take too long, but its better than one at a time. Cute chicks!

Another coop question.... can I use treated lumber, or do I need to get untreated?

@Pip I want to squeeze your chicks! I wish mine were still that fluffy!

I'm not from Greenwood, but very close over near Mooresville. I hope you folks are successful at getting some change to happen. It is always a positive to have more 'chikin folk' around. Especially when you're that close!
Good afternoon! Thank you for your reply. The lady we got our coop from is actually in Mooresville. Sadly, the city made her get rid of her chickens too (which is how we ended up with it). They did a great job building it, must've weighed 500lbs. Its going to stay in my back yard weather it has chickens in it or not! We have two other people in Greenwood reply to my thread in the Laws and Oridence subfourm. That's a start! Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Quote: Wonderful news Animallover, just remember gentle, no jars or bumps. Sally made very good points all around.
Sally how long was power out?

sending good luck to you.

I think it was out about 5 -6 hours. I know it was out at least 3.
I put them in lockdown about 30 minutes ago. All of the ones I candled had movement so it was not as bad as I thought. I did have 3 that I previously marked as ? that I removed. They had barely started so made it past the 7 day pull but then they stopped. I did not open them but I could see there was no real chick mass inside. Since it looks like they stopped around the time I candled them, it makes me cautious to handle the eggs any more than need be. Now I wait.
if the egg is pourse will it still hatch???
My last hatch I had some that looked very porous under the light and the chick came out fine.
I have a question for anyone, everyone-- How many biosecurity measures do you use? I read about everyone swapping chickens and other animals. Do you use only certain boots in your chicken area (and different ones at the feed store, poultry shows, other chicken people property)? Use a bleach foot bath for visitors? I haven't read anything about disease plaguing (only predators :( ) in this group but I have only been a member for a short time.
I have shoes that are my messy outdoor shoes. I take them off as soon as I enter my house in the shoe removal area. I have shoes that are my indoor shoes and then I have the different pairs of shoes that are for whatever occasion outside of the house like shopping, church, taking the kids to the park, ... I do not have special shoes for TSC. I have been there in dressy church shoes as well as tennis shoes, but never my chicken shoes. I only use my chicken shoes for the places I might step in chicken poo or high mud. So the shoe thing is more because i don't want stuff tracked through my house than any worry about a bird. And because a long time a go a coworker was sscolding his sone for touching the bottom of his shoe and rubbing spit into the soles ( children think of the strangest things) but the dad was all don't you know where you shoes have been. He then listed off a lot of places including the public restrooms. While this man was a touch OCD it got me thinking, so now we have inside shoes, have for way before the chickens came to our property.
When we get new chicks or adult birds I do separate them and use a sacrificial bird test. So far I have not gotten any sick sacrificial birds but I have lost some chicks in the isolation time.
I don't care for bleach and there is no way I would ask someone to wash with it. I do ask people to wash (soap and water or a wipe) their hands before touching a chicken and after too as many people forget how often they touch their face and such. Plus most of the people looking at our chickens are family with little ones. They are used to the hand washing but I make sure they know it is not like the 10 second rule.

Another coop question.... can I use treated lumber, or do I need to get untreated?

@Pip I want to squeeze your chicks! I wish mine were still that fluffy!
If you use untreated be on the look out for large black bees that eat holes into the wood. They should not sting you but they are loud. Treated tends to be heavy if you are thinking of a tractor.

Fortunately, my Labrador Retriever marked the area several times today. I may have contributed. I am told that will deter coyotes. Kinda icky, but I am told, effective.

I run my dogs along the fenceline to place their marks too. But unlike you, so far my husband is uncooperative. I guess I could do it, but doubt I could get away with it discretely...lol.
