INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I hope this is allowed on this thread..

I'm looking for a few more pullets either marans or gold laced wyantdottes. Does anyone in the central/east central Indy area have any for sale? I'm just looking to round out my little flock. Thanks!
You could PM jchny2000 (Janet) who lives in the Indy area re GLW.

Rangi, my little Ancona chick, is reaching new heights...

OlliePollie-- You're allowed to chicken trade on this thread.

Pipd-- You're not allowed to show any enticing baby chick photos!
The wooden eggs are sitting in a nesting box, thanks to you. How long until I can determine if a hen is not going to "go broody"? Do they decide to sit on them soon-- or do they wait a week-- or does it just depend?

I like the idea of a get together, whether learning processing or just socializing. But I have this really bizarre image of processing chickens while eating finger foods!

Seriously, though, it sounds like a great time as well as informative..

There were Chickenstocks held for a couple of years, just get togethers with food, fun, poultry swapping, etc. The last one that we tried to have didn't happen--too many variables interfered, the major one being that our pregnant hostess got put on restricted activity!

I'm all for whatever we can do and willing to help wherever I can.

Aww, then I suppose I shouldn't post this picture of Tiwhiri giving me a cutie face?

I'm not totally sure about the broodies, because I've never actually tried to get a bird to go broody. They will if they will. :idunno It depends a lot on the breed, and many hatchery / production breeds have had the broody urge bred out of them. My most broody girls are my Sebrights and my Wyandottes.

I am thinking a pitch in would be good too, finger food stuff. This will be a hands on thing, so everyone gets a chance to try it themselves.
I have processed on a few occasions, all were cornish cross so far. My latest processing was my hog, done entirely at home. Also have hunted rabbit, deer, squirrel..My big job coming up are the BBW turkeys. They would be easier to see the process than a chicken. (basically the same jut way BIGGER

) Shout out, or PM me.. If I see there's enough interest I can start offering up some dates.

jchny~ I'm glad you said dates, as in plural, because you'll need to host two events: one like you discussed and one for Chicken Pet owners like me who would be traumatized by such a picnic. "Not that there's anything wrong with natural farming," but you wouldn't want some of us sheltered types who didn't grow up farming to come to your event and become a hysterical mob. -- I'm just giving you a hard time! : - ) I can hear you saying, "Why don't you host the Chicken as Pets get-together?"

You flatter me, sir.

I only know what has worked for me, but if you could put that in writing for my husband and kids I would appreciate it!

And yes, I am a girl and therefore very jealous of your ability to discretely mark territory.

I don't know about numbers x size for quail. Some people keep them in breeding trios, but I prefer groups. They can be vicious to each other
and territorial. The cage I just built was 7' x 3' and just 10" tall and houses 11 quail. My reasons for building that size was that I had a piece of leftover 1/4" hardware cloth that size to use as a bottom. ( I really hate cutting hardware cloth) The pen is working great with no bullying going on.

There is a quail forum on here, so I would advise checking there for info.

I have 3 daughters; all of them handy. The youngest, given the materials, could build a house, framing, wiring, plumbing, the works and she's trim and beautiful as are her sisters. The eldest could repaint and completely decorate it. The mid-kid could, but has a husband who wouldn't allow her to do the hard work. He would do it. Girl power!

So, chickie, tell your bunch to get out of the way and let Mom do it. She knows what she's doing youse guys just get in the way of a doer.

The quail pen I actually built 30+ years ago consisted of 2x10's standing on edge and nailed together to form a 4-sided pen on the ground. I attached 2" chicken wire over the top to keep them from flying away. The 2" wire was cheaper and they couldn't fly up, turn upside down to grab the wire and then twist up to scoot through the 2" holes. This worked real well until it snowed and a drift in the pen allowed them to walk up the snow to the wire, squeeze through and head for the hills. I don't recall how many I had, probably on the order of 50. Never got to eat a one of them, but the local varmints were very appreciative of my efforts. I liked the quail, but I don't think I will be doing a repeat performance with quail.

The guineas are as far into the wild side as I think I'll be going this time around.

I captured some and took them to the extension office and they told me what they were and what to do. They said to try miracle coat No Fly Zone it is for horses but it is working so far. My younger chicks have bites on them, my turkeys have bites on them too. But everyone is getting better better now.
Aww, glad to hear it! Good idea to take them in to identify!

If you are interested in the wyandottes, send me a message I offer pullet chicks after 4 weeks old, I can tell pretty well by then what they are.
On the bottom of my post, you can also click on the member page, and see if someone is closer to you, I am between Ingalls and Pendleton.

Then there are 2 blue gray that I think are silkies, at least they have more toes. And a little white-cream one that might be Cochin?

I have NEVER asked it the 10 years we have been here to use it, but supposedly we can... It has restrooms, a lovely lake and lots of room to picnic and enjoy the area.
