Phew, we bought 30 cinderblocks and hauled them home today. Gonna start working on the coop expansion as soon as we get some better weather!

Ugh, i am tired! Made the trip to littleameraucanamom's flock and picked up chicks and eggs. All I can say is if you are wanting a breed that she has, you can not go wrong with her stock. They are beautiful! Just seeing one of her cochin hens made me take a chick home. If I had more room for breeding, Would have bought more than just the one. They are impressive! But then so are her buckeyes, silkies, Cornish, ameraucanas, muscovies, ect, etc.

OK. Here goes. A goofy idea that I need some help with.

I want to rig up some kind of a halter on one of my Indian Runner ducks and with a leash so I can walk him around the Boone County State Fair sorta like you would with a dog. I think it would be a hoot.

I have a halter I got for my Lab, Millie, when she was a pup, but even that is too big. The kind I am talking about has a circle that goes around the neck another circle that goes around the body just behind the legs (wings) and a strap that connects the 2 circles down the chest.

Trouble is the blasted ducks are so slick. I don't want it so tight that it hurts the little beastie, but I don't want to have to chase it down when it escapes. Right now, I'm thinking velcro strips to make it easily adjustable, but trying to get the critter to hold still long enough to assemble it would problematic. I have had no luck taming the ducks down. When I am around, the whole flock runs in terror from me. This was true even at 1 day old. Try as I may, I can't seem to get them to settle down. At least, under leash, it will look like the duck is leading as it tries to get away from me.

The fair is the 3rd week of July.

Anybody got any suggestions other than that I need professional counseling?

You could try different sized halters for example toy sized dog, small, medium and so on.And it isnt that goofy I wanted to do the same with my chickens, but havent yet.Every year I walk my goats around our small county fair.Little kids love it,some other people stare disapprovinly but that is their problem, It think it is cute and funny.one year I walked my dog(a puppy at the time) and goat at the same time, it was harlrious.The puppy was weaving between the goats legs, which it did not care for.Wish I could help more, but all i can think of is trying different size halters.

They make cat harnesses that sound like exactly what you are looking for. You might need to buy two sizes and blend them together. A small for the neck and a med for the body loop. new velcro should hold up but after a while velcro gets to where it can almost open itself. Just thinking of my child's winter coat that has velcro on it. It was great when he first got it but not so much by the end of winter.

Cat harnesses are the first thing that came to my mind, too. I have had them for my cats for trips to the vet; they're pretty adjustable.

They actually make harnesses for birds. I had one for my African grey called an Aviator flight harness. Might be worth looking into, but not sure how well it would fit a duck.

I will definitely get pictures. My 16-year old grandson does professional-looking videos with his Macintosh computer. I'll have him make me up something or risk losing access to my ATV. That should do it. Who knows? The stupid duck might even get tamed down while I'm training it. I intend to choose either a chocolate (I'll name him/her Hershey) or a blue (which would, of course, be named Blue. Who says I don't have any imagination? I have 2 identical chocolate ducks, both will be Hershey. The 4 identical blue ducks, on the other hand will be something more original. Perhaps Blue 1, Blue 2, ............

The post office called me at 6:20 this morning to tell me that my chicks had arrived. When I got to the post office loading dock a few minutes later I was greeted with the sound of dozens upon dozens of peeping chicks. My first thought was, "Oh my gawd, the hatchery screwed up and sent me 100 instead of 10!" It turned out that a farmer was getting a rather large shipment today, and the big boxes of chicks were his. They handed me my little 9" x 12" box and I headed home.

As soon as I opened the box one daring chick hopped up on the side and looked at me, she was instantly my favorite. When my cousin and I divvy up the chicks I'm telling him, "You can have any ones you want except HER! : ) I looked them over, got them settled in the brooder, and made sure they started drinking some water. Later on when I got out of the shower I found my husband in here with them, I think he may be hooked too!

Haha That's pretty funny about the farmer's box of 100 chicks arriving at the same time as yours! It's not surprising about your husband mesmerized by "Chicken TV." The chicks are so adorable! You'll be amazed that every day you will be able to see changes; they grow so quickly.
