INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

OK. Here goes. A goofy idea that I need some help with.

I want to rig up some kind of a halter on one of my Indian Runner ducks and with a leash so I can walk him around the Boone County State Fair sorta like you would with a dog. I think it would be a hoot.

I have a halter I got for my Lab, Millie, when she was a pup, but even that is too big. The kind I am talking about has a circle that goes around the neck another circle that goes around the body just behind the legs (wings) and a strap that connects the 2 circles down the chest.

Trouble is the blasted ducks are so slick. I don't want it so tight that it hurts the little beastie, but I don't want to have to chase it down when it escapes. Right now, I'm thinking velcro strips to make it easily adjustable, but trying to get the critter to hold still long enough to assemble it would problematic. I have had no luck taming the ducks down. When I am around, the whole flock runs in terror from me. This was true even at 1 day old. Try as I may, I can't seem to get them to settle down. At least, under leash, it will look like the duck is leading as it tries to get away from me.

The fair is the 3rd week of July.

Anybody got any suggestions other than that I need professional counseling?

John

Ugh, i am tired! Made the trip to littleameraucanamom's flock and picked up chicks and eggs. All I can say is if you are wanting a breed that she has, you can not go wrong with her stock. They are beautiful! Just seeing one of her cochin hens made me take a chick home. If I had more room for breeding, Would have bought more than just the one. They are impressive! But then so are her buckeyes, silkies, Cornish, ameraucanas, muscovies, ect, etc.

Do you ever travel to the Winamac area?

It's good to see posts from members we haven't heard from lately-- like strssed mom (she's still stressed), tntbell, backyard bitten, and our other beloved curmudgeon (besides Old Salt) Old Rooster!

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List? “Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc. Click on the link at the end of this post (INDIANA BYC’ers Member List) to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? Quinstar actually adds the info, so you can PM her directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/and or Avatar
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different. Or if anyone wants to discontinue using the one I made for them and make their own, no offense taken.

I will say again--heat lamps are an unnecessary fire hazard in your chicken coop! It doesn't matter if they are bolted to the ceiling, they can set fire to the dust that accumulates on them or even that floats through the air! Dust can get in outlets or where a cord is plugged into an extension cord and pose a fire hazard! And improperly employed extension cords, such as ones meant for indoor use that are used outside, can be a fire hazard! Chickens really don't need the help in winter--really! Don't take the risk!
I don't use heat lamps/heat unless it goes below the 0's. Its a matter of what you feel is safe. If I do use them, you can bet I am out there every half hour. I have an oil filled radiant heater I will use before I risk heat bulbs. It warms my main coop, 12x14 pretty well, but doesn't overheat them. It sets on cinder block well above the bedding and separated from the coop area. I use the lamps to bring the temps up, still below freezing and then remove them. I have never had frostbite in my birds, and the BR, BA and LO all have single combs. Everyone has to make their own choices as to what they are most comfortable with and be prepared for the risks involved.

Quote: I have heard they will. Its so adorable when they all do it. Usually I see them display when I add new babies to the coop or there is something new that freaks them out.
This lil poult got to come in to meet gramma. 2 weeks and displaying

congrats to everyone with new chickies! I am envious of those who can hatch ur own! I hope next spring my DBF and our daughter and I will all be in a new house to where I can have more chickens and possibly try my own hand at hatching!!!

Fed my older girls some cantelope and honey dew last night for the first time. As always, Big Red (aka my red pullet Rosie--who is my fave) had to be the first to try it. She didn't know what to think at first, then the next thing I know, she is over by the cup that the fruit is sitting in-taking out each piece of fruit one by one with her beak. I tell you, the nerve of some inpatient hens!!! My two leghorns were just kind of checking it out here and there. I am anxiously awaiting the first egg since they are all 17 going on 18 weeks old. Can't wait to get it!!!!

hope everyone is doing well!!! Can't wait for this big chicken get together, just gotta make sure we have no other plans on that weekend.
TTFN!
Its so rewarding and just amazing to hatch chicks, hoping you can enjoy the experience too.

The post office called me at 6:20 this morning to tell me that my chicks had arrived. When I got to the post office loading dock a few minutes later I was greeted with the sound of dozens upon dozens of peeping chicks. My first thought was, "Oh my gawd, the hatchery screwed up and sent me 100 instead of 10!" It turned out that a farmer was getting a rather large shipment today, and the big boxes of chicks were his. They handed me my little 9" x 12" box and I headed home.

As soon as I opened the box one daring chick hopped up on the side and looked at me, she was instantly my favorite. When my cousin and I divvy up the chicks I'm telling him, "You can have any ones you want except HER! : ) I looked them over, got them settled in the brooder, and made sure they started drinking some water. Later on when I got out of the shower I found my husband in here with them, I think he may be hooked too!

Here's a link to my Google+ where I am posting pics and videos: https://plus.google.com/u/2/108504528764462877739

They are five Easter Eggers and five Black Australorps from Cackle Hatchery in Missouri.

I love getting the new babies, both breeds are just wonderful birds. Congrats! Don't be afraid to pick them up, talk to them. I talk to my eggs before they hatch

They all answer to "CHIPPY" and know my voice.
YEP I am a crazy chicken lady, and I love every minute of it.

After hearing little peeps last night, I have my first two chicks of this batch. They are still in the incubator for now since they are wet but they are adorable.

On a different note my adult product roo killed off one of my 12 week pan fry chicks last night. I guess we need to get him another coop or temporary housing set up. I would put him in with the hens but one has a sore leg and he attacks it constantly. The leg was doing better till this morning. I had left the garage door cracked and the hen escaped out to where the roo was free ranging. After the roo mated with her the leg looks worse than the first night we had her in the garage. I went a head and put her back in with the rest of the hens since it was clear that is what she wanted.

John ~ are you sure you don't need a mean rooster replacement?
Congrats on the peeps! That roo sure needs in the stewpot. Mean birds have no place but the freezer. My GLW and my silkie roo are both on borrowed time. The silkie "butters" has about pushed me to my limit, he goes after any new babies and tries to mate them. He is a buff, and not a very attractive one during his molt! If my oldest DD wasn't attached he would already be gone. My GLW is just a mean roo, and he is one of my 6 original chickens. He is people aggressive, so his days are numbered. He gives mostly roo chicks too, so I am very close to culling him.

It was good to see you again. I do have chickens every where, I think I really need help !!! I've got to shut that incubator off!!
