Okay I am going to drill a hole in an old bucket first just to make sure I dont break one of the buckets I just bought.I am not going t use the nipple waterers until they go into the adult pen, but I am trying to have the pens ready(building on). Thanks
With a junk bucket, choose a drill and try it. Move up or down 1 size until you determine which works best.

The nipple should have a little gasket or O-ring on it that will make the waterproof seal. It should be snugged down, but not crushed. Done about right, it should be leak-free.

Don't forget, you don't have to buy buckets, you can get them free from bakery dumpsters. All you have to do is to clean (lick?) the icing/filling out of them. Every so often, I lay one on its side in the chicken yard and let the chickens eat the leftover yummies from the bucket. The buckets are, of course, food grade. I put a screw through the end of a broom handle to make a hook to make retrieval easier. I have about 40 or 50 buckets of varying sizes. I cut them up and make all manner of equipment for the feathered varmits. Feeders, waterers, nest boxes, etc.

Been up all night, we lost power due to the thunderstorms. I am just sick over it. Carried the incubators to the truck to keep them warm, the inverter won't support all of them. We have a generator thing that would not start. Battery backup failed in 2 hours. I have 3 incbators full of geese duck quail turkey and guinea.. oh my

over 200 birds! I buried the bators in blankets, and I hope it didn't harm my chicks. We were without power about 5 hours

Just sick over it, we had all the right stuff, but most of it failed. Ugh! I feel so hopeless, you do all the planning and it doesn't work when you need it.

Is there any hope for the eggs or have I just lost all of my babies?

I lost power for about 8 hrs one winter, about 25 degrees out , I just covered incubator with blankets, . Chicks hatched just fine

Oh ugh...

I am sorry to hear about your power going out during such a crucial time for the eggs. We loose power here often. Think this is one of the reasons we have yet to incubate.
Can not imagine how stressful that would be.
If the backup fails and the generator will not run it does not leave you with too many options.
Maybe some portable propane heaters for emergency back up. Not super safe, but if you were up and with them anyway. One in a small bathroom might be sufficient to keep them toasty.

I hope everything goes well with the eggs. The quick thinking of the truck and blankets might have been enough to ensure the eggs did not cool down too much.

Hello! I am Annette from Walkerton, IN! I am new to this forum and new to chickens. I have 18 total. 4 Easter Egger pullets (the sweethearts), 2 Easter Egger roos, 3 Gold Laced Wyandotte Roos, and 9 GLW pullets (the witches)! Going to have to thin the male population soon, or build more coops!
