INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Been up all night, we lost power due to the thunderstorms. I am just sick over it. Carried the incubators to the truck to keep them warm, the inverter won't support all of them. We have a generator thing that would not start. Battery backup failed in 2 hours. I have 3 incbators full of geese duck quail turkey and guinea.. oh my over 200 birds! I buried the bators in blankets, and I hope it didn't harm my chicks. We were without power about 5 hours Just sick over it, we had all the right stuff, but most of it failed. Ugh! I feel so hopeless, you do all the planning and it doesn't work when you need it.
Is there any hope for the eggs or have I just lost all of my babies?

Hello!   I am Annette from Walkerton, IN!    I am new to this forum and new to chickens.    I have 18 total.   4 Easter Egger pullets (the sweethearts), 2 Easter Egger roos, 3 Gold Laced Wyandotte Roos, and 9 GLW pullets (the witches)!   Going to have to thin the male population soon, or build more coops!

Well, it would be nice to have electricity installed in the coop. They'll just have to make do this summer with their newly expanded water park. I even have a turtle sandbox full of fresh dirt (they'll end up caked in mud!) We have a swimming pool, but luckily they have never been interested. I guess they read the sign about No Pooping in the Pool.

My neighbors don't have a problem with our chickens. Or the crowing. I like the crowing so much that I play it on the stereo, and broadcast it thru the outdoor speakers. I have it on a loop, it goes for hours. Real loud, way louder then the chickens can crow.

You should see the confused chickens in my back yard.

Welcome to the summer of the broody!

I just pulled my uber-broody gold laced Wyandotte hen off a nest, where I then discovered she had been sitting on broken eggs and egg goop all day. She had two eggs glued into her feathers and a whole lot of nasty egg goop all over her belly. Needless to say, Miss Broody Wyandotte did not appreciate the hosing off she got after that stunt.

Meanwhile, I have a golden Sebright hen, Amy, who went broody right after I got her silver Sebright sister, Scooter, to quit brooding.

This isn't as big of a surprise, though, as Chickie, the 8 YEAR OLD Easter-egger who has never brooded in her life, deciding to up and go broody as well!

I need more broody busting cages!

Hello! I'm in West Lafayette and am looking for a coop for my very small, residential backyard. I'm a master gardener and am excited to add chickens to my productive backyard...but first I need a coop.

Welcome, first of all. And don't leave this thread long, since you will have 100 posts to read after 3 days lol. You can buy coops at farm stores such as Tractor Supply, but from what I've seen most people build thier own. It's like bonding with your chicks, the love you put into the coop. We built ours after looking at the prices of the ones in the stores and online, and how cheap (cheep?) they seem. Ours will stand up to a small tornado. And yes build the coop before you get chickens, especially if you want chickens that are already laying. Look on the coop section of this website and you will get plenty of ideas.

Thanks, I will experiment with an old bucket.And they only thing close to a bakery I can think of is a dongnunt shop(they arent very friendly).If all fails I can just buy some more from lowes they are less then $3.

Just ask the cops. They should help you get what you need from the donut shop.

Hi! I just started out here and didn't do it coop first which I completely regret. The chicks were overwhelmingly cute but grew so fast! We are still working on our coop very slowly, but here is a site from Ohio that I considered getting a coop from before: http://cconly.com/coop__hutches/cc-01__03_series They had several styles and sizes. I wish I had known how fast this coop project would expand but the coop plans were just so enticing. Good luck with your project!
