HaHa, ya.And I'm not sure if the people even speak english.They might, but one time I went to get donuts and the lady that was making the could not understand anything I was saying and I couldnt understand anything she said, she might of just been a worker but for some reason i thought she owned it.

So we've gotten 4 eggs. 1 on the 19th, 1 on the 20th (it was broken) 1 on the 22nd and 1 today. We are really happy to be getting them already, we were not eggspecting any until August 1st. Our chickens were all 16 weeks old 3 days ago. The eggs are from the white leghorns. Not sure which one, we have 2 leghorns. Our other layers will give us brown eggs.

Have not eaten any yet! Too scared. There is no tinfoil wrapped around the eggs, the space station was overhead the other night, the biggest moon until August '14 is showing right now. Expecting zombies any hour now.

Very happy, we won't have to buy eggs anymore this summer!

Congrats on your first eggs!I was excited when I got mine, even more excited when my easter egger started laying at 11 months old (pretty blue eggs).

DH was scared about eating his first 'fresh' eggs too. A week or so later I scrambled a few... The rest is history... Well until he discovered how to check for fertility. That gave him a week break.

Many congratulations.. All that hard work is finally paying off!

Just don't forget to put the date on your eggs. I put the date they were laid, written in pencil. Had a few moments of rushing and not dating things believing I would remember... Well... Not so much.

Congratulations to everyone on the first eggs. Haven't gotten any here yet, but am anxiously waiting. The girls combs and wattles are starting to color up, and one of them started squatting whenever I go near her yesterday. She even lets me pick her up now. Should only be a matter of time, either that or they have found a spot besides the nest boxes that I haven't discovered yet.

I'm curious. Still a bit new with chickens, but I plan on starting a breeding program with Cream Legbars and maybe (who am I kidding...definitely) a few other breeds.

I'd like to benefit from the wisdom and mistakes experience of others. Before I rush off to build a bunch of pens and put a lot of work into setting things up, I'm wondering if anyone on here who lives within a couple hours of Indy who has been doing this would be willing to mentor me through starting up. I'd like to see someone (or several someone's) operations before I take off in a direction and find out it is totally inappropriate for what I'm trying to do.

I have the tendency to research any of my endeavors to death, and this is one phase of that.

I've found good planning can make life so much easier, and so can listening to those with more experience than me. (Which is just about everyone on here right now.) One of the reasons I volunteered to host the upcoming Poultryfest

was for the opportunity to pick so many brains at once.

So if there are any hardy souls out there

who feel they have it in them to guide a newby breeder through the ins and outs of the art of Rooster meets Hen, and they live happily ever after, please feel free to contact me. I promise questions galore, but also the undying thanks of the chicken obsessed.

Does anyone have any true black chicks or hens for sale? I lost one of my girls to heat today and I really need to find a few more for my paint pen. I will even consider eggs if they are from true black breeding. Can anyone help or know anyone that might be selling any?

Phew, okay, we've got 4 cinderblocks down on the foundation/lower wall of the coop addition now! (4 down, 26 to go. ) Found a gigantic ball of roots right where the wall would have been (to be honest, we should have expected that from the huge walnut tree right there ), so we've improvised. Instead of matching the length of the coop at 10 feet, the addition will be 8 feet long to avoid the evil ball of roots, and 6 feet wide rather than the planned 4. Works for me.

Nothing much to see yet, though I did get pictures of the progress for documentation if anyone wants to see. Man, I'm tired!

Hi everyone! I have been so busy I haven't had a chance to get on and I'm way behind on posts. So I'll just add some pics of my hot chicks from the 90 degree weather today.

After a few foot dips in cool water, a spray down of the run,some lettuce and lots of drinking water and shade, They made it through the day.

Your chickens are really pretty and I like how your run looks. Do you like the sand? Do they have a shady spot in the run or coop? I am wondering because our chickens can get under our coop, but I'm not sure if that's cool enough for them or if they need more help cooling down.

Thanks! Yes I love the sand! I can just rake out the poop and hose it down to make a nice cool spot for them. The raking is kind of like having a zen garden lol. Mine free range all day in a quarter acre pasture that has a huge canopy of trees. But the Silkies choose to lay in the sun and pant, because although cute, they are not geniuses, so I soak their feet a few times a day in cool water. Their coop is shaded all day until evening, then it is blazing sun, but they usually stay out in the shade until bedtime. They can get under their coop also, it must stay very cool under there, because they stay under the coop quite a bit.
