INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Funny thing about that green paint. I painted a roost with it and it hurts my eyes. Not sure I can do it even if its free. I ran out of white for the outside and had to buy more, so I'm hoping there is enough in there to do the inside too, but either way its so close to done. I just need to find a good source of construction grade sand and get the rest of the frame up for the run.
This evening, I was working on re-doing the landscaping in the front of our house and my five hens were helping me as usual. A couple of women out for an evening walk, stopped and one said, "Are those REAL?" (no, they're robots?) I explained that they were pets with benefits-- eggs. Then she said, "Is that big black one the rooster? I explained that it wasn't; it's a Jersey Giant. "Oh, it's BIG!" (yes, that's what giant means). "How do you get eggs if you don't have a rooster?" "Do the eggs taste okay?" Geez. Maybe I was a little testy because of the heat and humidity.
Those questions are so funny and I'm pretty sure I would have asked the same things before my first chicken book! It happens with my dog a lot too. We have a brindle Bullmastiff and people ask me all the time if she is a Pit Bull. My dog has about 70 lbs on a standard Pit Bull, but I guess if you aren't familiar with breeds, it would seem the same. Thankfully not nearly the prey drive so my chickens are just fun to run around with rather than dinner. Even though I know she's a good girl, I still don't trust her out there with them unsupervised with them, or even alone with kids for more than a minute or two.
Brad was hatching chicks for me in the hopes of getting a few lavender. Unfortunately only one turned out to be a lavender, but the others were so pretty I had to get one of each color! My 4 new babies came home Wednesday & I love them!

Hope I got all the roo/hen cross/colors right Brad! Can't wait to see how they all turn out -- and hopefully they're not all roos! He also finished hatching quail for my daughter & I took home another 19 chicks for her. Thanks for the hatches!!

Those are some gorgeous babies you have there!

Yesterday I was with my kids at Hobby Lobby and found this nice little piece of art for the coop. Yes, I understand the chickens don't care, but I still have to look at it! Happy Friday everyone!

Close on the crosses. The third is a LC roo over lavender hens and the bottom is a LC roo over buff hens. Can't wait to see how the Sussex mix turn out! And if you got 19 quail, I'm sorry I miss counted! I meant to send an even 20. I figured Chloe would appreciate the extra lol.

He hasn't rushed me so far, so I hope I'm nipping it in the bud before it would ever get to that point. He likes me fine, he is just testing the waters. I just didn't want to be challenging him by mistake by making him move out of my way walking at him. I do have to turn around and walk the other way at some point though lol! I didn't know he he would take that as me backing down. He stops walking away from me when I stop walking towards him, if that makes sense.

When I was a kid, we had an aggressive rooster that was my Dad's pride and joy. He didn't bother us three brothers because we would kick him when he came after us.

Our little sister couldn't kick effectively, if one of us wasn't there to protect her, she got attacked. Once too often, it turns out. Mom grabbed him up, chopped off his head, and served chicken dinner. She waited until after dinner before telling Dad it was his rooster.
