INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

not sure where you are located, but our members list might be a good place to start if you are wanting different ages of chicks. The other options would be CL and buy chicks at different times or the feed stores and making multiple trips to get new ones at different ages. It can be a bit much though to have multiple brooder boxes with different temps going for 8 chicks. Which brings me back to our members list. You might be able to find two or three members close to you that are willing to sell started chicks at varying ages. Brad hatches chicks, I have hatchery chicks that I'm growing out to sell as laying hens in March, and I know there are others on here that have a love for watching little chicks hatch but run out of coop space really fast. Brad is in the North, I'm central but south of Indy and there is a nice farm in greencastle too. If you are close to them you might only have to make one stop. here is a link to their FB page. https://www.facebook.com/HeavenlySpringsFarm?hc_location=stream There are others too, I'm just short on memory right now.

Ew, Ew, Ew, Ew, Ew!

I was out in the coop raking around the deep litter when I came across a nest of fully furred young mice. I didn't even have time to react before 26 chicken came at them from all different directions. I have never seen so much commotion in all my life.

The chickens snatched up those mice and banged their little heads on the floor, walls, and ground until they stopped moving. Then they played a few rounds of "Who's Mouse is it"! As they ripped the mice out of each others mouths, they happily ate little pieces of the mice until there was nothing left.

Have you ever seen such a thing? I had no idea chickens ate mice!!!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ours love mice. It really freaked me out the first time it happened, but with all the harvesting going on around us right now, it seems like every day we see them playing "catch" with at least one. Poor little mice are probably out trying to stockpile for the winter and have the dumb luck of wandering into the run instead!

Thanks for the feedback. My biggest fear is there not eating or drinking but I'm also not out there all day so I'm hoping they are. Hopefully in a couple of days they get more social.

Srssmom- wait till you see your chickens fight over FULL sized mice!! My BO's have been the best at that!! No fear!!!

Pimento- I added an EE back at Labor Day and she still hangs by herself and in the pen all day. She's pretty wild but will run out of the barn when I go in and run back in as soon as I'm gone. She only leaves t drink because I don't have water in the barn. But she seems happy and healthy so I guess she's fine.

Just watch for weight loss. As long as they arent losing a lot of weight they will be okay. But if it worrying you a lot just go in the pen and throw them off the roosts. They might not appreciate, but oh well they will get over it

Whew I've been busy lately. Just caught up on the posts, funny reading about the poor little mice. First time I saw one of our chickens with a baby bird in its' mouth, I thought she was crazy. Went go-cart racing with Indy car drivers last Saturday, Sebastian Servaadras was our pro. Very fun. I'll put up a few pictures for Racin later, he did some go-carting before he found out about fowl.

Brad, I' glad you found the owner of the doggies!
Pipd, your chickens look like mine, chicken pattern baldness.

Okay this is going to be pic heavy, but I finally got some decent pics of the silkies. They range between 5 days old and 2 weeks

Love the "poses" here! Too cute!!

Yesterday I got an egg in a nesting box. I only have 8 hens in the pen and they have been laying for around 3 months. Only took one 3 months to figure out to lay there but ones finally got it! Lets if any of the others catch on lol

Yay!! My girls finally figured it out, despite the occasional egg by the feeder. The silkies think under the ramp outside is the nesting box. More time was spent on aesthetics than intelligence when they were created. Cute, but dumber than a bag of hammers.
