I have several Gold Laced Wyandotte hens if anyone is looking, will sell for cheap, they are all march hatches and younger.
I will be hatching them again net year, but have entirely too many hens.
PM me if you are interested.

bradselig posted: Ok, so a (short) chicken train is in place for Friday 11/15 in the afternoon (time still to be determined). I'll be going from Warren (Huntington county) to meet up with Jchny2000 in the Anderson area. If you need chickens delivered to the area or brought back up north, get with me to arrange it.

Indiana BYCers: I will be in Indy around the 19th - 21st-- not exactly sure, but I can transport poultry from Janet/jchny to areas between Indy and Eville. Bloomington, Columbus, Greencastle, Terre Haute -- there are many routes I can take home, so I can work it out if someone would like a chicken delivery.
I took pictures of The Brown Girls today. Unfortunately, the fall leaves in the background are a little too "busy." I haven't been able to take a good photo of Adeline that really captures her magnificence.

Here's Bonbon, English Chocolate Orpington Bantam:

Here's Adeline, English Jubilee Orpington:

I ran across this picture of Adeline when I first got her. Haha

Thanks M2H, oh my the girls are just stunning!

Thank goodness it's Friday! It's been a long week!!

Reposting: Any suggestions for keeping the babies from sleeping in the nest boxes? I don't really want poopy eggs!!
Usually they grow out of it pretty fast. I have 2 that still do sometimes.
I put in a lower roost and that solved the problem for the most part.
Happy Friday to all of you. I'm new to this group, so hello. I live in Brown County. I have 7 hens, one of which is broody and trying to hatch chicks as we speak. They were due yesterday, but I didn't see any signs of life yesterday evening. And I have 5 more in the bator now, due tomorrow.

Is there an outlet any of you know of for roosters? I have 2 bantam roosters that were hatched earlier this summer (June), and I'm sure I'll have a few roo's from this batch. I am not opposed to sharing them for freezer use down the road, I just don't care to do it myself. I had an a-hole in Indpls on Wed suggest that since I live in the woods, just let them go live (or die) by way of nature. Sorry, can't do that. Here are a couple of pictures of them if anyone wants them for their beauty and future breeding. They are nice, I just don't want any roosters around. Thanks for any thoughts.

Welcome to the thread!

Sending good hatching vibes!
They certainly are handsome, the blk/silver especially, just love him!
If you don't find a taker I may be able to make room for him, I have a silver duckwing hen that he would be perfect for.

Thanks for the input

I think I might try some curtains when I move the stinkers they just wait until I leave and go back :-/ The nest boxes are probably the same height as my lowest roost but I may do some reconfiguring because I need to add more boxes before the babies start laying.
Kab- are your boxes on the floor? Do you have a pic behind the curtains? I'm trying to figure out where to put the new boxes.

what a pain. I use firefox on a laptop so the site works ok for me but I'm not so sure I would put up with code.
I love firefox. No hassles no problems. I use it too.
I just saw this, it looks like a nice deal for a small amount of chickens.

I have a full brooder, and just locked down 63 quail eggs, these are the group from the power outage.
I think I can see movement in a few so an hoping there's not a total loss

Scrambling around today to find a large tote for a second broody box LOL!
I snag any plastic storage box someone is tossing out and keep them on hand.

Thanks bradselig. I think I did get myself added a few months ago, just been slow to get engaged here. You guys are a VERY involved and supportive of one another!!
I remember you, zippy, because of your unusual avatar. I had asked about the beautiful birds, and you replied:

Welcome Back! Your bantam roos are gorgeous! I hope someone gives them a good home. I know that unfortunately, roos are a dime a dozen, but those are really stunning. What kind are they?
Thank goodness it's Friday! It's been a long week!!

browncow~ Can you block the nesting boxes off with something at bedtime, so the babies can't get in them? Do your other hens come in a knock the babies out of the boxes in the morning or are you looking ahead? I kind of have the same problem. I have two nesting boxes in the coop and the two orps have been sleeping together in one of them at night since The Five Mean Hens won't allow them on the perches. My laying hens are kind of like cats in that they find new favorite places to lay, and the place they've been laying all summer is a Rubbermaid tote in the garage. I had extra pine shavings in the tote and forgot to put the lid on, so they decided it was a nice laying spot. The orps haven't started laying, and they may not until spring, so I haven't worried about them sleeping in the nesting boxes. They feel safe there, and that's the important thing.

I got two new hens today. They are black jersey giants that were going to be used for the dinner table but my friend gave them to me. I can't wait for some jumbo eggs!
I have 4 BJG hens. They lay regular sized eggs. Sorry to burst your bubble. Mine are May 2013 birds and not full grown, but so far, regular size.

John

I figured I was the last of the human race who hasn't had it before. But honestly, wasn't too expressed for a $7 frozen pizza. I'll stick to my $1.50 totinos when I need a quick and easy meal.

I don't buy groceries. When Mitzie and I were first married, she sent me to the store for bread and I came back with 6 bags of stuff that she didn't want or like. I was immediately banned from entry into a grocery store. D*mn, I'm smart.

I'm very interested in this subject. I'm not all that fond of having to pluck poop balls from the nesting hay. Then I forget about it and some time later scratch my nose

John

Browncow, when my babies are sleeping in the nest box, I go out every night after dark and move them to the perches. They eventually get the hint and start going to perch on their own.
smile.png

And here is the solution. Just that quick. Only problem is the Indian Runner Ducks and Guineas. When I go into the hen house after dark, they absolutely freak out. It's enough to wake the dead and heaven knows we have enough zombies wandering the earth.

John

I like the "personality" of this thread. There is a lot of "drama" and disrespect on some threads but this is a great group of people!

BTW...where is Old Salt lately? I was "kidding" him the other day and I hope it didn't sound mean or disrespectful!

I am adding an 8 x 8 expansion to the coupe inside the barn. Trying to make it varmint proof. Correcting some problems in the original coop stemming from "It seemed like a good idea at the time" syndrome.

My daughter who has been living in Charleston, WV has decided to move back to Indiana. She has a second job interview next Friday.

She was looking for a house to buy in the Noblesville area. We found a large 4-bedroom tri-level in in need of a lot of cleaning, painting, carpeting, water heater, furnace, A/C, chimney rebuild, landscaping, drywall repairs, and on and on. I'm guessing about $20-30k of repairs to turn a 120k house into a 190k house. I'll have to buy the house and wait for her to sell her WV house to get my money back. So I have to structure the deal so that, if something happens, I can sell the house and get my money back. She is the daughter of the three who could build a house from scratch, given the time and money. She can do most of the work needed. She bought the WV house in similar disrepair and has fixed it up quite well.

So that is consuming a lot of my time. I have been skimming the posts, but not taking the time to make my usual snide comments and endlessly blathering on about stuff that happened 50 or 60 years ago.

John

I was driving to church two weeks ago and there was a chicken sitting in the middle of the road (Pawnee by Indian Trail in WL). We turned around to go "help" but she had got up and crossed the road.

Susan

You didn't stop and ask her why?

John

Hello This is a test. My son stopped by and said that bold and colors, etc. should display when I hit submit (not save as the directions state). He agreed that BYC needs to step up. It is a pain to do it this way. The color palette isn't working. I guess there's one choice. I am on the desktop version, which is supposed to work better than the mobile one(!)

I am a "wanna be" backyard chicken farmer in West Lafayette. I have been reading and dreaming. I saw this book recommended and I bought it. It is my life! I am in the drawing stages of a coop for spring. I am thoroughly enjoying it and wish I were reading it slower. The illustrations really add to the book. I am reading it on a kindle fire. However, today I have my simple e-reader and the book still looks great.

Anybody here live in the Lafayette area? I was driving to church two weeks ago and there was a chicken sitting in the middle of the road (Pawnee by Indian Trail in WL). We turned around to go "help" but she had got up and crossed the road.

Info for you and other recent new people who've posted:

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. bradselig actually adds the info, so you can PM him directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. if you have any questions about this thread, please PM Jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group. Others on our volunteer committee are helping to help~ Quinstar, vickichicki, and CluckAcres.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

ellyMayRans posted: Funny how I thought I was addicted to chickens...and now hatching!

ellyMayRans~ I haven't had the nerve to get into that . . . yet, but I have noticed a need on this thread for not only a Chicken Enablers Support Group, but also a Hatchers Anonymous Support Group. bradselig and jchny could get that group started! I need to form a group for people like me who think their chickens are their children.
