INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

This is what ours ended up looking like inside. In the summer I can leave the outer doors open all the time as the interior walls are 1/2" hardware cloth built for predator safety.

But you could just get the shed and use as-is! You don't have to get as fancy-pants as all this. It's just nice to be able to open the door and walk in without a chicken herd running out !

We put the nest box inside so I wouldn't have to gather eggs in the snow and cold outside. But it does take up some space internally. They can use the floor under it though.

I personally would not like the main doors centered on the longer length. To me it would be a waste of space inside. I wouldn't like to open the doors and immediately inside the coop. I like having a little area to work and store supplies. I can also get away from the elements and chickens if I need to say fill feeders or medicate a chicken. If the main doors were on the shorter width wall you can block off the first several feet and then have the rest of the shed as coop.

Not sure if I'm making sense. Of course it also depends on how big of a "coop" area you are making in the shed.

That makes sense to me. I like the idea of a single door too so if I do an interior walk-in area it can be smaller than the full double width.

We got ours for $250 through Habit Restore so I took what it was! :D

Hogster - could you post a photo of your hen house?  It sounds a lot like mine!

Last year I  had straw bales around the base for a wind break.  Haven't gotten any yet this year but I sweep the snow up against the base so it creates a wind break and insulation factor when we have snow.

If the snow melts later this week I'll have to get some straw again.  Supposed to be in the 30s and 40s later this week if the forecast is right.

This is from when I was building it in the spring. I'll take some more pics tomorrow. The wall you see with the full size door is facing the east, to the right is north, left is south.

Edited to add: ok the door is not in the picture lmao, the wall with the large window is east.

Everybody's barn/coops look so nice----I wish we'd have taken pictures before everything got uhm--should we say 'broken in'?
And seriously--$250? I'd love to stumble on a deal like that....Although the $5 dog house might win the best deal prize...

Yes. $250 but we had to move it.

They are widening highway 31 south of South Bend and my husband had his eye on some yard sheds that were on properties they were tearing down. They had already been sold to the hwy dept. so the owners couldn't sell them directly. The highway dept. turns them over to a contractor who turned them over to Habit to glean whatever they wanted before the teardown.

Highway dept. gave us the name of the contractor who had us call Habitat and we got it from there. It wasn't even the one he was looking at but this one was ready to go when we needed it and the others properties wouldn't get into Habitat's possession for a couple months later.

Looking back, I now wish I had asked them to contact us when the others were ready as I'd have used 2; just didn't know I'd want more chickens at the time as this was our first flock.

Quote: X2 they are just gorgeous! Put me on your egg list too please!

I do have BCM but need a rooster, as always! I have 2 hens I kept that I am happy with the color and temperament.
I may add more soon, once people are selling eggs again, and hens start laying.
In the meantime I plan on hatching olive eggers, have some adorable rhodebar, and a legbar roo to pick from!
I am in madison county, SE end, south of pendleton

We will be tearing out the egg coop soon, its in bad shape, and rebuilding
It will be breeding pens and a new, smaller "egg flock" coop.
These are the friendly birds that aren't quite what I want in color or shape, But enjoy them as flock members.
Mostly EE and oddball breeds I only have a few of. Cut a lot of the roosters out already and more go this week.
