INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

*comes in waving a stick*
Hey now, those straight combed, Brad S. silkies are coming home with me!

I think they're a christmas present to myself...is that bad? I know my baby would love to have them under the tree Wednesday morning, but she's already going to get too much that day. Riiiiiiiiiiiight?

Can't wait! DD is just so excited over raising them. She is probably going for SQ eventually, but for now she is just enjoying them.
For myself I just enjoy the breed, and really want broody hens. It will be a nice change for us, letting the hens raise chicks naturally.
We plan to let a lot of the birds raise their own, I plan to hatch my LO and the BCM/OE in the bators tho, and the pekin ducks too.
2 months and I am ordering my sportsman cabinet, can't wait

If you get a broody girl let me know, I can get eggs to you that she can hatch, that way you don't have to use your incubator. Did you count toes? They come from show lines. Sometimes you just get one with four toes instead of 5 which is a disqualification in show. My roo has 4 toes on one foot, and out of 11 babies I only had 4 born with 4 toes on one of their feet.

Tomorrow is my last day of training in Wash DC/Maryland area. I'm staying in Maryland, but the class is in Virginia--an hour subway ride. 10 hour class, 2 hour subway rides, I'm exhausted.

The hotel has breakfast included....powdered eggs and turkey Canadian bacon are two of the offerings. I was going to take a picture of the pile of reconstituted powdered eggs, but they chased me away. If I had hogs and was used to real bacon, I would've been doubly offended.

Living in Indy, and having seen a few places, don't imagine I'm a country bumpkin. In Indy, the population is 33% white, 33% black and 33% Hispanic--the mix is awesome, I love it. I can order dinner in either Spanish or English, the coupons at my grocery store is in both English and Spanish. I feel very 'metropolitan' for a Hoosier. In Wash DC, the population is really mixed at a much finer level. Maybe there's 10 different ethnicities each at 10%. My inability to identify everybody and the different languages makes me feel backward.

I went to CVS for ibuprofen and a homeless woman outside the door asked me for money. I had no cash, so I told her 'sorry'. She says 'Merry Christmas, God bless'. On the way out, she asked me for my change. I told her again, I had no cash. She was very vulgar and gave me entirely different Christmas wishes....I was speechless.

I paid $12 for a tiny glass of beer...$28 for a hamburger and mashed potatoes, and $3.19 for a fountain coke...Thank goodness for expense reports.

I miss grass. I miss dogs, cats and chickens. I miss home. Just a few more hours and I'll be back on Hoosier soil. I can't wait!!

Oh, good idea! I have a wicker basket for the quail eggs but am always forgetting to grab it.
I just need to go dig more out of storage.
I keep a stack of 1 quart size strawberry boxes in the barn. They easily hold 1 dozen eggs. We're also constantly forgetting to take our egg basket out with us and so we often have a couple of berry baskets in use for carrying the duck & chicken eggs.

Quote: Very good idea too! I have so many wicker baskets saved, in storage.. in the garage... (((shudders))) We built on 1800 sq feet, and moved over here when mom was diagnosed with cancer.
Some of what I have stored out there has been in boxes for 9 years now or more, ugh. Its a nice 2 car garage that may someday become my "dream coop" If I ever get time to go through whats there. It and the barn have concrete floors so the garage is pointless for cars.

Chicago is that way too, just amazing how many different cultures, people you meet.
I really enjoyed learning about so many different people! I would never give up my home to go back tho. Love our quiet life here.
Wow what an experience with the homeless person, just sad. I never carry cash.
I bet all your critters miss you too! I love camping in the summer, but I almost don't like leaving home anymore.
Miss my birds & critters too much!

Quote: I like that too! See how everyone is so good at it, am at a loss.
Quote: Oh no, sure didn't yet! Will count in the morning when I change their paper and snuggle them all

My pullet is almost 6 months now. I am really hoping she will start to lay soon, very pretty little white silkie.

Two of my girls tried to go broody today. They don't do it for long, but they lay an egg and then don't get up. I get grumbled at when I collect them. It's too cold for babies right now. A little scratch takes thier minds off of it, but man do they get perterbed when I make them get up. :)

My EE Bunny goes broody late February usually, oh my what a ferocious girl! she puffs up and just growls!
I wear a welding glove with her, she will peck, bite and not let go, just "brutal".. any other time she is calm and sweet.
I have a GLW Spike thats just as bad, lil stinkers. This year the girls will get to raise their own.

They silkies never try to bite. They just growl and scream at me. I feel bad, but they do this at least once a week. I would have way too many silkies if I let them hatch them all. Plus as cold as it is, and they are so ditzy, the eggs would freeze before they could lay another one. They have short attention spans.

So true, I think all the birds are that way. I don't even think about hatching any till early Feb, probably later this year if the temps stay below freezing much.
I check for eggs several times a day, but did get a lot frozen ones in the mornings last year.
My geese seem to be the best at remembering people, things..and mom steals their eggs!
My 2 oldest Chinese goose hens are already starting nests! And giving me a big stink eye when I open the nest door to peek in.
They usually don't start to lay til January so I am a little surprised. As soon as my Gee, the oldest gander hears his girls scolding he storms in, all insulted and hopping mad!
I have started giving them romaine lettuce when I look in there, hoping I can trick the girls and grab the eggs til its warmer.
Bet that's not going to work tho.
