Well here's a sample of the silkies I just hatched. I hatched some interesting colors and can't wait to see how they age!
This is probably my favorite!

My second favorite. Love the colors and eyeliner! Wish it had better leg feathering.

I think your first three are blue or silver partridge or porcelain.

I'm sitting at at an Urgent Care Center with my daughter Lauren. She finally made it back from Chicago, but is real sick with fever and respiratory problems. After hours of rain, it just started snowing as we left. I'm glad to read posts while waiting! I'll respond about Jersey this evening. Thanks for the responses!

Armorfirelady here on byc shared how she got a wreath storage container on clearance to make a winter dustbin. I already use a shallow storage bin but decided to pick up one of the wreath storage bins too and I'm really glad I did! You can use both sides of it so it's like getting 2 for the price of one... I put it out today and only used 1/2 but ended up getting out both sides. I put it under the sun canopy and will take it back inside in about half hour so it doesn't get full of snow. Nice thin about it is that you can just dump it all in one side and put the lid on and store it until the next time! I would have put both sides out sooner but didn't have enough peat moss for both sides really, as my bag was getting low. I use a mixture of peat moss and wood ash. For mite/lice prevention. The 3 top girls got in right away. There was a waiting line. A fourth tried to join them. Didn't last long however...they chased her out pretty much right away. Mister stands guard. Finally got out the other half. Wish I'd had more peat moss. I'll be getting a couple more bags for the shelf soon.

Portable to move around to different pens and easy to store too! (I should be a salesperson.)
Thats a great idea! looks like they are enjoyign it too.
I read that you use peat moss and wood ash in your dust bath containers. Somewhere else I read the dust baths should have equal parts of wood ash, DE, children's play sand and dirt (like what's in your back yard). What is the best thing to use???? I ran out of sand and my wood ash was still too hot t mix in so my girls got DE and dirt. Is that a problem?

CCCCCCCCHICKENS told me about this thread, I'm glad to chat and share with people from my home state. I live in terre haute In. I have 21 hens of different breeds. and am looking to expand. I want to add EE's about 15 and 5 or 6 blue Ameraucana's and 5 or 6 Wheaten Ameraucana's and some Olive EE's too. got a question... is there other colors in the Ameraucana's? I've been researching and those are the only tow I have run into so far. and I just found out BR's lay a pink tinted egg so I might get a few of those too. I also have 3 Horses and 5 Goats and 6 dogs including 2 LGD's that are in love with the Goats...lol My grandmom has had chickens all her life the most I can remember her having at 1 time is 100, they all were her kids. I started my own flock last year when I was at an auction and this guy was going to kill to EE's ( didn't know what they were at the time ) right there!!!!! cause they were older hens and no one bid on them. so I gave him 5.00 bucks each and got them home and they lived in the garage till DH built me a coop. That started a fever I still have not kicked... lol
Welcome to the thread! Ameraucana colors recognized by the APA are blue, black, blue wheaten, brown red, buff, silver, wheaten and white. The color lavender isn't recognized along with a few other colors.

For Northern IN...

expecting upwards of a foot of snow EVERYWHERE over the next 36 hours

A WIND CHILL WARNING is also in effect Monday 1 a.m. to Tuesday 8 p.m. EST for the entire area. Wind chills may surpass -40°, which poses an extreme threat for frostbite and hypothermia.

I'm having trouble keeping up with shoveling the dog kennel run. How is everyone else doing?

I really hope she gets better. Today is a rough day to be out. Not as bad as that Sunday in 1978, but I was not there to see that day.

I PERSONALLY don't use DE in my dustbaths or in my chicken coop or around the chickens. Inhaling it can cause respiratory problems so I avoid it in that context.

When I use wood ash I also use it judiciously in a small percentage of the mix. It's my personal belief that too much of it will also cause respiratory problems.

The only place I use DE is in my grain bags/bins to help keep weevils from hatching in the feed.

Again, just my conclusions and practices based on some research.

And if you're going to use wood ash, be sure it's NOT FROM TREATED LUMBER.

OH...and I used to mix in sand too, but found that in the winter the sand was freezing solid. I have a bag of sand laying around here but just haven't used it this winter. I finally drug it downstairs in the basement so it wouldn't freeze! May mix some in now and then but it makes the mix kind-of heavy.
