I have a random question for anyone...... I have an add up on Hoosier Topics to sell my eggs, yesterday I get an e-mail from a person that says they have a farmers market and wants to buy my eggs for the market. I was wondering if anyone knows if I would get into any kind of trouble since the eggs he would be selling to the public as a retailer with a lic. are coming from me without a lic. I want to do it. It solves my extra egg problem but I don't want any trouble.
Anyone know???

Hey all. I live in Orleans, Ind. My ex and I had a hatchery for about 3 yrs. Im out of the business now but still have a variety of birds. I'm looking for a pair of Nankins. I had a set two years ago and would like to get another pair. Anyone know of a breeder?

I know a lady who raise and shows Nankins. I don't know if she sells any. If you want, pm me your contact info. I'll get that to her and if she has anything for sale, she can contact you.

Good question! I was thinking about selling eggs and noodles at the farmers market this year but know there is red tape to go through. Hopefully someone will know the answer.

Hello everyone!!!! Long time no see. I have around 100 pages to read so probably won't get to all of them.

Happy New Year to all and hope that everyone survived the weird weather of last weekend.

Update on my girls.

Petrie is doing great. Thank you everyone for your input. She spent two nights inside and then was put back outside as there didn't seem to be anything really wrong physically, although I think she could easily become a house chicken as she even learned how to eat Cheerios off of a spoon and the dogs and I all enjoyed her little chicken chatter! She even talks in her sleep. Even with only two days gone the others weren't sure if they wanted her to be their friend any more but they are just a big happy group again now. I have yet to get four eggs again but she is back to her old self and the gang is all together.

The weather caused some boredom and Petrie, Gertrude and Nuggett decided that Esthers comb looked tasty so she was a bloody mess one morning but I got it cleaned up and now she is fine too.

To battle the windchill I put out a heat lamp (clear not red) at one end and covered the entire pen with tarps (it has a solid roof and is about 6 1/2' by 9' and has plenty of ventilation as the roofing is that wavy corrugated stuff). Only minimal frostbite on one comb but I have a question for everyone. I happened to have used blue tarps to cover two sides of the pen and grey has been on the other two walls (west and north) since November, but do you all think if I had used clear plastic that the boredom could have been staved off? It would have made it brighter and maybe they wouldn't have gone postal on poor Esther?

Well I am off to see how many of these posts I can get through today. Hope everyone is happy well and warm and that all birds are safe and happy. Hello to all the new folks and just know you have come to the right place with all the crazy chicken people!!!

Just came in from the barn -- no hat, only 1 layer of gloves & unzipped coat -- feels like spring!! The ducks were super noisy as if they knew it was warm enough to go outside again. They've been having fun waddling around in the snow. I just hope they don't sink into the large drifts in their run & get stuck! The dogs are having a great time playing & lounging in the fresh air & snow. The alpacas went out for a bit and then decided to come back in & eat hay (they never turn down an opportunity to eat!) I didn't even bother trying to open the chicken door because I'd have to push it against a 2 foot drift to open it & I'm not sure I even could. Besides, they'd have to walk in drifts taller than themselves. Maybe tomorrow after some of the snow melts & it's wet & muddy.... Now that it's thawing we'll need to clean out the rabbit trays -- lots of frozen poo & spilled water in them. Everything is starting to have a damp feeling in the barn...but at least it's not frozen!!

Just a side note for those who like to sew -- I bought a Babylock Evolve serger on ebay & it's supposed to arrive this afternoon -- very excited -- I've been wanting one for years and finally took the plunge!!

When checking on the critters this morning I heard peeping noises coming from under my broody! Looks like the cold weather did not hurt the eggs. -12 with a wind chill of -25 at one point. My barn is not heated and not insulated. It is just a very good wind break. Chickens are much tougher than people give them credit for. Here is to hoping I come home to little fluff balls tonight! So happy!

We burn with wood so I can certainly do that!!! I sprayed them with Adams flea spray but I like the ash idea better. Maybe I can make a dusting place for them. They haven't dusted in a week because of the weather. I am sure they would love it!!!

do you have any pictures of your turkey coops.  I'm getting 3 in the spring, order placed a while back.  I'm trying to image and design what I will need for a max of 3 turkeys.  I'm thinking they need the same stuff as chickens but more space, larger nests, more head space between roosting and venting. 

Yep, just enlarge the sizes. My BR adult pair have a 24x8 pen, and a 3x8 coop.
I made it a bit big since 2 hens will join soon also.
For a laying area, they like secluded and dark. Simple as a board leaned up against a wall.
Will try to get pics if things aren't crazy next few days. Turkeys are ground layers normally.

I'm excited to be getting these warmer temps. I hope it melts all the snow in the pens so I won't have to shovel them out. They are FULL of snow.

Totally agree, mine will be a muddy mess. glad I got all the hay last week!

Is there any hatchery/breeder you guys would recommend for when I get more chicks?

I used Mt Healthy (ohio) for my Australorps. My girls did go broody last fall, just 2. Very happy with them.
I have purchased from meyer, BBW turkey and my 4 african, 4 embden geese.
They do seem to stick to what hatches and sexing. I had -0- roos from mt healthy and ordered pullets.
Meyer was very good also, no losses from shipments. Geese are still young but should know within 2 months on gender.
Some will only offer straight run, meaning unsexed on certain species. I usually seem to get all hens
I really like how my geese look from Meyer. Large, friendly and quite impressive when all of them go into flight mode
If anyone visits just holler WEEWEEES!  if they are out free ranging its just a sight to see them all flapping and running to greet you

Mine run to greet me when I say " bitty bitty" guess it's all in th training. I'm trained pretty good!!! Lol

Tossed a few of my chickens into the covered run around noon. there is about 3 steps they need to walk in snow to get back in to the coop. so far all are still in the run. The ducks had already been in and out of the run trying to herd the chickens out too.

As for boredom, I found tossing an entire head of cabbage into the coop lasted almost a day. they did not care for it as much if I broke off the leaves but preferred to do it themselves. I think they actually liked pecking at it when it was slightly frozen better too.
