Ah, hmm, I guess I'll look into guineas then. We have a dog but I'm not so sure Pavlov would bother scaring them away. My dad put up some discs hoping the light would scare them off but they didn't last. Lol, I could always get my little sister to stand outside she screams enough to wake the dead.
Hmm maybe I could leave our window open and turn up the radio, I think I could find a loud male talking station. Thanks SallyinIndiana, your tips sound very helpful.

Okay, here are a few chick pictures. Momma was giving me a hard time so I had to get what I could.

Morning all. Lost a chicken to a predator yesterday, thinking a cat or maybe a skunk. I'd stepped outside in the afternoon and smelled one. It was a buff brahma Banty hen that would fly over the coup. Whatever it was only defeathered the neck and are that part. Then this morning I had a dead Millie hen in the nest. She was fine yesterday!! Chicken raising is a hard business!! Otherwise all made it thru the weather ok. I did notice tracks in the snow Friday Am after the new small snow. Interesting what's out whe we are not!!

Sorry about your hens. Predators are an issue for me since some heavily wooded areas are bordering my property.

Hello, its surprising how much snow is gone, from 1 foot to now none is some patches. All my chickens were out in the run though crowding around wanting to be let out.

I'm pumped for spring and I hope it gets here soon. I've got a big long list of things I've gotta do.

Does anybody else?

I'm pumped as well! Spring better come fast! I also have a long list of stuff to do.

Lol me too Rowdy, what are your plans? I've got to build.....3 mini coops to put Phoenix,Silkies and D'Uccles in, well the phoenix one will be big and I plan on building a bachelor pen. And I am going to steal a section of my dads garage to keep as a brooder so I can start experimental /mutt breeding.

Yep, I have a ton of stuff to get done too. Just waiting until it is a little nicer out and I have time. Want to get it all done before it hits 70. 70 is way too hot to do anything, but sit in the air conditioning lol

I am going to re-winterize the vents in the roof for next winter (this year a vent got clogged by snow) going to get a barred rock roo and try incubating. Move the pullets from the brooder pin to the coop, repair the brooder pin. Gotta move my compost pile an acre (lot more than you think). Build a bigger run for the winter, and rebuild a mini coop to introduce the pullets (my top order hen is somewhat mean to newcomers, and she'll peck at them). That is just my chicken list. I also have several other projects I am going to do as well. I have to build another shed, repair and install a new carb on my quad, work on the house, and cut down a tree that is dying. That's my list. I also have to do all of that while keeping the family happy. And work.

Cleaning out the worst part of the coop and filling with new pine chips today. Here's hoping that pulling out the ducks makes a big difference. Only one more month till the food and water move outside too. Half of the water containers are outside already but I left one inside since I have chickens that just want to sunbath in the greenhouse part of the coop.

This spring I am hoping to get a lavender orpington, a frizzle buff orpington, a blue laced red wyandotte, and maybe a few more from akers hatchery. They are all straight run except for black sex links. Hoping the drizzle buff orpington would be a roo so I could breed him with my regular buff.

Thanks to Brad I have a few BLRW. They are very pretty and not even fully grown yet. I might hear crowing around April 1st and think it is a joke .


We emptied out 4 heaping wheel barrels of semi frozen wet bedding from the coop and replaced it with 4 wheel barrels of tree trimming chips.
In a couple of days when the new chips settle we plan to add another 2 wheel barrels. But those we plan to mix in with the bedding under the roosting bars as it was not as nasty. Long term it will be April before the entire thing gets emptied, and new stuff put down. Once empty the entire coop will be spring cleaned and sprayed with Seven. Lots of other spring changes in store for the coop too but they need to wait until the threat of snow is over.
