The big snow and bigger freeze was tough on us.  The girls were fine, but DW fell at work and now requires surgery.  We're going this afternoon, so I'll catch up reading the posts while I'm in the waiting room. Wish us luck!

Btw, Cheryl, when I read your PM, I thought you said that on the coldest nights you had to go out and resuscitate your hens--

but I re-read and saw that you said resituate your hens!

A big thank you to SallyinIndiana for allowing me to visit and see your setup. You have a nice operation going. I know you were worried about the mess that the birds were making, but you shouldn't. You've got it under control. The birds all look healthy and happy, and the HRIRs are especially nice! I hope your breeding efforts with them are successful. We definitely need more of those big, beautiful birds around here.

She also allowed me to tag along on one of her orders, and I now have 6 new pullet chicks! 3 Barred Rocks and 3 Easter Eggers are now cheeping away in their brooder. I plan on adding at least one of each to my laying flock, and either selling the others or using them to trade with people for other varieties that catch my eye. I'm getting an aquarium brooder set up tonight, and once I've transferred them to that, I'll take some pictures to post on here.

I have one of the RIR pipping in the bater now the other 2 RIR eggs in there are slowly just calling for me to candle but it is lockdown. I need to find an incubator that can candle the eggs while in lockdown. Someone has to have one. If not maybe I can get Brad to repurpose me a wine cooler as an incubator hatcher with its own candler. After all he is getting some deep discounts at his lowes.

The babies are getting close to laying!!
And I discovered someone has decided the hay in the barn is a good place to lay! I should probably add some more nest boxes soon!!

I think one of my EEs is egg bound
she hasn't layed for a while but she's been in the nest boxes quite frequently. This morning I found a yolk with no shell in the box she was in when I closed up the coop last night. Today she's standing around all fluffed up and hasn't hardly left the coop. Anything I can do for her?

For those of you that hatch: is it worth it to try to build a bator or would I be better off just buying one when they go on sale this spring? Also what do you do with all your chicks? I'd like to try my hand at hatching but I'm not sure I have room to house a bunch!

I found a Rubbermaid box to use as a chick brooder, a heat lamp, chick feeder and waterer, and cedar shavings. Now I just have to wait till spring. Saw some jubilee orpington chicks online for $45 apiece. Really tempting!!!

I buy bators I use a still air for hatching the last 3 days and a digital 1588 for the first 18 -19 days. But I only got the digital one after hatching enough chicks in my still air bators to pay for the 1588. I sell chicks on CL. If I have enough of my own hatched I sell those, if not I wait for a hatchery special and sell those. Hatching is not always cheaper. Even using my own eggs things can go wrong, power outages, house temp changes rapidly, ... And to top it off I will only hatch straight run chicks but hatcheries sell by the gender for some breeds. Still sometimes shipped eggs are the only way to get the breed one desires. And shipped eggs hatch well sometimes and not at all other times.
If I was using shipped eggs, I would only use a tried and true incubator store bought or home made.

So I learned a hard lesson this morning. Some one suggested I place a heat lamp on my broody and her babies. I did not for many reasons. Chief among them my fear of fire in the barn. As a result I lost two of my four chicks. The other two are now in the house and appear to be doing just fine. The problem seems to be it was too cold for the chicks to move away from their momma and get food and water.

I feel horrible. In the future, if I let a broody hatch in this sort of weather, I will make sure to bring the babies inside after they have all hatched and dried. Please learn from my mistake friends.

HEY ALL I GOT A BRAIN TEASER FOR YA

I have a Buff Op hen I got last spring she was 1 of 17 or 18 that was said to come from a chicken factory. She had NO feathers and was really skinny. I got her fat and her feathers all came in perfect, but she is VERY MEAN. She is broody and has been for 3 mths. now she cant or wont stand up. I have looked her all over and can find no injuries. she is very thin AGAIN and I brought her in the house and put food right next to her. She eat it up but then she vomitted it up.4 times!!! didnt know chickens could even do that. Whats up anyone know?

Aww I'm sorry. I was afraid of that, so I brought momma in also. I have hatch next week, but now I have to figure out how long to keep them inside for. Probably no more winter broodies for me. Unless we get heat in our barn or something. I hope your other chicks make it alright.
