INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

DW out of surgery now. So far, the total shoulder replacement was a success. Wait until the pain meds wear off and we'll see what she says then.
Thanks to all for the well wishes and good vibes!
Yikes! A total shoulder replacement! Glad the surgery was a success! I hope her recovery is as smooth and pain-free as possible. And don't worry about your chicken prayer flags. I can hang onto them as long as needed. Although you might want to hang them across your DW's room to cheer her up! Lol!

So I just caught up on 2275 posts! My chicken hibernation is hopefully over. My EE, "the survivor" has survived through the neg 0 temps and is being such a trooper as the only feathered friend I have right now. She has not cozied p to the pups at all.

SO, to catch up on the last month and a half...

I am sorry to hear about those who have lost feathered and human family members. Either way it's not easy, but we are such a caring group, lot's of therapy here!

M2H and CRSelvey - you asked awhile back how long my EE was gone after the massacre...it was a little over a week. She would show herself a little at a time. Now she is even letting me pick her up and snuggle. I'll grab her and hold her tight to put some extra warmth on her once in awhile. I can see it in her eyes that she appreciates it. She has remained very healthy - I just sent samples in of one of her eggs and some dirt/soil from various places around the yard.

I AM FREE AND CLEAR!! More chickens for me!! (I had to put all my chickens and turkeys down due to a communicable disease last fall).

Einstein, my tough bird, checking out this white stuff.

My Aussie pup, Roxy, is not 4 months old and ROTTEN!

I think I'll be getting some chicks in the spring, but is there anyone that has pullets that they are needing to re-home? I'm wanting plain ole backyard birds, no show birds or anything. Not wanting to pay a bunch, but willing to pay what they're worth. I am just itching to have some girls following me around! And eggs, how I miss my own eggs!!

I would be willing to drive within 2 hours of Dubois county, so like say Bloomington area down to the Kentucky line. PM me if you have anything!

Good to see other than some bumps and bruises and COLD weather, everybody is doing relatively okay!

What great new! I am so happy for you! What a relief knowing you are clean. You have one lucky surviving chickens and cute little puppy

Keeping my expectations pretty low, just in case the boys don't stay interested. I'm pretty sure my little girl will, and besides, they'll all end up "my" birds, right? Isn't that pretty much how it goes? lol Thanks, I am dying to get them here! I dreamed of them last night. :yiipchick I've been thinking of flu shots lately, too. This seals it. So sorry for your loss. We have a foxhound and a JRT. My JRT has the temperament of a mix (she may be one). I think as long as I don't let the dogs out together while I train them, it'll be better. And hopefully having them around the chicks will be a great start to the relationship. But I feel like I need some kind of run, regardless, because we live in the woods. Who knows what's out there! Certainly raccoons, but I'm sure there are other critters.
We live in the woods too and have a fully enclosed run on the coop. When I know I will be home most of the day I will open the run door to let them into a fully fenced garden too. That's not to say I think my being home will keep them safer but it allows me to lock up behind them when they go to bed. This coming spring we will be adding on to the run so that I can have more space that they can safely roam. I have found it nice when we are out if town to not have to ask neighbors to mind them a lot because I know the run is very secure with 1/2" hardware cloth on top, sides, and burried 24" around. It was also easier to wrap with the plastic sheeting so that they had snow free areas when the rest if us didn't

. It's not hard to build a small tractor if you want to do that as well. It's all a work in progress around here.
I want chicks badly! How am I gonna hold off till spring lol
Man are you in the wrong place if you are trying to hold off in anything chicken related. There's just a great bunch of enablers in this group!!!

[/quot I am so happy that you are back, your hen is healthy and well, and that your property is safe when you decide to get more. And that puppy is just a doll!!! Love her. I'm not sure if you all remember but a few months ago I posted a video of my AS pullet who was acting like she was drunk and unable to stand much. Well it took about a month of her being separated from the group before she seemed well enough to go back. Her reintegration seems to be taking as long as her recovery but that's another story. One of her cockerel siblings is now acting the same way. He's been separated from the flock for about two weeks and doesn't seem any better or worse. I check on him all the time (he's in my mudroom) and he's just off balance. During our power outage I thought I might lose home but he's still with us. I've read the whole chicken health for dummies and it doesn't give me any insight on this issue. Could it be something with the breed? He eats and drinks just fine with no signs of injury but his balance is horrible and he spends most of his time sitting (as did she). Oops. I pressed submit instead of return. Sorry. Anyway, if you have any insight I'd appreciate it. I just don't understand why another one is sick when I care for them all so carefully. And on another topic I went to get the organic grower I've been feeding the whole bunch today and they told me that the layer they have is safe even for the Roos and I still need to supply oyster. I've read that layer isn't great for them and I have three girls that are over 7 mo old but don't lay yet. What is your opinion on feeding the layer? They also carry a soy free organic layer blend. Does anyone know what the benefit if being soy free is? Thanks!!

Haha It won't take long once your DH sees those chicks and starts staring at "Chicken TV" He will be smitten. I didn't know BR and EE came in bantam size. I have one of each in LF and they both lay the largest and nicest eggs-- and my EE's is the prettiest of course. Silkies have grown on me since I've been on this thread (around a year now). I am hoping to get a couple of them in the future. I will get your avatar to you tomorrow. :)
Your EE lays large eggs? Is that the typical size for an EE? I got 2 EE this past spring and my eggs have only weighed in as mediums. And I've only had 1 blue/green egg at a time. Either one of the girls has never laid or her eggs are a different color. With all the different breeds we have I'm never sure which lays which color. The only ones I know for sure are the Isa Browns & Cinnamon Queens. I get a lot of lighter tinted eggs with variations of pinkish, peachy-ish, beige colors. This is a sample of the different colors we get...
That looks like one of my egg cartons! Lol.

Do silkies come in bantam and regular (large) size??

Seems like some places generically refere to silkies as "bantams" and some do not. I just wondered if they came in both sizes?

They are all bantam. I've heard there are standard size in Europe, but I have never seen any pictures of standard silkie.

Thanks Kab!

I was thinking from what I've read that they were all bantams, but since I've not raised them I wanted to know from someone who has.

Which brings me to my next question...........Do you, now or ever, have chicks or hatching eggs to sell? I'd like to add maybe 3-4 silkies to my little farm sometime soon. Your birds always looks good in your pics so thought I'd ask.

I bought an incubator but haven't set it up yet, hoping to get into a little hatching soon.

I can send eggs to you to hatch. My silkies a very fluffy, but until I get my breeding pens set up, they are pet quality due to the mixed colors. I may have some juveniles for sale closer to spring, just depending on what hatches under Snow on Sunday. It's easier to send eggs. I don't have pay pal set up yet, so I just take checks in the mail. I send a dozen at a time, just to ensure a decent hatch, so if or when you decide you want some, pm me your address and I will start gathering eggs to send. I can discuss price through messaging. :)
