Well said both of you! When I first joined, I was trying to learn about the different breeds.
(What, not all chickens are white or red?!?) So away I went to some of the breeds threads.
Realized I needed to learn a different way. I have no tolerance for rude!

I lurk on many breed threads. I occasionally speak up, not much. I have to admit I have learned a lot from the ameraucana thread.

Okay, then! Two nesting boxes it is!

I saw a pin where someone just used wicker baskets and that looked pretty cozy.

I have 4, when laying is at peak they rarely use the 4th closest to the man door.
Usually its just 2 farthest boxes.

ok well I went out to feed and I fed everybody else BEFORE the girls... just didn't want to go in there. Didn't want to find another dead hen!! So after all were fed I could put it off no more away I went... YEA!!!!! everyone is alive and kicking... AND LETTING ME KNOW I WAS LATE!!!!!

AND I got 6 eggs, 2, 6's in a row maybe my girls are picking up steam again???? and the broody in the house is the same she is eating but only if I remove her from her nesting area all together. Will be putting Chicks under her Sunday night,

hope it works. Already have an ideal how to give them room to roam around and still stay safe in the house.

The bottom girl is a Swedish Flower Hen. She is Emma. Or Queen Emma depending on which part of the flock she's with.

There are different shades of blue, light blue, dark blue, medium blue with lacing. blues that have darker heads and neck,and so on, just like there are different shades of each race. I might be really pale compared to another person of the same race, but we are both still white. Then there is black and am sure you know what that looks like, some have a greenish blue sheen to them and then there is splash which is like white with black and blue speckles. All of these are breed together to get more blue, black, and splash offspring. Different pairings have different outcomes, if you would like to know the outcomes I could post them. Maybe you thought it was blue, black and, splash, because if came from BBS parents?

English Blue Orp example

That's a good point about varied shades! I actually think that I got the idea that a hen like this Blue Orp example was a splash and not a blue was from looking (for fun) at hatching eggs on eBay. And that makes sense from what PipD says below. They'd show a Blue Orp, but call the eggs Blue/Black Splash. I assumed because the head (like the Blue hen's above) looks more blackish, that's why it would be a Splash. Like a literal splash of black. Now I get it!

Pipd posted: They call the hatching eggs and offspring from birds like that Blue/Black/Splash because blue does not breed true and so you can't be guaranteed the color of the offspring. Blue x Blue produces an assortment of blue, black, and splash chicks--50% blue, 25% black, and 25% splash to be exact.

Oh yippee! Just heard this evening that in about 10 days we could be in for another round of frigid temps. Our local forecaster is currently projecting "Siberian Air' for the 26th - 30th. Not sure where the temps will bottom out on this round. Our animals made it through 2 days of subzero, but I wonder how they'll do for 5 days if it gets anywhere close to the cold we had before...

Any helpful tips on a lonely chick? I have one OEGB thats hatched early, and has been in the bator for 2 days.
I pulled her out and added water. She is eating, drinking like she is starved and NOT happy about being alone!
I have quail due in 2 days, hope they are early. We are taking turns comforting her. What a bouncing little baby!
I set the other 2 OEGB eggs with her, but at lock down they didn't look promising.
Ugh I may need to find some chicks!

I am worried too. I will have to bring my scovies in, they are really miserable if it gets to zero.

I can't put them in the grow out coop, It has a painted wood floor. Back to the porch

Does any one else have muscovy? What have you done in the past for them in severe cold?
