INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

About the Snowy Owl at the Evansville Airport (I mentioned it in an earlier post, not because I was particularly worried about it finding my chickens, but because it was a follow-up to a previous discussion about Snowy Owl sightings in Indiana-- and I just thought it was interesting.

Synopsis of news article: The USDA wildlife biologist working at the Evansville airport reported that the snowy owl had been there since Dec. 17th. When air traffic controllers would notify the biologist of approaching aircraft, he would chase the owl from the property with his truck. Soon the owl became used to the truck and would flee as soon as he saw it. The owl was caught and relocated yesterday to an undisclosed location where there are plenty of voles, mice, rabbit, ducks, and geese. The bird was reported to be in good health. The biologist said, "In fact when I was ready to release it, the bird perched calmly on my arm checking out the landscape. I finally had to give it a bit of a launch so it would take off."

Here's the end of the article:
I have been following it too. They are really interesting birds, None seen here yet that I have heard.

The fabric is doubled flannel that was left over from a kilt I made dh one year. I pulled it tight around the dishpan, marked it, stitched it, then cut holes for her feet. It doesn't go all the way to the back so the shavings in the bottom of the dishpan are catching the poo. She can just hang around resting her hip/leg as needed. I just checked her and she's still in the same position. I will taker her out tonight or in the morning to test the leg. She's enjoying the food delivery service I think.
CRSelvey ~ I am impressed! I clicked on the photo to see that your set up looks perfect. When I had read about slings when I thought about using one for Violet, the examples looked like this one: (not my chicken). I was afraid of doing more harm than good.

I just ran across this photo below. I'll probably be walking around like that all the time, just for fun! lol

DW is mending from shoulder replacement surgery on Monday. Neither of us has slept more than 4 hrs straight due to nursing duties.

I'm back doing all the chores that I stopped doing because 'my way' didn't suit her. Like laundry, loading the dishwasher, cleaning and cooking...
So far nobody's been starved or wearing filthy clothes.
Although-- if you ask DW she thinks I'm poisoning her. Microwaved scrambled eggs, tomato soup w grilled cheese, blue box Mac n cheez, and gravy bread all seem like perfectly acceptable meals to me. :)

Since it's going to be so cold that the chickens won't go outside, guess they'll get their fodder inside the coop next week. Our staggered crop is coming in well this winter.

My flock now is very small compared to earlier 2000 when I had as many as 67 birds. I am now down to less than a dozen :( and these are all fairly OLD. I have 2 beautiful frizzled roo's. I have a partridge silky hen, a New Hampshire hen, a blue Cochin, a very old white cochin hen, a white leghorn mixed hen and a couple others. I am getting a pair of white frizzled cochins and am hen sitting 2 buff orpington hens. The four I just mentioned are less than a year old. I also have a very sick little black frizzled hen who is currently a house hen. Her name is Friday's GirL and she has a cyst in her reproduction area that is growing and compromising her other organs. I will be lucky to have her for another month.

Since I have discovered other breeders on facebook I am looking into some frizzled polish mix and EE hens. We will see! I have a very large coop and have not decided if I wish to keep it as such or to turn it into a summer/kitchen/cottage type building. I've owned chickens for 34 yrs. My chickens are strictly pets. I've always kept all that has naturally been breed from my backyard. So yeah sometimes I've had a few too many roosters, but we have just divided the flock. Many years I did free range. Now too many Cooper Hawks in the area and an occasional stray possum. I live in a small addition on less than an acre of land out in the country of Huntertown, IN. Huntertown is about 10 miles north of Fort Wayne, IN.

I would love to meet new people who share my same interest in Feathers.

Welcome to the Indiana Thread HeaVenSFeaTheRs!! Please look on page 1895 post 18943 about Indiana Thread information.
I have six pet chickens and I'm hoping to get two female LF Cochins in March. One lavender and one blue, with one of them a frizzle. Not sure if that's possible, but hopefully bradselig can find eggs to hatch for me or something. I'm sorry to hear about your black frizzle hen's cyst. A week and a half ago, I had my favorite hen, a Black Jersey Giant put to sleep at the vet because she had ovarian cancer and a large tumor and also smaller ones.
Anyway, we're glad you joined us! You sound like you have lots of experiences to share.

$3 a bag for 100 ties. I didn't think that was too bad.
bradselig- I thought that was a hula skirt at first! And I'm not even in kabhyper's condition!

Fantastic to her she is doing well. First week after any surgery is really hard.
Please let her know she is in my thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery.
Awww, but she knows you are making sure things are done.
I am kinda partial to the tomato soup n grilled cheese dipped in it!
Fodder is looking great! Your chickens are grateful too I bet! I did get motivated and finally set up my first round.

pginsber ~ DW sounds pretty lucky! But, considering she's had surgery and you're both sleep-deprived, I'm sure both of you aren't feeling very cheery. Hope you both will have a speedy recovery!

Btw, your fodder looks cheerful-- Spring Green!!
ya that would be me too. But hard telling what may be in the sling for the day

Haha! Didn't think of that!
goodb ~ Yes, all of us on the Indiana Thread think you are perfectly normal to hatch your own chicks. Don't think twice about it.

I think Leah's Mom asked SallyinIndiana about LED rope lighting-- LED lights don't get hot, so I believe Sally uses them for light.
chick rookie ~ What chicks did you get from ChickCrazed (formally known as FarkerFarms)? I can't remember what you were getting.
