INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

not if CRSelvey's DH wears a kilt! Unless leslea's DH is a Scotsman.

disclaimer: The above post is meant to be humorous and not to offend anyone.
LOL!

Yes, crunchy means hippie, for sure. Crunchy like granola.

Hubby is a hot-blooded Italian/stubborn German mix! You'll have to get your kilt-wearin' from me (I'm a Cunningham!).

Who am I kidding, we're all mutts around here. Only the dogs and the chickens (we hope) will be some recognizable breed!

About the Snowy Owl at the Evansville Airport (I mentioned it in an earlier post, not because I was particularly worried about it finding my chickens, but because it was a follow-up to a previous discussion about Snowy Owl sightings in Indiana-- and I just thought it was interesting.

Synopsis of news article: The USDA wildlife biologist working at the Evansville airport reported that the snowy owl had been there since Dec. 17th. When air traffic controllers would notify the biologist of approaching aircraft, he would chase the owl from the property with his truck. Soon the owl became used to the truck and would flee as soon as he saw it. The owl was caught and relocated yesterday to an undisclosed location where there are plenty of voles, mice, rabbit, ducks, and geese. The bird was reported to be in good health. The biologist said, "In fact when I was ready to release it, the bird perched calmly on my arm checking out the landscape. I finally had to give it a bit of a launch so it would take off."

Here's the end of the article:
Yes, some of the bigger airports and shooting them instead of trap & release. I've already signed 3 petitions this year. Naturalists are willing to do the work, why not let them?

If anyone is interested in seeing one, there's a map on ebird.org that gets updated for verified sightings. Then there are "unverified" sighting on the FB group Indiana Birding. I say "unverified" because even though they have pics, they won't all show up on ebird's map.

We were all set to go to Greensburg today to see a Snowy, but she's already changed hunting grounds. If you're in Northern Indiana, though, there are several birds regularly spotted at smaller airports, the lake, and a prison!

We a lot of hawks around here. We also have quite a few eagles my mom saw a juvenile one this morning. Thank God none have tried to get my chickens!

I had quit worrying about hawks for the winter. Then, yesterday I heard the unmistakable scream from a hawk, looked up and saw 3 (count 'em, 3!) red-tails flying overhead. One was pretty low, and I told the girls to hide.

Ha ha, I just told hubby we were going to get a Barnvelder "for our next chicken."

"Let's get through these first six, first!!!"

Y'all have a good Sunday. I hope to see some baby chick pics later!

And welcome to the other newcomers. I just love the ladies and gents on this board. So smart and welcoming.

hehehe you have chicken math! It is incurable, temporary relief can be obtained by holding a baby chick
wink.png

Several of us are incubating, hatching and setting right now. winter costs are kept down, chicks are cheaper to feed.
It depends on the breed. BO's are known to be less aggressive. You can also correct inappropriate behavior in a bird.

Ha! "temporary relief can be obtained by holding a baby chick" will only add to the fire of chicken madness.

DW is mending from shoulder replacement surgery on Monday. Neither of us has slept more than 4 hrs straight due to nursing duties.

I'm back doing all the chores that I stopped doing because 'my way' didn't suit her. Like laundry, loading the dishwasher, cleaning and cooking...
So far nobody's been starved or wearing filthy clothes.
Although-- if you ask DW she thinks I'm poisoning her. Microwaved scrambled eggs, tomato soup w grilled cheese, blue box Mac n cheez, and gravy bread all seem like perfectly acceptable meals to me.

Wow, I haven't thought of gravy bread for a long time. Maybe I'll make some for the kids tonight, and tell them it is a very special, once every decade, treat!

Sounds like you are feasting, lol.

Morning update from the nursery....
We still just have the 4 babies. There are two more eggs to go yet. The babies are all yellow with some brown, so I am guessing they will be white. Blue dad white moms, all white babies. Go figure. Two of them don't have their land legs yet and look like little bumble bees flapping around. Hopefully they will get the idea today or tomorrow.
Will update later in the day.

On another note, Blueberry the big cochin roo (or Burble Butt as I like to call him) is trying to figure out the ways of the rooster finally I think. He challenged Gus this morning when Gus mounted BB's favorite EE hen. No fight, since he reconsidered his actions pretty quickly. HInd sight 20/20 and all. He ran away as quickly as he jumped on Gus. Here is hoping he will start making blue cochin babies for us soon! Just have to get Lavender to cut the cord on her giant babies. Cricket is as big as his dad (Gus) at just under 4 months. He is going to be huge. At least the kids aren't trying to get under Lavender anymore. That would be funny to see though.
Just a forewarning. Sometimes cochins have fertility problems since they have so much fluff.

pginsber ~ DW sounds pretty lucky! But, considering she's had surgery and you're both sleep-deprived, I'm sure both of you aren't feeling very cheery. Hope you both will have a speedy recovery!

Btw, your fodder looks cheerful-- Spring Green!!
yuckyuck.gif
Haha! Didn't think of that!
goodb ~ Yes, all of us on the Indiana Thread think you are perfectly normal to hatch your own chicks. Don't think twice about it.

I think Leah's Mom asked SallyinIndiana about LED rope lighting-- LED lights don't get hot, so I believe Sally uses them for light.
chick rookie ~ What chicks did you get from ChickCrazed (formally known as FarkerFarms)? I can't remember what you were getting.
the chicks were 2 of the silkies she got from brad and I got some of her chickens to am fixing to post them in a min. I dont want to add to this one .... its too big now.... lol
