INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Again - I'm just guessing on the gleet but... Not unlike humans, if you may have used an antibiotic recently it can cause a "yeast infection". I don't remember if you've used one or not. Here is a post about vent gleet to give you an idea of some of the causes, prevention, etc. Sour crop is almost always a yeast infection as well.
Thank you for all the info. I haven't given her any antibiotics but I could give her some probiotics to help. She does have a smell and it's really pasty but I don't know the difference between the white stuff she normally has on poo and discharge. She's not her normal self, that's for sure. I'll have to check out sour crop.
When my niece and her husband who live in Seattle were married, all the men wore kilts since her husband's family's heritage is Scottish. Plus, those young Seattle types are a little crunchy and unconventional anyway. I remember being Jr. High age in the late sixties when kilts were popular (mini-skirt kilts). I looked online and found these examples. The one on the left is from 1967 and one on the right is from 1969. Notice how they're getting shorter. Haha
That pattern looks very much like what I made but I didn't use a pattern. It might have been easier if I had. It's funny to hear you all thanking about crunchy. Being from California, we call hippies granola people (I was raised one). We use the term crunchy to describe someone who is feeling a little cranky, who's skin is on crooked, or who's aura is the wrong color today .

Yes, I've heard you have to trim their butt fluff if you are going for fertility :)

I received my cheepers from Brad on Friday. After realizing my camera phone was broken, it turned out to be operator error so I am finally able to share some pics of them!

Here is my home made brooder with eco-glow heater

And here are a couple shots of the little guys

Hopefully I can get some better shots when I take them out to clean. They are Birchen Marans. So far I'm thinking it is 1 girl, 2 boys because one is feathering out much faster and the other two seem to have a bit more comb. I'm happy as long as there is 1 girl in there! I'll probably keep a girl and a boy and re-home the other boy in a few weeks (once I am more certain of genders). I also heard back from Akers Hatchery (who I called looking for a couple more chicks to keep these guys company). They are going to start hatching in Feb. I'll probably get a couple Lavender Orps and a Frizzle from them once these guys move to bigger quarters :) As long as these three don't talk me out of ever having chicks in the house again. So far it hasn't been bad except I had to bump my heat up way past where I am comfortable. I can't wait until I can turn it down again. It is downright tropical in here.
ok stupid question alert!!!! why do you have a stick in your brooder? do you have feed in the bottom on the floor?

CRSelvey ~ Since she's your special sweet girl, you might want to take her to the vet tomorrow to see what's going on. After this post, I'll stop posting possibilities because I don't want to overwhelm you when I am no expert.

The Poultry Podiatry site has added more info-- the page goes on and on. Poultry Podiatry - PoultryPedia - Google Sites

Here's some fungal info: Fungal Infections
Maybe Aspergillosis?

Excerpts from sling article:
Chick or Bird Sling (or Chair)

* KEEP IN MIND: You need to daily gently scratch potentially itchy spots that the Sling prevents the bird from reaching with its feet or beak. If you don't, the bird will be pretty miserable and can develop terribly itchy, swollen welts from lack of normal skin stimulation.
 • Check chicken periodically for "bedsores." Reposition the chicken slightly every so often and also possibly dust lightly with cornstarch to help prevent discomfort & chafing.

The stick is just to give them something to climb on - they really like it. All three of them were lined up on it today. I used pelleted bedding on the bottom - it is pine compressed into pellets and it breaks apart when it gets wet. I thought it might be less messy than regular bedding. Jury is still out on that since it does break apart into really fine pieces.

I have posted this else where but it takes so long to get answers sometimes, but here the questions get answered pretty fast so I'll ask it here as well.
What is Mareks? I tried to read up on it but cant find anything that speaks to a high school grad. you need 6 years of collage to understand what they are saying!!! the only thing I got were the signs. and that it is contagious. is it contagious to just birds or can my goats dogs and horses get it to? my chickens free range so they are around all my other critters.
